Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait. |

Vinous (94)One of the highlights in the range, the 2011 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveaux Cuvée Ultra possesses superb balance. Sweet herbs, crushed rose petals, licorice, spices all meld together gracefully in the glass. This is a great example of the Perrot-Minot house style. All the elements fall into place effortlessly in a rich, resonant Chambolle endowed with tons of pure structure. Perrot-Minot used 50% whole clusters here, but they are barely noticeable. The finish simply dazzles. |

Finishes with youthful tannic grip and impressive length, leaving a suave violet note behind. Gonon told me he thinks this wine is in the process of shutting down as the tannins are much more pronounced now than they were in the early fall, and he advises waiting another three years or so before checking back in on it. |

Wine Advocate (95)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait. |
