France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)Musky nose is dominated by pungent smoky minerality and crushed stone. Then fatter and chewier than the village wine, with more smoky oak and brown spices showing. Finishes with a note of tobacco. Seems less pristine and distinctive than the village wine, but there's more wine here. A sample from a second barrel was still quite bound-up, showing musky strawberry and mocha notes and a bit more clarity. |

Vinous (91+)Good full, dark red. Raspberry and stone on the nose, lifted by floral high tones. Denser and spicier than the village Chambolle, showing a bit more oak influence but not quite the pristine fruit quality of that wine. More saline and electric. Best today on the very long back end, which features firm, chewy tannins. |

Vinous (91)Medium red. Complex, slightly exotic aromas of raspberry, cherry, red licorice, minerals and smoky underbrush. Saline and classically dry on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity giving the wine a rather suave texture. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and lingering notes of earth and dried herbs. |

Vinous (94)The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a very refined bouquet, quite sensual in style with intense red cherries and wild strawberry fruit infused with minerals. This is just pure class - as good as you will find from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, and very cohesive. A very elegant and refined finish. Simply one of the finest Fuées the Domaine has ever made. Tasted at the Domaine. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a vivid bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and raspberry preserve enmeshed with crushed stone and light sous-bois scents, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, offering crisp red berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. This is so harmonious – not the most powerful Fuées I have encountered, but sleek and sensual. |

Wine Advocate (93+)Mugnier's 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées is pretty and fine-boned, wafting from the glass with notes of sweet red berries, peonies and orange zest, framed by an extremely discreet patina of sweet oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with a cool core of fruit, melting tannins and a saline finish, its structural charm renders it deceptively approachable, even if I think patience is in fact likely to be rewarded. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)A fine mid purple, the bouquet follows in the path of the village Chambolle but with much greater density. Splendid purity once again with an almost haunting quality of fruit, ripe cherries, fresh strawberry and persistent raspberry, with a fresh spicy finish. Very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Vinous (91)Bright medium red. Compelling perfume of raspberry, flowers, game and leather, still with a touch of reduction. Tactile and vibrant in the mouth, with complex flavors of red berries, flowers and flint accented by soil and light veggie nuances. Not as thick as the young 2015 but a wonderfully expressive and complete village wine. Finishes saline and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and superb length and soil character. Frederic Mugnier noted that this wine can be kept for a long time but emphasized that it doesn't benefit as much from aging as the crus do. |
