France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru was cropped at 17hL/ha with around 50% new oak. It has an exquisite, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, peony and wilted roses, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, an almost citric line of acidity with a tensile, linear yet compelling finish. Wonderful.Inc. GSTSG$4,074.92 -

Matured in 60% new oak, the 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras has an opulent bouquet with blueberry and black cherry fruit soaring from the glass, the oak neatly integrated, although I detected just a little warmth here that detracted from the delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin. There is clearly a solid backbone to this Nuits Saint Georges that lends it a Morey-Saint-Denis-like personality. There is ample blackberry and raspberry notes infused with white pepper and sage, fanning out in confident fashion towards the detailed finish. This is a sturdy and forthright 2015 that will drink beautifully over 15-20 years. This wine is superb.Inc. GSTSG$1,227.06 -
Vinous (89-91)
Bright, dark red. Attractive lift to the raspberry and floral aromas; this could hardly be more different from the village Gevrey. At once dense and creamy-sweet, conveying very good energy to the dark berry and floral flavors. Finishes bright and long, with substantial ripe, dusty tannins. Cheurlin produced just 29 hectoliters per hectares here, owing to the estate's high percentage of old vines.Inc. GSTSG$1,721.44 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)
Fullish yellow, some apples but riper here than the Coteaux Bourguignons. A little touch of oak, 25% new. This really comes into its own on the palate, still showing some oak and a bit of bacon fat but the ripe apples now give it plenty of flesh. Not mainstream but a thoroughly interesting wine. Picked a week before the reds. Drink from 2024-2027.Inc. GSTSG$778.70 -

Pinot blanc, filtered but not fined, and ready to bottle. 30% new wood and 13.46% alcohol. This is the first time this wine has hit the yield since he purchased the vineyard in 2006. The palate fills out gorgeously, while there is a fine chiselled fresh finish. Both halves of the equation work. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. GSTSG$1,021.77 -

The Henri & Gilles Remoriquet Nuits-Saint-Georges 2020 is truly the embodiment of uncompromised, cultivated pleasure from one's first, full-nosed inhalation to the last lingering sip.

The 2011 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, a subtle seawater scent that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, packed full of blackcurrant and cranberry. There is a trademark leafiness that develops towards the firm, structured finish with traces of black tea on the aftertaste. Give this another two or three years in bottle. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.Inc. GSTSG$1,445.86 -

Good bright, deep red. Blackberry, minerals and crushed stone on the nose. Densely packed and concentrated, with savory dark berry, floral and licorice flavors leading to a youthfully powerful if rather strict finish. Classic sturdy Nuits-Saint-Georges but with lovely energy and finesse to its fruit. The big tannins spread out on the back end, yet the wine maintains a light touch.Inc. GSTSG$1,589.18 -

This hails from a mid-slope premier cru on the south side of Nuits and mixes clay and limestone soils within the Gouges' 3.7ha monopole. It’s an intense, aromatic and comparatively early-drinking style with some chalky freshness, medium-weight tannins and a hint of volatility.Inc. GSTSG$1,621.88 -

Antoine Gouges says this is a cooler terroir, like its neighbor Ch nes Quarteaux, because it is flatter and the Combe des Vallerots runs down one edge. Still, the warmth of the vintage comes through in the fruit with succulent blackberries and cassis. The tannins are, again, more old school with some stern grip. The focused, long finish shows a hint of oak toast with crushed slate. Just give this some time in bottle. 2025-40Inc. GSTSG$1,709.99 -

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Racked to tank. Chaignots enjoyed a slightly better yield at just above 25 hl/ha, because there was more juice in the grapes. Full rich purple. The nose has similar basic characteristics of ripe fruit but is not too concentrated. Very good depth thereafter, and as with all the wines here the fruit is that little bit fresher on the palate than the nose. Good acidity at the finish. 14.2% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021Inc. Medium deep crimson colour. The nose shows an assured ripeness of red berry fruit, supported by a little new oak (20%). Very pretty and quite floral on the nose, yet much more solid red fruit weight on the palate, with a little vanilla from the oak playing at the edges. Good length. Drink from 2026-2031.Inc. Wine Advocate (92)
Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers felt a little reduced on the nose -- though that is common with infant Gouges. At the moment it compromises the wine's definition, which is a pity as there is attractive red cherry and redcurrant fruit waiting to surface. That will be addressed with bottle age. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, some chewiness that will dissipate with time and good depth. It feels a little chunky and uncouth towards the finish although it does improve and gain more cohesion in the glass. Time should meliorate this wine, so afford it 3-4 years in bottle. Tasted September 2016.Inc. GSTSG$1,371.18 -

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru did not suffer too much hail according to Antoine Gouges, at most 5%. This is very ripe and slightly gourmand on the nose, light savory notes emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, nicely controlled and then just tightening up towards the finish that shows just a bit of VA. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru comes across a little muted on the nose compared to its peers, maybe just a little subdued, though it will open with bottle age.
