Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Champs Chevreys 1er Cru does not quite possess the cohesion of the Les Lavières on the nose at the moment, but there is a nice touch of reduction here that I think is masking more mineralité. A notably more vibrant colour, fresh purple. This seems very youthful on the nose, not so much definition yet. The wood from this barrel is a bit more present with a dry François Frères type of toastiness. Will need a little time to settle down, but will definitely deliver. • Tawse Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres 2021 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (89-91)

Pretty and airy aromas are compared mostly by red currant, rose petal and discreet anise and newly turned earth nuances. There is noticeably better volume and mid-palate density to the utterly delicious medium weight flavors that terminate in a lightly stony, firmly austere and much more structured finale.

  • Thibault Liger-Belair Savigny-les-Beaune Clos du Village Blanc 2018 (6x75cl)

Beautifully embodying its Burgundy origin, the Thibault Liger-Belair Savigny-les-Beaune Clos du Village Blanc 2018 is an exquisite specimen. Produced by Thibault Liger-Belair, a prestigious winemaker rooted in Nuits-Saint-Georges, this unique Chardonnay is a result of masterful biodynamic winemaking techniques. Originating from a single-vineyard site in Savigny-les-Beaune, the 'Clos du Village' reveals an inviting bouquet of fragrant honeysuckle and crisp apple, leading to a palate showcasing layers of citrus and delicate oak nuances. The winemaking process is immensely meticulous, involving hand-harvesting, natural yeast fermentation, and maturation in French oak barrels, creating an exceptional profile with consistent character. Possessing a youthful sophistication and refreshing vibrancy, the Thibault Liger-Belair Savigny-les-Beaune Clos du Village Blanc 2018 is a genuine testament to the elegance and finesse of French white wines.

  • Tollot-Beaut Savigny-Champ-Chevrey 1er Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Champs Chevreys 1er Cru does not quite possess the cohesion of the Les Lavières on the nose at the moment, but there is a nice touch of reduction here that I think is masking more mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. Good depth, there is more sinew compared to the Les Lavières and I suspect it will have more longevity.

  • Tollot-Beaut Savigny-Champ-Chevrey 1er Cru 2021 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)

A notably more vibrant colour, fresh purple. This seems very youthful on the nose, not so much definition yet. The wood from this barrel is a bit more present with a dry François Frères type of toastiness. Will need a little time to settle down, but will definitely deliver. I have no qualms about giving the 2021 Champ Chevrey the benefit of the doubt. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2022

  • Tollot-Beaut Savigny-Lavieres 1er Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru has a perfumed nose, perhaps just missing a little definition due to the warmth of the growing season. The balanced palate offers sweet black cherries and raspberry fruit. Quite spicy on the midpalate, although it does not quite deliver the complexity of the 2016 or 2017 toward the finish. A Savigny more for early drinking.

  • Tollot-Beaut Savigny-Lavieres 1er Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with slightly earthy red berry fruit, touches of crushed stone, slightly peppery (though this is de-stemmed like all Tollot-Beaut’s cuvées.) The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. Good density here, maybe not the most tensile of the cuvées from the Domaine this vintage, but there is decent weight on the back end. Give it a couple of years in bottle.

  • Tollot-Beaut Savigny-Lavieres 1er Cru 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru has an attractive nose with light cranberry, raspberry and briary scents. There's a fine definition, if not huge intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a crisp line of acidity and a gentle grip toward the citrus-fresh finish. This works better than the Chorey-lès-Beaune.
