France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

    Wine Advocate (89)

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, though it seems foursquare and shows slight attenuation toward the finish. It actually showed better when re-tasted a month later at the domaine when it exhibited finer precision. Drink 2014-2020.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. Impressive and this comes highly recommended. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. Initially there was a touch of reduction so be sure to decant this. With a few minutes of air pretty aromas of complex and cool red pinot fruit, earth and a hint of humus give way to equally earthy medium weight flavors that possess good volume and a fine muscularity, all wrapped in a very firm but not aggressive finish. This understated effort should be lovely in a few years.

    Wine Advocate (91)

The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 41-year-old vines. It has an attractive, open-knit bouquet that veers toward a more terroir-driven profile than a more typical fruit-driven one: tart cherries rapidly given way to woodland, autumnal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and poise. While it does not quite possess the persistency of the Mazis-Chambertin, it is nicely focused and poised. If seeking a more understated Charmes-Chambertin and you are unable to forage one from Denis Bachelet (join the club), then do consider this as an alternative. Drink 2015-2025+

Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. Burghound (91)

  • Tortochot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90)

Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Cellar this for a couple of years and see what comes out the other side.

An utterly beguiling wine, the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyères is constantly changing in the glass. Violets, sage, rosemary, pipe tobacco and cedar meld into a core of deep, resonant black fruit. The 2011 is marked by cool veins of minerality that give the wine its piercing intensity and brightness. At times polished and refined while at other times wilder and more extroverted, the 2011 impresses for its multiple shades of contrast. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2011 was done with 80% whole clusters and aged in 80% new oak. This is even better from bottle than it was from barrel.

  • Vougeraie Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Mazoyeres 2013 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93+)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru has a lighter bouquet than its peers, a little simplistic for a grand cru although it does improve in the glass, becoming savory with hints of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good weight if missing sophistication and breeding, showing a slight bitterness towards the dry finish and yet you cannot help but feel this is going to turn into a lovely Charmes-Chambertin. Maybe this is enduring a dumb phase ... you will just have to wait it out. Tasted September 2016.

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 80% whole cluster fruit this year, a high percentage due to the age of the vines planted in 1902. There is fine delineation here, precise black cherry and cranberry scents with a touch of cold granite. It is a nose that demands respect, deservedly so. The 2015 Charmes Chambertin les Mazoyeres Grand Cru offers up notes of red and black fruit, beetroot, earth and whole cluster spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and silky, with an expansive attack, a layered mid-palate and a long, saline finish.
