France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)

(25% vendange entier): Good bright red with ruby tones. Precise aromas of black cherry, licorice and herbs. Spicy and penetrating on the palate; a bit strict but offers a great combination of sweetness and minerality. At once classy and powerful, finishing with a lingering element of saline minerality and firm, noble tannins that saturate the entire mouth.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Deep red with ruby highlights. Riper and blacker but a bit monolithic on the nose and palate. Black cherry and licorice scents lead to dark raspberry and crushed stone in the mouth. Not at all herbal but in a very cool style and tightly wound. This powerful, backward, youthfully uncompromising wine is hard to taste today owing to its firm tannic spine and strong medicinal reserve. Will it ultimately surpass the more sensual Grands-Echézeaux?

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

(25 hectoliters per hectare): Full, dark red. Tight, primary, slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Densely packed, rich and broad; a distinctly horizontal, pliant style of Clos Vougeot, no doubt a function of the very warm, sunny vintage. Today this is sweeter and more open-knit than the Grands-Echézeaux but both of these wines should easily age for two decades or more. (Mallard noted that on some days this wine comes across as stricter, more Cistercian.) Finishes with spicy, ripe tannins and terrific energy and length.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is the standout wine for Domaine d'Eugenie this year. It was cropped at 16 hectoliters per hectare (compared to 38 hectoliters per hectare in 2017). It easily is blessed with the finest aromatics from the domaine: red and black fruit, fine mineralité with just a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity—real personality here, with a very pure and tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I like the way it just keeps rolling across the senses. This is extremely sophisticated and full of breeding.
  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is well defined and precise, with cranberry, raspberry and vibrant red cherry scents that soar from the glass. The oak here is very well assimilated. The well-balanced palate offers fine but firm tannins that frame the black cherry and raspberry fruit. Lovely tension and mineralité on the finish, which delivers just the right amount of spice and length. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised with 70% whole bunch and around 80% new oak. Here, I feel that the stems are just jutting out a little more compared to the Grands Echézeaux and slightly obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, fine backbone, perhaps without the same amplitude on the finish as either the Echézeaux or its "big brother". Still, this will give two or three decades of drinking pleasure.

Good full deep red. Smoky aromas of cherry, currant and iron, lifted by floral and mineral elements. Densely packed but closed, and distinctly dry after the Mazis and Latricieres. Cool flavors of dark berries, minerals and mint. Strong tannins coat the teeth and currently shorten the wine fruit. Good deep red. Wild black cherry, licorice, crushed herbs, earth and a smoky nuance on the nose. Sweet on entry, then cool and medicinal in the mid-palate, with black cherry and licorice flavors dominating. Earthy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in a discreet touch of wood spice are laced with earth, forest floor and violet hints. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. This is quite serious and clearly very structured yet it stops short of being overtly old school in style; that said, this will not be an early drinker.

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has turned out very well indeed, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of dark wild berries, smoked meats, incense, spices and dark chocolate that's framed by a lavish but nicely integrated application of high-quality new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and velvety, with a layered and impressively concentrated core, melting tannins and a long, sapid finish. It's one of the highlights of Faiveley's red portfolio this year, punching above its weight in the usual hierarchy.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru comes from Faiveley’s 1.27-hectare parcel. It has a floral nose with potpourri and light lavender aromas that partially occlude the fruit expression. The palate is lithe on the entry with modest depth and quite tertiary in style, and a keen thread of acidity lends freshness on the finish. A little austere in style, it opens with aeration to offer a very minerally finish. Here, it put the Echézeaux 2019 in its place.

Faiveley is the proprietor of three parcels that total 1.27ha in the Clos de Vougeot, including a portion in Grand Maupertuis and two parcels nearer the bottom. The fruit was picked very ripe (14.5%) and partially destemmed before fermentation, with a very careful extraction and ageing in cask (half new).

Pale but pretty colour. Light fruit on the nose. Spared from the frost, and as is typical of such cuvees in 2021, the wine feels more complete – in fact, displaying a particularly long finish. The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from three separate parcels located at both the bottom and the top of the clos. It has a well-defined bouquet of bright red berry fruit, cranberry, morello cherry and touches of pomegranate; an underlying tertiary note becomes more evident with aeration. The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru does not deliver quite as much intensity and cohesion as the Echézeaux, offering leafy red berry fruit on the nose, which is quite muted at the moment and needs more presence. • Faiveley Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (96)

The wine has an inky dark colour and pronounced aromas of blackberry, fig, smoke and spice. The texture is lush, yet there are firm tannins and the wine never seems overbearing or aggressive - everything is kept in elegant balance.

  • Faiveley Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2021 (2x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

Pale but pretty colour. Light fruit on the nose. Spared from the frost, and as is typical of such cuvees in 2021, the wine feels more complete – in fact, displaying a particularly long finish. This avoids also the blocky side of Clos Vougeot, showing instead a rather fine fresh but light strawberry fruit. One could almost suggest that it is ethereal for this appellation! Drink from 2030-2038.

  • Fourrier Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18)

Three casks from three different spots. Slightly cloudy cherry red. Really rich and solid. From a very good producer (a long-term proposition) and made in the domaine philosophy. Lots of tannin on the end. Very energetic. Very slightly bitter on the end.

  • Francois Lamarche Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from three separate parcels located at both the bottom and the top of the clos. It has a well-defined bouquet of bright red berry fruit, cranberry, morello cherry and touches of pomegranate; an underlying tertiary note becomes more evident with aeration. The fleshy, generous palate is very harmonious, with supple tannins and good acidity. Lightly spiced with a dash of white pepper and rosemary toward the gentle finish. Like other wines from Lamarche, this is understated but very pure and charming.

  • Francois Lamarche Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru does not deliver quite as much intensity and cohesion as the Echézeaux, offering leafy red berry fruit on the nose, which is quite muted at the moment and needs more presence. The palate has a little more chutzpah, displaying better grip than anticipated and a tightly wound, lightly spiced finish. It doesn’t quite make a statement like some other wines from the clos this vintage.

  • Francois Lamarche Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a tightly-wound nose that took time to open in the glass, touches of crushed rock filtering through the redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is smooth and sensual, more density and sinew than the Echezeaux and a touch more salinity and energy on the finish. This should age well, but deserves three to four years in bottle.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Light to medium red, less nose than for the Echezeaux, but at least as much fruit on the palate with both more tannins and acidity. This may yet put on more weight in the rest of its elevage. More energy at the back. Drink from 2027-2033.

  • Frederic Magnien Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91-94)

A pungent nose is composed by notes of menthol, mocha, black cherry, poached plum, warm earth and soft wood nuances. The exceptionally rich and round flavors possess fine volume and a seductively textured and sappy mouthfeel, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, powerful and firmly structured finale. This is quite good and especially for its excellent persistence. 2031+

  • Genot Boulanger Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru had just a very tiny reduction on the nose (the wine had not been racked, so expected), though there is plenty of fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine weight, slightly granular in texture with good concentration and structure towards the persistent finish. This has pedigree.
