France - All Red Wines
France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.
In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.
In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.
The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.
Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
The second vineyard to be picked, 50% whole bunch vinification, with 25% new wood. This is a draining sandy soil which gets direct sun only in the morning, so not hot but dry. 12.8% alcohol. A dense dark black purple. For the moment the whole bunches speak quite loudly. Dark fruit, rather exciting, shows the oak a bit, not all together but there is a lot of wine here. When this does come together it will be rather impressive. Tasted: December 2021Inc. GSTSG$1,256.57 -

These vines sit in deeply clay soils, which graciously help shield the vines from heat spells. Nicolas Groffier used 100% whole bunches (the berries are so small he doesn't want to damage the fruit) but only 20% new oak. The result is a finely scented Chambolle with pure black cherries, blackberry coulis and licorice. The medium-bodied structure is focused rather primly between the resounding acidic refreshment and sculpted tannins. 2025-35Inc. GSTSG$974.98 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)
(97% merlot and 3% cabernet sauvignon) Good medium ruby. High-pitched, high-toned, precise aromas of blackberry, violet, rose petal, minerals and mint; even more like Vosne-Romanee than usual. Sweet, supple and juicy, with sappy flavors of crushed black fruits, spices and bitter chocolate. Not overly fleshy or sweet but has good density, suave tannins and lovely persistence.Inc. The 2017 Chambolle Musigny Clos de l'Orme wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, pomegranate and rose petals, deftly framed with a judicious touch of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb concentration and a fleshy but crystalline core of fruit that's striking for its purity and lift, concluding with a long finish.Inc. Vinous (95-97)
The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a very intense and opulent bouquet that is currently less expressive than the Les Suchots, but I find more breeding and delineation here, more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, wonderful structure, certainly the spiciest as if there is some whole bunch in here (there is none).Inc. GSTSG$5,503.56 -

The 1988 Talbot is dark ruby, with a well-focused personality brimming with spicy, chocolatey, blackcurrant, leathery, herbal fruit buttressed by good acidity and high tannins. In the mouth, the wine has a game-like, smoky, beefy character. If the tannins fade a little and the fruit takes over, this will be an outstanding wine. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2015.Inc. There are only three barrels of this in 2012 (at the best of times, it's a hand-made, small quantity wine), but what a sublime Musigny it is. Floral and scented with velvety tannins, effortless concentration, some spicy whole bunch notes, subtle oak and a sappy, sikly mid-palate. So good, you could drink it now. But wait!Inc. GSTSG$3,278.52 -
Vinous (92)
(aged in 60% new oak): Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of dark fruit liqueur, vanilla, incense and candied violet carry a spicy topnote. Juicy black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors become sweeter and deeper with air. Rich and seamless in texture, with very good finishing clarity, well-knit tannins and lingering floral and fruitcake notes.Inc. GSTSG$1,253.28
