France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. There is a sense of class here and it has the substance to age well in bottle.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is quite open and aromatic on the nose with bright red and black fruit, iris flower and touches of blue fruit. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru has a crystalline bouquet with red cherries, cassis and iris flower, just a little reduction here that will dissipate with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Not a deep Les Murgers, this has something "airy" about it, so elegant and refined on the finish. Beautiful.

A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040.

This 0.29ha parcel was planted (or replanted) in two stages - the 1930s and 1978 - so it has a high average age but plenty of concentration and complexity. It's one of my red wines of the vintage in 2017, with a heavenly perfume, lovely wild strawberry and summer orchard scents, fine-grained tannins, some sweet spices and refreshing minerality. Stunning.

The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru is much more backward on the nose compared to the outgoing Romanée-Saint-Vivant, offering dark berry fruit, cold wet limestone, briar and hints of iris flower, but showing fabulous delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins framing extraordinary pure black fruit suffused with even more mineralité than the aforementioned RSV. It fans out wonderfully on the finish and asserts its authority over the rest of Hudelot-Noëllat’s portfolio. Brilliant.

Wine Advocate (97)

I knew that the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru would be great when I tasted it from barrel last year...but not this great. It has a wonderful, tensile bouquet that just seems to sparkle. The fruit is so crystalline and laden with energy and mineralité that you almost have to sit down! The palate is surfeit with energy, the fruit perhaps a little darker than in barrel with white pepper, spices towards the almost Richebourg-like finish. Tasting them side-by-side, I would err for this over the Richebourg - it is a magnificent wine from Charles van Canneyt.

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a satisfying bouquet with beautifully defined red fruit, potpourri, orange zest and crushed limestone. The palate leaves a few questions to be answered however. It is light-bodied, a little skeletal, which is something you never expect from this habitually opulent Grand Cru. This slightly tapers towards its strict finish, as if the wine had been rationed by the 2021 growing season, dropping away rather rapidly. I must be parsimonious with my score because it is lapped by Mugnier's Premier Crus.

Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Bright medium red. Compelling perfume of raspberry, flowers, game and leather, still with a touch of reduction. Tactile and vibrant in the mouth, with complex flavors of red berries, flowers and flint accented by soil and light veggie nuances. Not as thick as the young 2015 but a wonderfully expressive and complete village wine. Finishes saline and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and superb length and soil character. Frederic Mugnier noted that this wine can be kept for a long time but emphasized that it doesn't benefit as much from aging as the crus do.

Full medium red. Compellingly fresh, complex nose combines wild raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and mint. Wonderfully fine-grained and sappy, with its red berry, coffee and leather flavors conveying a distinctly youthful character. Boasts a terric spine of firm, integrated acidity and suave tannins and builds slowly and steadily on the rising finish. Great class here. Frédéric Mugnier recalled that he was quite happy with the quality of the 2001 tannins at the beginning and that he loves this vintage. The wines were always very pretty but now they show more structure, he told me. He added that he would still wait longer to drink this wine for more complexity and polish.

Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005.

The 2008 Musigny is an infant, but it captures the essence of this important red Burgundy vintage to the fullest. There is gorgeous subtlety and nuance to the fruit, along with magnificent aromatics and the most elegant of tannins. The 2008 needs time for the elements to harmonize, but there is no mistaking the profoundness of what is developing in bottle. Today the Musigny shows a little more density and a touch better balance with its tannins than the Bonnes Mares, but both of Mugnier’s Grand Crus in 2008 are truly grand. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048.

The 2012 Musigny opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. Wild flowers of all sorts meld into exquisite, finely-sculpted fruit all with the support of silky tannins that only add to the wine's total sense of refinement. The finish is long, seamless and haunting. There isn't too much more to say, except that the Mugnier's 2012 Musigny is one of the wines of the year.

Bright medium red. More expressive on the nose today than the Amoureuses, offering ineffable scents of black raspberry, lavender and flinty, smoky minerality. By far the plushest and deepest of these 2014s but still with outstanding definition and verve. This wonderfully fine-grained, classically dry Musigny boasts bulletproof fruit and finishes with impressive medicinal reserve. Beginning with the 2013 Musigny, Mugnier will be delaying the release of his top bottling for a minimum of two years--and possibly several years more than that--as he finds this wine especially hard to read in its extreme youth.

(18.5 hectoliters per hectare; destemmed): Good dark red. Less showy initially than the young-vines cuvée but ultimately far more complex, offering subtle scents of black raspberry, currant, graphite, smoke, soil and spices. Airy and elegant but at the same time very intensely flavored and subtly thick, with its dark berry, smoke and mineral flavors nicely framed by well-integrated acidity. The very long, slowly building finish features a copacetic combination of sweetness and ripe tannins. Made from 60-year-old vines, this wine is lower in octane and better balanced than the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru; winemaker Nadine Gublin noted that the clone the estate used to replant its Chambertin vines routinely gives more alcohol.

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has quite an understated, elegant bouquet for this vineyard, hints of salted liquorice infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin - an assertive Chambertin that feels strict and, unlike the aromatics, quite penetrating. Yet, I seek a little more nuance and preferably more red fruit towards the finish. It just needs to loosen its tie.

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.

Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a vivid bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and raspberry preserve enmeshed with crushed stone and light sous-bois scents, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, offering crisp red berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. This is so harmonious – not the most powerful Fuées I have encountered, but sleek and sensual.

Vinous (91)

Bright medium red. Compelling perfume of raspberry, flowers, game and leather, still with a touch of reduction. Tactile and vibrant in the mouth, with complex flavors of red berries, flowers and flint accented by soil and light veggie nuances. Not as thick as the young 2015 but a wonderfully expressive and complete village wine. Finishes saline and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and superb length and soil character. Frederic Mugnier noted that this wine can be kept for a long time but emphasized that it doesn't benefit as much from aging as the crus do.

Vinous (90)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers attractive brambly red fruit mixed with undergrowth and light peppery scents on the nose – very classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite taut and linear, perhaps needing just a little more matière on the finish to warrant long-term cellaring. Fine.

Wine Advocate (97)

Vinous (98)

The 2012 Musigny opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. A seemingly eternal wine with no beginning and no end, the Musigny is a wine that calls for serious introspection as it constantly changes in the glass.

Jancis Robinson (19.5)

Some vines planted in 1940s and others between 1958 and 1963. Extraordinary nose that is hugely intense and then on the palate there’s an array of flowers, red fruits and chestnut. Masses of juice. Strong texture and grainy tannins on the end and enormous power. Depth yet grace. Real refinement.

Vinous (96+)

Vinous (94)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has quite an understated, elegant bouquet for this vineyard, hints of salted liquorice infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin - an assertive Chambertin that feels strict and, unlike the aromatics, quite penetrating. Yet, I seek a little more nuance and preferably more red fruit towards the finish. It just needs to loosen its tie.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.
