The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a generous bouquet with ebullient red fruit, strawberry and cranberry, touches of candied orange peel and white flowers, and a hint of leather indicating that secondary scents are on the horizon. The palate has a sweet, ripe entry, gentle grip, a little meaty and savoury in style with a judicious touch of iron towards the Mazoyères-like finish (where two-thirds of the fruit comes from). The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is more backward on the nose compared to the 2017, darker and blacker fruit by direct comparison, traces of autumn leaves on a muddy ground (to quote The White Stripes), fragrant and alluring. The palate has a ripe and almost opulent entry that has a touch more rondeur than the 2017 as you would expect. There is a core of sweet candied fruit here, hints of bouquet garni and bay leaf towards the structured and almost stocky finish. The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with wonderful definition, superior to the bottle poured at Burgfest four years earlier, with copious brambly red fruit, forest floor and crushed limestone. Superb delineation and transparency. The palate delivers exquisite balance, sapid in the mouth, edgy and surprisingly spicy (I cannot recall that trait before). Very intense on the finish.
