France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

  • Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis 2016 (6x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

Extremely dark ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented cherry and dark fruit preserve, exotic spice, licorice and incense aromas show sharp delineation and pick up hints of candied flowers and olive with aeration. Sweet, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Repeats the blue fruit note on an impressively persistent, spice-tinged finish that features sneaky tannins and an appealingly sweet cola flourish.

  • Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis 2017 (6x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)

I loved the 2017 Côte Rôtie Château D'Ampuis. It’s a ripe, expressive barrel sample overflowing with notions of black raspberries, cassis, vanilla bean, and incense. Medium to full-bodied, rounded, and silky, it has lots of ripe tannins as well as stunning balance. It’s in the same ballpark as the 2016 yet shows the warmer, sunny nature of the vintage.

  • Haut-Bages Liberal 2015 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2015 Haut-Bages Libéral is one of the best releases in recent years. It has an elegant bouquet of refined black cherry and crushed strawberry aromas; the oak here is very well knitted. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannin, layers of black fruit laced with tar and tobacco, and firm but not overbearing grip on the finish. Good aging potential here. Excellent. • Haut-Bailly 2010 (6x150cl)

    Decanter (100)

As ever when tasting the two together, the striking thing is the difference in character rather than quality between 2009 and 2010. This is tighter, more structured in its concentration, more broad shouldered, but still intensely impressive and full of pleasure. Neither are ready to go yet, but this feels like it will last longer, and feels extremely Haut-Bailly in spirit, with an elegant but complex personality, and a grip that doesn't make a big deal of its power but refuses to give up. Blackberry, bilberry, black chocolate and pencil. Harvest September 22 to October 14.

  • Haut-Bailly 2011 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The saturated ruby/purple-hued 2011 Haut-Bailly exhibits a glorious, subtle, noble set of aromatics consisting of red and black currants, sweet cherries, graphite, truffles and a faint hint of wood spice. The wine hits the palate with the profound elegance and purity that have become so much a characteristic under Wilmers and Sanders. Still youthful, with good acidity and freshness, this brilliant, medium-bodied 2011 needs another 4-5 years of bottle age, and should evolve effortlessly for 20-25 years.

Extremely aromatic, with incredible wet-earth, bark, stone and graphite notes on the nose, then changing to violets, blackberries and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, yet so linear and fine, with titanium tannins that go on so long. Builds and builds then just rolls around the palate through the endless finish. Real Bordeaux here. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 4% petit verdot. Exceptional. Better after 2029.

  • Haut-Batailley 2009 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2009 Haut-Batailley is statesmanlike and beautifully defined on the nose with mineral-rich black fruit, Cuban cigar and mint aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, clean and precise yet unequivocally backward and almost surly towards the grippy, saline, mineral-driven finish. This is an outstanding Pauillac in 2009 and undoubtedly this is the best bottle that I have encountered. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

The 2023 Haut-Batailley is another impressive wine from this Chateau. There's plenty of the typical dark fruit and overall breadth that is such a signature, but the tannins show greater finesse than in some prior years—a very positive evolution that continues here. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves, leather and licorice are all beautifully amplified. The 2023 marks another major step forward for Haut-Batailley.

  • Haut-Brion 1995 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The 1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas handled flawlessly. The result is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a tight but promising nose of burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant, plum-like fruit, medium to full body, a high level of ripe but sweet tannin, and a finish that goes on for a good 40-45 seconds. This wine is just beginning to emerge from a very closed state where it was unyielding and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035. Last tasted, 11/02.

From vines in Corgoloin, the 2017 Côte de Nuits-Villages unfurls in the glass with a lovely bouquet of cherries, dark berries, rose petals, orange rind and cedar. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated for the vintage, with a fleshy core of fruit, finer-grained tannins than those found in the domaine's bottlings from the Hautes Côtes, and juicy balancing acids, concluding with an elegantly chalky finish. The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyeres) shows gorgeous density and depth in a round, engaging style. There is the first whiff of secondary character to the gorgeously complex red, black and violet-infused aromas that are trimmed with a dazzling array of spice and sandalwood hints. The round, intense and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess real power and superb intensity that slowly builds from the mid-palate to the explosively persistent and robust finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the linear and stony backend that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the still notably firm tannic spine. This is a big wine but it remains impeccably well-balanced and it should live for decades, indeed it is still very much in need of more cellar time.

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyeres) shows gorgeous density and depth in a round, engaging style. This is a highly engaging, textured wine but it is also remarkably open for a grand cru, even in 2009. I am not sure it will make old bones, but it should drink nicely for a handful of years. The Charmes is made from partially purchased fruit that is used to augment the estate’s small holdings. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

  • Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 1996 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Distinctly darker red-ruby color. Floral, highly perfumed aromas of strawberry, raspberry, spearmint and sappy spices. Big, rich and silky, but very fresh and delineated, with terrific cut. Very subtle, expanding aftertaste, with slow-building, very persistent fruit and completely enrobed tannins. Concentrated, classy and complete; a thoroughly ripe Musigny that has benefitted from the late harvesting.

  • Jasmin Cote Rotie La Giroflarie 2014 (6x150cl)

    Vinous (91)

Bright ruby-red. Mineral-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry and candied licorice are accompanied by a building floral nuance. Appealingly sweet and focused on the palate, offering energetic red and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors and a hint of spicecake. Shows very good focus and energy on a long, sappy finish framed by harmonious tannins.

  • Jayer Gilles Hautes-Cotes-de-Beaune Rouge 2017 (6x150cl)

    Burghound (86-88)

Moderate reduction knocks down the fruit though there is good vibrancy and detail to the delicious flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the focused and lingering finish. This is carrying enough structure to suggest that it will need a year or two to unwind and develop better depth.

  • Jayer Gilles Hautes-Cotes-de-Beaune Rouge 2018 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (88-90)

Offering up aromas of cherries and cassis, deftly framed by a touch of new oak, the 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids. Still primary and youthful, it had yet to be bottled when I tasted it.

  • Jayer Gilles Hautes-Cotes-De-Nuits 2017 (6x150cl)

    Burghound (86-89)

A pretty and very fresh nose combines notes of both red and dark cherry with an airy array of floral nuances. Once again there is good intensity and vibrancy to the slightly bigger and richer flavors that possess a bit better depth and persistence on the mildly more structured finale. This is very good for its level and is worth considering provided you can allow it at least a few years of cellar time.

Racy wild strawberries and raspberries with white pepper, agave and dried herbs. Fresh, medium-bodied palate with silky, refined tannins spreading evenly across the palate. Juicy and bright finish with lovely, herbal allure. Extremely drinkable now, but will hold, too.

  • Jean Fournier Marsannay Rouge Le Chapitre 2015 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Bourgogne Chapitre Vieilles Vignes, which now includes a small parcel of younger vines, is one of the best generic red Burgundy wines that you can find. This does not disappoint. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with blackberry and raspberry aromas, real intensity, almost brooding in quality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite rounded redcurrant and cranberry notes on the entry, wonderful acidity and genuine weight and presence on the finish. Never underestimate the quality of this wine.

  • Jean Gautreau 2014 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 2014 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot picked between September 23 and October 11. It has a much more appealing bouquet than the 2013, offering a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and smoke; clarity increases with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, showing supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and a well-defined, sensual finish that takes the oak in stride. This is an excellent Cuvée Jean Gautreau that should age with style. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

  • Jean Grivot Richebourg Grand Cru 2005 (6x150cl)

    Burghound (97)
