France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98+)

Then came the 2009 Bonnes-Mares. What a wine! While the Musigny showed more of a red fruit profile, the Bonnes-Mares was quite a bit darker. It also had a lot more underlying structure. With time in the glass, hints of menthol, tar and dried roses added complexity. Both wines took us on a journey. Ultimately, though, the Musigny gave up its charms easier, while the Bonnes-Mares continued to open up over several hours, seemingly with something new to say with each taste. It was flat-out monumental. The stuff dreams are made of.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru puts in a very impressive performance alongside the 2010. With plush red fruit, red cherries intermingling with wild strawberries, this is one of Roumier's most generous Les Cras whilst it retains disarming transparency and precision. The palate is beautifully balanced with crushed stone infusing the red fruit, hints of blood orange and spices. The pixelated finish leaves you just wanting more. This might get even better with continued bottle age. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar.

The 2009 Echézeaux wraps around the palate with layers of bright red fruit. This is a beautiful, vibrant 2009 with plenty of upper register notes and energy. Mint, sweet spices and raspberries wrap around the finish. The ripeness of the year comes through but that element is nicely balanced by the wine's focus and energy. My sense is that the 2009 will be even better once it drops some baby fat.

Dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice are some of the many notes that are woven together in the 2009 Grands- Echézeaux. I very much like the depth and intensity of the fruit. Today the 2009 appears to be holding much of its ultimate potential in reserve. Ideally the wine needs a few more years to flesh out. Revel in the distinguished elegance of Herve Jestin Extra Brut 2009. A much-lauded creation from master vintner, Herve Jestin, this exceptional vintage originates from the esteemed vineyards of Champagne, France. Our discerning aficionados will appreciate the meticulous production - only the handpicked finest pinot noir and a touch of chardonnay grapes make the cut, undergoing traditional fermentation in oak casks.

The inventor, Mr. Jestin, is globally renowned for his biodynamic philosophy, with this vintage being no exception. It develops its character during a prolonged ageing period on yeast lees, resulting in an exquisite complexity behind the seeming simplicity. Herve Jestin Extra Brut 2009 is an epitome of excellence; its sophisticated notes of ripe fruits and subtle hints of brioche perfectly complement the finesse of its fine, persistent bead.

Relish in this rare delight – Herve Jestin Extra Brut 2009 is truly a testament to the elite artistry of biodynamic oenology.

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyeres) shows gorgeous density and depth in a round, engaging style. This is a highly engaging, textured wine but it is also remarkably open for a grand cru, even in 2009. I am not sure it will make old bones, but it should drink nicely for a handful of years. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90)

Bright straw color with delicate bubbles. Intensely perfumed bouquet displays pear skin, nectarine, honeysuckle and citrus zest. Precise and clean on the palate, offering lively citrus fruit flavors and a deeper note of peach pit, this sparkling wine is more an expression of the variety than the process. A floral quality echoes on the long, spicy finish. Given the quality of their fruit, it is understandable why Huet concentrates on this purer kind of sparkling wine rather than the more widespread Champagne method, which masks the flaws of most overcropped chenin blancs harvested by machine in Vouvray.

Luminous straw-green. Knockout nose of fresh and dried fruits, marzipan, honey, lychee and white flowers. Clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors of fruit salad and fresh citrus complicated by almond milk and floral nuances. Deceptively easy to drink but very dense and deep, showcasing lovely balance (7.2 g/L total acidity, 13.6% alcohol and 8 g/L r.s.) and nicely combining Mosel-like floral daintiness and Schonenbourg power. You’d never guess this was made in a hot year like 2009. Finishes very long and vibrant, with ripe acidity typical of this site. This is the third vintage of the Schoelhammer to be released and it is hands-down not just my favorite, but also by far the best, purest and most precise wine of the three. Delicious.

Still deep, dark, almost inky in color, the wine offers off the hook aromas of smoked truffle, cigar box, tobacco, black and dark red fruit with spice box, tobacco leaf and smoke filled nuances. Deep, rich, full-bodied and with this incredible blend of elegance, power and sensuality, this wine is going to age for decades. The wine was made from blending this 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc.

Vinous (94)

White plum, fresh apricot, hazelnut, honey and nutty oak on the nose, perked up by a whiff of pineapple. Sweet, deep and powerfully structured, with the wine's fresh fruit flavors currently held under wraps by surprising acidity. Not showing the personality of the Clos de la Mouchere, but this grand cru's sheer energy and very long, rising finish promise a slow and eventful evolution in bottle.

Vinous (92-95)

Deep ruby-red. Brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry, licorice and dusty spices. Wonderfully sweet and supple for young Clos Vougeot, with powerful black fruit flavors enlivened by violet. Quite racy and energetic in the middle for all its creaminess. Finishes with big, broad, fine-grained tannins and superb persistence. Boillot has owned these vines in Le Grand Maupertuis (planted in 1976 and 1952) since 2008.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2009 Volnay Les Fremiets shows the wilder side of Volnay in its distinct notes of game, cured meats and dark red fruit. It, too, comes across as young and full of life. This is far from an easygoing 2009 on many counts. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

Vinous (95-96)

Deep ruby. Seductive scents of ripe blackberry and boysenberry, singed plum and star anise, lifted by an intense floral topnote. Sweet, expansive dark fruit flavors show excellent concentration, with suggestions of licorice pastille and orange pith giving the wine an exotic character. Shows outstanding clarity and power on the extremely long finish, which is shaped by smooth, slow-building tannins.

Wine Advocate (90-93)

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyeres) shows gorgeous density and depth in a round, engaging style. This is a highly engaging, textured wine but it is also remarkably open for a grand cru, even in 2009. I am not sure it will make old bones, but it should drink nicely for a handful of years. The Charmes is made from partially purchased fruit that is used to augment the estate’s small holdings. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

Vinous (93-95)

(13.8% alcohol) Good full medium red. Very closed but deep nose hints at wild raspberry. Large-scaled, rich and sweet, with terrific creamy depths even if it's not yet expressing itself. Boasts the greatest volume of these 2009s but still rather unformed. Best today on the very long finish, where ripe tannins are smothered in fruit.

Vinous (94)

Delicious.
