France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous (98)Yet another stunner, the 1999 Chambertin halts all conversation around the table. Muscular, dense and explosive, the 1999 is a vertical, imposing Burgundy that is also clearly built for the long haul. Even with all of its full-throttle, unrestrained power, the 1999 possesses captivating inner sweetness that soars out of the glass with remarkable purity. What a wine! |

Burghound (97)The '99 Bèze just continues to get better and better with every passing year. A flat out gorgeously complex nose is comprised by spice, earth, minerality and still fresh red and black pinot fruit aromas. There is excellent richness to the intense and beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with plenty of mouth coating dry extract that confers a seductive texture onto the strikingly persistent finish. Like the '99 Chambertin, while this could be drunk now I would strongly advise holding it for at least another 5 years and 10 would probably be better. Tasted many times and this only seems to go from strength to strength. In a word, exquisite. Tasted twice in both 2016 and 2017 with multiple and consistent notes since release. |

Wine Advocate (90)The 1999 Clos de la Roche from Armand Rousseau went through an awkward youth, when it felt hard and rather disjointed. Now with 15 years on the clock, it is showing better than it used to. The nose is broody and taciturn at first, eventually revealing dusky, brambly red fruit with hints of cola and soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy core of red fruit and well-judged acidity. The tannins are much finer than I recall, having softened with time, and there is an appealing weightless intensity toward the finish. No, it is not one of the Charles Rousseau’s best 1999s, but it is finally beginning to show its class. Drink now-2020+. Tasted January 2014. |

Vinous (97)The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has long been one of my favourite vintages, not that I get to taste it that often. It has an almost extravagant bouquet that delivers plush Morello cherry, wild strawberry and light cassis aromas and with aeration, these ebb to reveal more tertiary notes and a touch of pencil shavings. The palate displays exquisite balance, this being 1999, more fuller and corpulent than other vintages. This particular bottle demonstrates more structure towards the finish than I expected, exerting stupendous grip to remind you that it might be almost 20 years old, but it has 20 or perhaps even 30 years ahead of it. Magnificent. Tasted blind at the New World/Old World tasting at La Trompette. |

Vinous (90+)Medium red. Red fruits and tobacco on the nose, with some funky hints of truffley evolution. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then classically dry but more harmonious in the middle palate than the nose suggests. Clamps down on the finish, showing a cool and slightly ungiving character and an edge of acidity. I expected a bit more expansiveness and sweetness but Cyrielle Rousseau noted that she and her father Eric find their 1999s rather ungiving so far. She told me that she opened this bottle about six hours before I tasted it and predicted that it would be better the next day. She also described this Mazy as a funny wine, like a clown. |

Vinous (91+)(fut E03) Saturated red-ruby. Noble, compelling, superripe aromas of black raspberry, meat, mocha, flowers, white pepper and bitter chocolate. A powerful, muscular style, with a saline impression of extract and tangy fruit and mineral flavors. Quite fine and restrained, but, as with Bizot other '99s, the combination of oaky torrefaction and Bizot's practice of vinifying with the stems has the effect at present of slightly drying the finish. But this is a highly promising set of '99s. |

Wine Advocate (100)This is one of the greatest dry white wines I have ever tasted. The 1999 Ermitage l'Ermite is a liquid mineral, crystalline expression. It is the essence of its grape as well as terroir. It may be the greatest expression of terroir I have seen outside of a handful of Alsatian Rieslings (Clos Ste. Hune comes to mind). It has that transparent character that terroiristes talk more about than actually recognize. Drinking it is like consuming a liquified stony concoction mixed with white flowers, licorice, and honeyed fruits. It is frightfully pure, dense, and well-delineated. As I said last year, There is no real fruit character, just glycerin, alcohol, and liquid stones. That's about it, but, wow, what an expression! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. This is for the connoisseur of rare wines. Along with Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Chapoutier is producing the finest expressions of white Hermitage. His single vineyard cuvees are to die for if you like these eccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites. |

Vinous (90+)Bright, full ruby. Captivating aromas of cassis, game, mocha and brown spices. Sweet, concentrated and chewy, with powerful cassis and kirsch fruit flavors. Already displays wonderful inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with rather strong, slightly tough tannins that will require patience. This is quite impressive, but the 2000 version appears to have sweeter tannins. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90)Good medium ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, game and leather. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely vinosity to frame the expressive flavors of roasted plum, currant, black cherry, minerals and dark chocolate. Firmly structured but quite suave, with fine tannins and very good length. Impressive for the vintage. |

Wine Advocate (79)This herbaceous, light to medium-bodied wine is cleanly made but has no substance or depth. In addition, the finish is attenuated. It is a disappointment. Drink it over the first decade of life. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90)Good bright red-ruby. Dark aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice, violet, mint and bitter chocolate, along with a faint note of candied berries. Tightly wound and quite juicy, with a strong mineral spine giving it a rather linear, lean impression. But classy and not at all hard, with lovely underlying fruit. Finishes firmly tannic and fresh. Not fat, but subtle and stylish. |
