France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is one-third whole cluster, less than in recent years according to winemaker Brian Sieve, with almost 50% new oak. It has a beautiful bouquet with scents of blackberry, raspberry coulis, crushed strawberries and seams of wet limestone underneath. The oak is seamlessly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very focused and taut with pure black cherry and crushed strawberry on the tensile finish. This is a very stylish, quite ambitious Clos de Vougeot. Good deep red. Sexy aromas of musky red berries, wild cherry and coffee; aromatic if a bit reduced. Sweet, smooth and suave, if a bit youthfully compressed. Not at all a big wine but fine-grained and fresh for its high level of ripeness (this was not chaptalized). This offers lovely fruit and shows a gentle hand with the extraction. Good medium red. Subtle, pure, high-pitched aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violet and licorice. Chewy, intense and penetrating, with plenty of stem-driven energy behind the saline, soil-driven flavors of minerals, dark berries and graphite. There's no easy sweetness here, but this builds impressively in the glass and leaves the taste buds quivering on the very long, lightly peppery back end. These firm tannins will need a decade of patience. Like the Grands-Echezeaux, this wine was aged in 80% to 90% new oak.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)

(half of this wine is made with whole clusters, the other half destemmed; my note is on the blend) Good ruby-red. Rich aromas of blackberry, chocolate, espresso and flinty minerality, with pepper and menthol notes from the stem influence. Then large-scaled and creamy but with solid underlying structure and noteworthy tension in spite of having the highest pH of these 2009s. More backward and medicinal than the Grands-Echezeaux. Really builds on the back end, finishing very long and rich, with powerful tannins that will require at least several years of bottle aging. Cabernet-like in its volume and structure. Incidentally, winemaker Mallard noted that the vendange entier component gives the blend its bones, while the destemmed portion provides the flesh, but I found a sample of the former component to be wonderfully full, sweet and creamy.

Deep red with ruby highlights. Riper and blacker but a bit monolithic on the nose and palate. Black cherry and licorice scents lead to dark raspberry and crushed stone in the mouth. Not at all herbal but in a very cool style and tightly wound. This powerful, backward, youthfully uncompromising wine is hard to taste today owing to its firm tannic spine and strong medicinal reserve. Will it ultimately surpass the more sensual Grands-Echézeaux?

(25 hectoliters per hectare): Full, dark red. Tight, primary, slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Densely packed, rich and broad; a distinctly horizontal, pliant style of Clos Vougeot, no doubt a function of the very warm, sunny vintage. Today this is sweeter and more open-knit than the Grands-Echézeaux but both of these wines should easily age for two decades or more. (Mallard noted that on some days this wine comes across as stricter, more Cistercian.) Finishes with spicy, ripe tannins and terrific energy and length.

  • Denis Mortet Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)

Good deep red. Sexy aromas of musky red berries, wild cherry and coffee; aromatic if a bit reduced. Sweet, smooth and suave, if a bit youthfully compressed. Not at all a big wine but fine-grained and fresh for its high level of ripeness (this was not chaptalized). This offers lovely fruit and shows a gentle hand with the extraction. Impressive rising finish is subtle and long, with tannins quite suave.

  • Denis Mortet Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from Mortet's 0.32-hectares of 50-year old vines, is clean and precise on the nose, beautifully defined with pure Morello cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and orange sorbet scents that are utterly seductive. Brilliant focus. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigree tannins, layers of sorbet-fresh red fruit cut through with razor-sharp acidity. This must constitute one of the finest Clos de Vougeot that Mortet has ever overseen. The epitome of intensity and elegance.

  • Drouhin-Laroze Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Drouhin-Laroze has a composed bouquet of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, a touch of cigar ash and woodland aromas developing close behind. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, low acidity, rather extracted and perhaps, just a little monotone on the finish. Maybe it will develop more personality in bottle...it should do.

  • Drouhin-Laroze Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from the upper slopes of the vineyard, has a rich and opulent bouquet with precocious mulberry and blueberry scents, violet and desiccated orange peel. The 30% whole bunches is discretely embedded in the black fruit, lending crunchiness to the texture. This displays impressive depth; notwithstanding infectious energy and a vibrant finish. Excellent - this is one of the best grand crus from Drouhin-Laroze this vintage.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in 80% new oak. It has an expressive and aromatic bouquet with pretty blueberry, raspberry and iodine aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very effervescent from the start with vivid red and black fruit infused with orange zest and light fig notes. Very fine.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Good medium red. Subtle, pure, high-pitched aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violet and licorice. Chewy, intense and penetrating, with plenty of stem-driven energy behind the saline, soil-driven flavors of minerals, dark berries and graphite. There's no easy sweetness here, but this builds impressively in the glass and leaves the taste buds quivering on the very long, lightly peppery back end. These firm tannins will need a decade of patience. Like the Grands-Echezeaux, this wine was aged in 80% to 90% new oak.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

(25% vendange entier): Good bright red with ruby tones. Precise aromas of black cherry, licorice and herbs. Spicy and penetrating on the palate; a bit strict but offers a great combination of sweetness and minerality. At once classy and powerful, finishing with a lingering element of saline minerality and firm, noble tannins that saturate the entire mouth.

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Deep red with ruby highlights. Riper and blacker but a bit monolithic on the nose and palate. Black cherry and licorice scents lead to dark raspberry and crushed stone in the mouth. Not at all herbal but in a very cool style and tightly wound. This powerful, backward, youthfully uncompromising wine is hard to taste today owing to its firm tannic spine and strong medicinal reserve. Will it ultimately surpass the more sensual Grands-Echézeaux?

  • Eugenie Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)
