France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Burghound (94)Here there is slightly more wood in evidence but also noticeably more aromatic complexity to the exceptionally spicy nose of ripe plum, earth and slightly animale scents. This is really quite refined for the appellation as the mid-palate is pure silk which disguises somewhat the underlying muscularity of the big-bodied flavors that are blessed with both excellent concentration as well as plenty of palate coating dry extract. This is a powerful but balanced effort that offers genuinely outstanding length and is unapologetically built to age. |

Vinous (98+)Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos de Beze. Pungent aromas of wild red berries, smoke, earth, iron and wild herbs. Almost shockingly silky in the mouth, but with crushed-stone minerality lending force to the blackberry, licorice and earth flavors. Incredibly sappy but edge-free wine with an explosive, endless finish that titillates the salivary glands. Longer than the Clos de Beze but that wine is a bit sweeter today, with darker, more exotic flavors. This Chambertin is not yet showing its flesh but if it puts on weight with extended bottle aging, which I expect it to do, it may eventually merit a perfect score. A monument of the vintage. |

Vinous (97+)Bright, saturated deep red. Incredible multidimensional nose combines cherry, raspberry, gunflint, crushed rock, flowers and oak spices; youthfully reserved but already remarkably complex. Thick but magically light on its feet, with penetrating red fruit flavors framed and carried by explosive salty minerality. This wonderfully vibrant, refined wine is showing no sign of shutting down but it's hard to imagine that it won't go through a sullen stage on its way to peak maturity in 12 to 15 years. The sweet but firmly structured finish saturates the palate with red fruits, minerals and spices. |

Vinous (94-96+)The 2010 Clos de la Roche is fascinating to taste after the Mazis. The Clos de la Roche is all about power, structure and length, qualities it has in spades. There is huge depth and serious extract to the fruit, with equally big tannins to provide support. Layers of intense fruit are intermingled with persistent saline notes on the vibrant, finely chiseled finish. It will take years for the tannins to start melting away, but when they do the 2010 will be a dazzling wine. Actually, it already is. |

Vinous (97)I must confess, I had some misgivings about opening Rousseau’s 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques, as I feared it might not be ready to drink. Those concerns were quickly dispelled as soon as I tasted it. From the very beginning, the 2010 Clos St. Jacques is a total stunner. Deep and beautifully layered, with exquisite aromatics and tons of class, the 2010 is one of the wines of the night. Sure, the 2010 will be even better in a few years, or maybe even decades, but it is flat-out gorgeous today. What a wine! |

Vinous (90-92)(from 55-year-old vines picked six days after the Vosne-Romanee premier crus in 2010): Good full, bright medium red. Aromas of small wild dark berries, licorice, coffee and sweet oak perked up by pepper and herbs. Fat and sweet, but without quite the definition of the Reignots, Clos Vougeot or Echezeaux. With its creamy, candied qualities and herbal edge, this suggests a wider range of fruit ripeness than most of the other 2010s here. A bit clenched on the back. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2010 Beauséjour Becot has a fleshy, meaty bouquet that feels more open and mature than its peers in this flight, touches of oxtail and iron filings emerging with time. Burghound (92-94)This is reduction free with an exuberant and highly complex nose of spice, earth and well-layered red pinot fruit aromas that display a background hint of plum. There is fine richness to the pure and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate with an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract on the gorgeously complex finish. This is finer than the Clos de Vougeot and just as complex if somewhat less firmly structured though this will also require plenty of cellar time. |

Vinous (95+)Good full red. Vibrant perfume of raspberry, spices and minerals. Boasts outstanding dark berry intensity, with powerful crushed-stone minerality and a saline quality giving great energy and tension to the middle palate. Finishes with remarkable rising length, utterly suave tannins and superb lift. Like the Suchots, this is already wonderfully aromatic but is built for a decade or two of improvement in bottle. |

Vinous (94)Good deep red. Unusually closed and less exotic than usual on the nose for this cuvee, hinting at crushed raspberry and Oriental spices, with notes of leather, mocha and minerals emerging with air. Concentrated and sweet, boasting a wonderfully sappy core of raspberry and mineral flavors. The very supple tannins arrive quite late and spread out to dust the palate. The superb rising finish perfumes the mouth. A beauty, but hands off for at least five or six years. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2010 Beauséjour Becot has a fleshy, meaty bouquet that feels more open and mature than its peers in this flight, touches of oxtail and iron filings emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, well judged acidity, quite cohesive with an attractive, iron-tinged silky finish that feels long and delineated. This is another very promising Right Bank wine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. |
