France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

Wine Advocate (88+)

I seldom taste the regional appellations on my visits to the Domaine Dugat-Py, so when I saw the 2015 Bourgogne Cuvée Halinard on a Côte d'Or wine list, I made a point of ordering it. This is a lovely wine, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of red cherries, cassis, grilled meat and rich soil, subtly framed by a judicious touch of recently used oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of ripe but savory fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish, with juicy balancing acids. The substance that is this domaine's calling card is certainly present, and it will undoubtedly improve with five to ten years of bottle age—at maturity, I suspect it will embarrass many village wines. Interestingly, it's both a touch more savory and a touch more structured than the lovely 2015 Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Claude Dugat that I tasted a few days before.

A top note of herbal tea sits atop the pretty aromas of dark berry, floral and a whiff of humus that is very Gevrey in character. Saturated medium ruby. Penetrating, superripe, slightly porty aromas of medicinal black cherry, cocoa powder, menthol and damp earth. Generous, pliant and really stuffed with fruit; very solid wine with lovely restrained sweetness. Powerful flavor of black plum outlasts the big chewy-but-ripe tannins. This will get sweeter as the tannins melt. But the '99 may be even more impressive.

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is laced with tobacco, earthiness, smoke and dark red fruit. The Champeaux is intense and a bit sauvage, with tons of personality. There is nothing subtle here. A virile, imposing wine, the Champeaux is endowed with considerable power and structure, both of which suggest it will need time to fully come together.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has an intense black cherry and raspberry coulis scented bouquet, plenty of concentration here, unsurprising since the old vines yielded around 25hl/ha. The palate is well balanced. The 50% whole bunches are neatly integrated, with slightly chewy tannin and a citrus, quite focused orange rind-tinged finish.

Burghound (89-91)

A top note of herbal tea sits atop the pretty aromas of dark berry, floral and a whiff of humus that is very Gevrey in character. The sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors are not as dense as they usually are but they possess lovely depth and persistence on the somewhat austere bitter cherry pit-inflected finish.

The 2016 Fixin Village was taken from foudres that had been racked one month earlier. There is no new oak on this cuvée. It has a crisp redcurrant and cranberry-scented bouquet with a hint of wet clay coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, crisp acidity, quite linear at the moment with a tightly knit, lightly spiced finish. This is a worthy follow-up to the 2015.

Vinous (91)

Saturated medium ruby. Penetrating, superripe, slightly porty aromas of medicinal black cherry, cocoa powder, menthol and damp earth. Generous, pliant and really stuffed with fruit; very solid wine with lovely restrained sweetness. Powerful flavor of black plum outlasts the big chewy-but-ripe tannins. This will get sweeter as the tannins melt. But the '99 may be even more impressive.

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 2008 Beychevelle has a lifted, graphite and tertiary scented bouquet, gaining intensity with aeration, a subtle mulch-like aroma tucked beneath the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, blackberry and bilberry fruit laced with cedar. It feels quite solid towards the back end with an insistent grip. As such, it is not a refined Beychevelle, but it is structured and a candidate for long-term ageing. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)
