France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Dried out a little on the end but the contrast between the flesh of this wine and skinniness of the Margaux tasted immediately beforehand could not have been more marked. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. Wine Advocate (94)

One of the best wines of the vintage, this is a classic Pauillac that is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. Dense ruby/purple in color with a glorious nose of melted licorice, lavender, barbecue smoke, black currants, and graphite, the wine is tannic, classically structured with an opaque ruby/purple color, beautiful definition, and a 1996-ish personality. This deep, full-bodied, elegant yet powerful 2002 should age handsomely for over two decades. Some patience will be required since this vintage exhibits more muscle and virility than normal. The 2002 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons, the original release and aged on crown seal, is tremendous. Wow. Ample, sweeping and dramatic, the 2002 is utterly captivating. Smoke, graphite, ash, apricot jam and pastry are some of the many nuances that come alive in the glass, with a top note of reduction that is very appealing. On this day, the regular release is just a touch ahead of the Oenothèque. It’s hard to say exactly why that is, but I suspect that the post-disgorgement time is optimal. This is the finest bottle of the 2002 I have ever tasted. Disgorged July 2010.

  • Piper Heidsieck Rare 2002 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (98)

Best in Show Award Pale gold in colour; very fine mousse. Fresh, pure and invigorating aromas in which green apple and citrus slowly give way to subtle, soft brioche, ivy leaf and plant sap; just a brush stroke of cream behind. This is a lean, pure Champagne of perfectly poised ripeness and restraint, very long in flavour, with the creamy richness of autolysis perfectly judged -- supportive but in no way obtrusive. The minority Chardonnay still takes a leading role at this stage; the majority Pinot Noir provides a pure frame and canvas. Exciting now, but don't hurry to drink, even though it already has a decade and a half behind it: there are further rewards ahead.

  • Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (96)

As remarkable as it may sound given the typical state of evolution for the average 2002 white, this is still aromatically youthful if not primary with its densely fruited and gorgeously complex aromas of various white orchard fruit, white flowers, spice, jasmine tea and soft wood and petrol scents. There is excellent concentration to the broad-shouldered and overtly muscular flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering strikingly good complexity on the powerful, driving and explosively long finish where a bit of wood toast emerges. While the '02 Ramonet Monty is drinking beautifully well, make no mistake that it will continue to hold, and may even improve if only slightly, for at least another decade. In sum, this is really most impressive.

The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot has a high-toned and rather ersatz bouquet compared to its peers. The palate is soft and mushroomy, fully mature but lacking tension and precision, quite dull on the finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.

  • Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs 2002 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (97)

  • Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2002 (6x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (98)

With its gold color and mature, toasty flavors, this is possibly the greatest Winston Churchill ever. It has weight and richness, with a dense, full and rich texture. It's in perfect balance, bringing together maturity and crisper apple and green plum fruit flavors that are cut with lemon. A mineral edge gives a nervy character that will allow this magnificent wine to age further.

  • Potinet Ampeau Pommard 1er Cru Pezerolles 2002 (6x75cl)

The Potinet Ampeau Pommard 1er Cru Pezerolles 2002 is an excellent vintage constructed using traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques. Assembled in the celebrated vineyards of the Potinet Ampeau estate, based in Meursault, the heart of premier cru, this specialty exemplifies the care taken in each harvest and artisanal methodology. Pinot Noir grapes, hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, have imbued this wine with exquisitely rich, dark fruit flavours.

Its maturation in French oak barrels lends a subtle spice that overlays the exquisite silkiness that Pommard wines are renowned for. The diligent stewardship of family-run Potinet Ampeau over more than a century ensures an unwavering commitment to quality, from grape to glass. Rich, sultry and mature, the Potinet Ampeau Pommard 1er Cru Pezerolles 2002 offers an intensely satisfying journey for the wine aficionado. A hub of this masterpiece whispers softly of historical lineage and fervent dedication to fine viticulture.

  • Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes 2002 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (93)

Pure, scented aromas of lime and mint. Chewy, sweet and superrich, with very intense lime and floral flavors framed by vibrant acidity. Boasts a wonderfully fine texture and very firm structure for aging. Powerful but also very classy wine, with terrific inner-mouth energy and superb length for a premier cru.

  • Rayas Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2002 (1x75cl)
  • Rene Engel Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

Another strong showing for the 2002 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from the late Philippe Engel. The nose is ethereal, offering raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, and the palate is extraordinary in terms of focus. The finish oddly reminds me of Engel's Grands Echézeaux. Magnificent. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London.
