A magical, perfumed bouquet of red plums, black cherries, white truffle, and white flowers just screams Saint-Emilion, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, a dense mid-palate, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the palate. Building incrementally with time in the glass, this is thrilling stuff that should offer some up-front appeal in its youth yet benefit from 7-8 years in the cellar and keep for 30 years or more. Bravo! The blend is 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc that’s still resting in 50% new French oak.

Surprisingly silky and broad, with its red fruit and smoke flavors joined by a note of milk chocolate. The wine's substantial dusty but ultimately refined tannins currently shorten its finish but there's enough mid-palate density here for this wine to come into balance with bottle aging. Finishes with hints of olive tapenade and milk chocolate. With aeration this wine showed a lovely combination of sweetness and acidity.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots, which was bottled in April 2015, already has plenty of primary red berry fruit on the nose that feels very pure - mulberry and maraschino cherry. The palate continues really where the 2012 left off: quite wondrous delineation and tension from start to finish, perhaps edgier than the 2012, with a precise finish that has the perfect amount of sappy red berry fruit. One of the best Aux Reignots in recent years, one that has really elevated to another level since I tasted in from barrel. Tasted June 2015.

The full-bodied palate is densely packed with taut, muscular black fruits and earthy layers, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully earthy. A very impressive behemoth, this is going to need a good seven to 10 years to truly show its stuff and should drink for a good 40 years and beyond.

The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with ample ripe Morello cherry, strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little more compact than the Les Perrières and with more girth towards the grippy finish. As such, give this more bottle age because it is a fine Beaune Grèves.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains one-third whole clusters and is made with 40% new oak. It has a refined and detailed bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit, raspberry and cranberry, wilted rose petal note wafting in with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a more masculine and grippy Clos de Vougeot, lightly spiced with good density and grip on the finish. It will require five years or more in the cellar but should be worth the wait.

The 2012 Corton Clos du Roi is a model of delicacy and finesse. Dark raspberries, wild flowers and savory herbs all meld together gracefully in a wine that is all about transparency, nuance and detail. Texture and a total sense of polish are some of the signatures that are impossible to miss. Dried herbs, crushed flowers and anise are all woven together nicely through to the finish.

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster but a little more new oak than the regular cuvée (as a reminder, it comes from the parcel that lies adjacent to La Tâche). It has a little more definition and darker fruit on the nose, developing more floral scents with aeration. This is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, focused and harmonious, with gentle grip toward the chalky-textured finish. It will require several years in bottle.

James Suckling (97-98)

Plenty of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate and flint aromas that follow through to a full body, yet it’s in check and focused with a beautiful framing of fine tannins. The purity of ripe fruit is impressive with cabernet really showing through. 63% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc.
