Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has an attractive nose with quite generous red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tensile and citrus-fresh with an orange peel infused finish. Very fine.

Burghound (90-93)

(Outstanding) A deft application of wood can be found on the similar if earthier aromas where the earth is also present on the cool, pure and more mineral-driven middleweight flavors that are mouthcoating and succulent but powerful and serious on the moderately austere and sneaky long finale. Irrespective of what the label says, this is marvelous for its level.

Burghound (93-96)

Don't Miss! A more restrained, and more deeply pitched nose, grudgingly reveals its aromas of plum, black cherry, anise and a broad array of floral elements, in particular violet. The more mineral-driven middleweight flavors possess a lacy but punchy mouthfeel before concluding in a more overtly austere, serious and structured finale. Patience absolutely required if you wish to see this stunning effort at its peak. One of the best wines of the 2021 vintage.

(Outstanding) A perfumed, exuberantly fresh and ultra-elegant nose reflects notes of airy red currant, cherry, rose petal and exotic tea. The lilting, pure and energetic medium weight flavors also possess outstanding depth and persistence for a villages-level wine. Note that this is not so structured or backwards that it couldn't be approached after only a few years of keeping.

The 2009 Corton is impeccably refined from start to finish. Endless layers of red fruit, flowers, licorice and sweet spices caress the palate in this impeccable, breathtaking red. This is an absolutely gorgeous, striking wine endowed with extraordinary textural finesse and elegance. Sweet, perfumed notes caress the palate on the rich, resonant finish. In 2009, the Corton is pure finesse and class. Ideally, the 2009 is best left alone for at least a few years, but readers will need to be disciplined, as the wine is already delicious, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.

Decanter (93)

Bouchard's evocatively named parcel is a monopoly holding that covers 3.9ha on sand and gravel soils in the heart of Beaune Grèves. Picked early but still pretty ripe, this has tobacco pouch and clove aromas from 20% whole bunches, layers of mulberry and raspberry fruit, aromatic 20% new wood and a backdrop of sinewy, granular tannins.

Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Naughty heavy bottle. Medium-deep colour. Rich, multi-layered nose of slate, clove, red fruit and spice that is beautifully integrated. That integration and finesse continues through the palate, with beautiful, elegant tannins. This is a triumph of how to handle intensity and structure without being stolid. Bravo!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

This is all on the red soil part of Bonnes Mares, vinified with 100% whole bunches. Pretty lighter brighter colour, some reduction, then whole bunch strawberries. Generous fruit on the palate, quite complex, very stylish and with fine promise. A fine long aftertaste.

James Suckling (94-95)

The nose has a restrained, mineral edge. Gun-smoke and flinty notes, wild herbs and sous bois with super fine cherries, as well as crushed red flowers. All very delicate this early in its journey. The palate has a sleek and appealingly powerful feel that expands fully on fine, long and fresh tannins. The regal finish is already impressive. Try from 2023.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has quite a perfumed bouquet with brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals. This has delicacy and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh entry, blood orange and marmalade infusing the dark berry fruit. Nicely proportioned with just a little oak to be soaked up on the chewy finish. Fine. The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is showing especially well, bursting with scents of peonies, blood orange, wild plums, cassis and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and expressive, it's lively and sapid, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and powdery tannins. This derives from domaine holdings in En Orveaux, where Weber identifies appreciable diurnal shift as a source of freshness.

Indulge in the elegantly structured Boyd-Cantenac 2007, a distinguished Margaux wine crafted in the prestigious Bordeaux region of France. The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has so much fruit on the nose: blackberry, sous-bois and cedar, more rose scents than I observed out of barrel last year. I feel that this is more powerful than the 2019, an unapologetically extravagant Clos de Bèze yet with a lithe, sensual finish that actually reminds more of Armand Rousseau. Yet - it's that good.

The Bruno Clair Marsannay Rouge 2016 is a splendid embodiment of fine French winemaking. A distinctive bouquet with notes of iodine, flowers, fresh fruit and graphite, but its floral character takes on a dominant role with airing. Gorgeously juicy mouthfeel brimming with energy lengthening a finish that consolidates its profound substance but also reveals surprising subtlety and delicacy. This 2018 is perhaps an atypical Calon Ségur in the context of recent vintages, but it joins the ranks of the great ones and should gain in elegance over time. Cellaring may be required for up to twenty-five years.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)

The 2005 Canon is all brawn and muscle. Chunky tannins give the 2005 a decidedly virile feel. There is plenty of depth and freshness - this is after all one of the very best sites in all of Bordeaux - so the 2005 will hold for many years to come. Dark fruit, leather, smoke, gravel, crushed rocks and spice linger on the potent finish. Tasting the 2005 today really highlights how far Canon has come in recent years

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)

The 2018 Canon is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Maybe more so. Vertical and explosive in the glass, Canon sizzles with tension and vibrancy. Readers will find a majestic, soaring Grand Cru Classé that captures all the magic of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau. Canon exudes mind-blowing precision and deliciousness. It is another magnificent effort from Technical Director Nicolas Audebert and his team.

Wine Advocate (100)

The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar.

James Suckling (99-100)

This is so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length that goes on and on. It's medium- to full-bodied with an intensity of tannins. It remains weightless and energetic. The pH is 3.41, making this a vivid and lively wine. Currant, orange and stone. Sea salt, too. The limestone soils created a unique wine here in 2023. A blend of 71% merlot and 29% cabernet franc.

Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière is another brilliantly perfumed wine in the vintage that shines for its complexity, finesse, and nuances. Giving up awesome notes of red and black currants, tobacco, exotic flowers, cedarwood, and loamy earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautifully polished, integrated tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is serious juice that warrants at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 to 40 years.
