France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

The 2008 Clos Fourtet has a tightly wound bouquet with raspberry, cranberry and light tertiary aromas, a touch of bell pepper in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This Clos Fourtet boasts impressive body, almost sinewy in style, a backward 2008 Saint Émilion from Mathieu Cuvelier although I was smitten by its persistent spicy aftertaste. It clearly deserves a couple more years in bottle. One to watch carefully. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)

One of the vintage's top wines, the 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous continues to drink splendidly. Brandied cherries and dried herbs mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate is velvety and open-knit, with shadings of cocoa and a bit of savory, meaty development. It does dry out a bit as it sits in the glass, but it should continue to drink well through 2020 at least.

The 2008 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is far superior to the 2005. It is relatively backward on the nose, but it has startling delineation with open, natural red-berry fruit – predominantly freshly picked strawberries, raspberry and pomegranate. With continued aeration it offers a cheeky hint of white chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. This is very harmonious and feminine with a silky texture that lends it a Vosne-like finish. What a lovely 2008! Drink now-2022+

A wine of considerable inner tension, the 2008 Liger-Belair Échézeaux (magnum) presents a compelling dynamic of push and pull between all of the elements that are alive in the glass. Floral, savory aromatics meld into a core of intensely perfumed, powerful fruit, all supported by veins of underlying salinity that add cut. (10% vendange entier Deep ruby-red. Wild black raspberry, violet, crushed rock, mint and pepper, plus a whiff of chocolatey ripeness. Powerful, dense and sappy on entry, then superripe but bright in the middle, with a strong limestone quality that really tickles the taste buds. The medium to deep garnet colored 2008 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Pow! The nose explodes with notes of baked cherries, preserved plums, fried herbs, beef drippings and warm cassis with wafts of wood smoke, salami and tobacco leaf. Smoky scents of Latakia tobacco and an alliance of fresh and distilled raspberry rise from the glass of Bize-Leroy’s Domaine d’Auvenay 2008 Mazis-Chambertin. The alternation of smoky and brightly-fruited (raspberry and red currant) elements on the palate has its counterpart in one of textural creaminess with almost electric vivacity. A clean sense of raw red meat and a scintillating floral dimension (violet and rose); hints of vanilla and brown spices from barrel; along with licorice and black pepper, all contribute to multi-layered and dynamic complexity in this remarkable Pinot whose finish seems to soar even as it lifts one’s spirits. The paradox of levity and density found in its sibling from Chambertin is perpetuated here, even if at a slightly lower energy level. There may be more opportunities for charm and seduction here – time alone can tell, and I would want to follow this (in my dreams I would follow it in reality) for at least the next 25 years.

Experience the embodiment of Burgundian charm with D'Auvenay Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008. A veritable ambassador of its terroir, this majestic wine hails from the acclaimed soils of Côte de Nuits, known for imparting a mineral-rich complexity and earthy undertones. The D'Auvenay estate, under the stewardship of Lalou Bize-Leroy, intuitively captures the personality of each climatic year, their meticulous viticulture and non-interventionist methods presenting an authentic expression of this pure Pinot Noir. On the palate, anticipate a powerful backbone of tannins, overlaid with layered nuances of blackberry, cherry and wild herbs. Despite its grandeur, D'Auvenay Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 resonates with an elegant restraint, epitomising an age-worthy legacy sure to captivate even the most discerning oenophile.

This is the wine made from the results of a second passage through DRC’s Grands Crus, a week after the main harvest, which tends to be from the younger vines in the older vineyards. (It was also made in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006. ‘We make this wine only when we think it can announce the vintage,’ Aubert de Villiaine said, adding, ‘I’m equivocal about bottling it. There’s good fruit but it’s far from full.’) Very light, fresh nose but nothing like the usual DRC weight. Pretty but a little bit skinny.

One of the stars of the vintage, and a remarkable achievement in 2008, with impressive richness, this dense purple colored wine is almost as opaque as the 2010. Spring flowers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis and some subtle oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine that transcends the vintage character in its power, richness, and aging potential. It also exhibits tremendous precision, purity, and depth of character. It is more forward than the 2010 is likely to be, but probably not as sumptuous as the 2009 will turn out to be. If any wine can be said to represent ‘value’ among the Domaine’s 2008s, the Echezeaux is it. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2008 Richebourg sweeps across the palate with a breathtaking combination of elegance and power. It is a huge wine that boasts tons of mineral-driven, pointed fruit with more than enough depth to fill out its broad shoulders. All of the elements build gracefully towards the intense, taut finish. The Richebourg is likely to require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2043.

Jancis Robinson (16)

This is the wine made from the results of a second passage through DRC’s Grands Crus, a week after the main harvest, which tends to be from the younger vines in the older vineyards. (It was also made in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006. ‘We make this wine only when we think it can announce the vintage,’ Aubert de Villiaine said, adding, ‘I’m equivocal about bottling it. There’s good fruit but it’s far from full.’) Very light, fresh nose but nothing like the usual DRC weight. Pretty but a little bit skinny.

Vinous (89)

(a blend of Lalou Bize-Leroy's village holdings, owing to the small size of the harvest): Good deep red. Redcurrant, black cherry and a whiff of leather on the nose, plus a touch of violet. Juicy and nicely delineated, showing good inner-mouth energy and harmonious acidity. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins.

Wine Advocate (95+)

One of the stars of the vintage, and a remarkable achievement in 2008, with impressive richness, this dense purple colored wine is almost as opaque as the 2010. Spring flowers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis and some subtle oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine that transcends the vintage character in its power, richness, and aging potential. It also exhibits tremendous precision, purity, and depth of character. It is more forward than the 2010 is likely to be, but probably not as sumptuous as the 2009 will turn out to be. This is a wine to buy. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035.

Wine Advocate (94)

A magnificent sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Duhart Milon is the shrewd consumer’s wine to purchase by the case as prices do not yet reflect its qualitative resurgence. Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that came in at 13.09% alcohol, it is a surprisingly intense effort displaying a marvelous texture, plenty of black currant, licorice, unsmoked cigar tobacco and earthy characteristics, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning purity as well as density. Enjoy this top-notch 2008 over the next 20-25 years.
