France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

  • Ponsot Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru VV 2019 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (92-94)

(the majority of the fruit derives from Le Petit Maupertuis). Once again, the restrained nose is quite deeply pitched with more earth influences on the softly spicy aromas of poached plum, dark raspberry and hints of cassis. There is both excellent vibrancy and delineation to the muscular large-scaled flavors that retain a relatively elegant mouthfeel, and particularly so for Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere and exceptionally firm finale. Despite being constructed to age for 20+ years, this finish is not particularly hard or rigid. With that said, ample patience will definitely be in order. (92-94)/2039+

Dark red with ruby highlights. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol are leavened by a distinct medicinal reserve. Sweet and thick but penetrating as well, with the black fruit flavors saturating the mouth. Finishes broad, gripping and long, with sweet tannins coating the teeth. I give this the edge over the young 2014 Clos Vougeot, but between the two vintages of Charmes-Chambertin I prefer the '14.

  • Rene Engel Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 1991 (8x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (87)

In 1991, young Philippe Engel decided to utilize a higher percentage of new oak, extend his cold maceration prior to fermentation to 4-5 days, and put his wines in the bottle without filtration. The results are wines that rival his 1990s. The Echezeaux sweetness is a characteristic of the Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echezeaux. The 1991 Clos de Vougeot reveals a ripe cassis component, as well as a chunky, rich, fleshy texture. The tannins do not dominate either the Clos de Vougeot or Grands Echezeaux. Rather, the wines are characterized by their perfumed personalities, expansive, rich, supple flavors, and velvety textures. Both are exceptionally well made 1991s. The Grands Echezeaux displays more dimension to its bouquet and flavors. Both wines should drink well for a decade. • Rene Engel Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 1996 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-93)

This medium-to-dark ruby-colored wine was outstanding. Profound aromas of deeply ripe red cherries, blueberries, and blackberries steeped in hoisin sauce are followed by a medium-to-full-bodied, beautifully ripened, and silky-textured core of black fruits, beef blood, porcini mushrooms, and hints of earth. This wine's outstanding finish reveals loads of supple tannins complemented by blackberry flavors. Projected maturity: 2003-2009.

Another strong showing for the 2002 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from the late Philippe Engel. Deep red-ruby. Cherry liqueur, crushed rock, exotic spices and a lightly medicinal quality on the nose. Dense, velvety and sweet, with terrific vinosity and underlying spine intensifying the black cherry and dark berry flavors. Quite sweet on the back end, with the substantial tannins arriving late. This wine includes fruit from five different sources and very different sites, according to Potel. Splendid potential.

Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate on the slightly reduced nose, with a spicy quality emerging with air. Wonderfully plush, concentrated and velvety, conveying a spherical impression of volume that has something in common with the Saint-Georges. The black cherry flavor is complicated by hints of earth and flowers and enlivened by saline minerality. This edge-free wine maintains its freshness on the back end, finishing with fine, dusty, building tannins and lovely perfume. At this point in our tasting, Liger-Belair noted that in some vineyards in 2016, he lost 40% of his grapes to frost and another 20% to galloping mildew, noting that he was late on one vineyard treatment and spent the following weeks in reaction mode.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains 40% whole cluster from the oldest parts of the vineyard, the younger vines de-stemmed. Apparently it struggled to complete its alcoholic fermentation and had to be transferred back into barrel, where it finally finished in June 2019. It has an intriguing bouquet with brown spices and black pepper infusing the vibrant red fruit that leaps from the nose. The palate is well balanced with fine, saturated tannins. The whole bunch is very well assimilated and lends complexity and precision on the finish. Superb.

    Wine Advocate (91)

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Tortochot has a slightly savory bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, quite complex and opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a keen line of acidity and a pleasing bitterness with a sustained, quite tensile finish. Give this two or three more years in bottle and you will have a very interesting Clos Vougeot. This is much better than the bottle I encountered at the domaine last year.

  • Tortochot Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is laden with dark cherries, damson on the nose and very fruit-forward, but I feel at the expense of terroir expression. The palate is quite candied on the entry, powerful and demonstrative. Though the fruit profile is attractive, I think this is just a bit overwhelming and needs to show more restraint.
