France - All White Wines
France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.
In Burgundy, the appellations of Chablis, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.
Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.
In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.
Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

Vinous (90)
First harvested in 2014, this 10,000-vine plot was created by basically exploding large blocks of flint with dynamite to obtain a flint-rich vineyard full of large rocks. The result is a creamy, silken 2019 Pouilly-Fumé Barre à Mine that is welcoming; flavor-wise, it's all ground almonds and oyster shell with masses of acidity. There's a firmness on the finish due to the flinty soils, providing upright structure and freshness, but once again, as with other 2019s, the alcohol gets in the way of the finish. An appetizing yet structured wine.Inc. GSTSG$540.07 -
Vinous (93)
Produced from a flint site that needed to be blown up to make the terroir and made from relatively young vines, this is initially a tender and supple style with a whiff of gunsmoke/flint, a taut line of precision that runs through its core, a mere hint of green herbs reminding you that Pouilly is a Sauvignon producer and even a hint of white pepper. It's a powerful style that has an attractive sense of bitterness holding it together. At just 13%, this is wonderfully balanced, aromatic and driven in this vintage. You may even feel this sense of spice that warms the palate, almost like you've had a warming Indian curry - it's not the alcohol but something else - maybe it's the lint. Unique and intriguing.Inc. My birth year will not go down in history as the stuff of legends: a relatively cool year without much botrytis and a fairly low residual level for the 1981 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon. It's a touch smoky with some earthy characters alongside sweet apple. While it's sweet (76g/L) and round, it retains a surprising amount of tension, providing an almost refreshing finish. It's a fairly straightforward sweet style with modest length but it provided good milestone toasting.Inc. GSTSG$1,110.49 -

Hailing from a warm vintage that was one of the best in what would otherwise have been a fairly ordinary decade, the 1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon is starting to take on a deep golden appearance, commencing to amber. It offers a gorgeous, suave texture and a very complex nose that's a touch oxidative but that adds a layer of additional intrigue: it's all nuts, raisins, walnuts, olives, warm pastry, cinnamon, cooked orange peel. It's round and sweet (95g/L) but not unctuous with richness on the mid-palate while retaining enough acidity to refresh the mouth on the long finish. A wine that is very comfortable in its own skin, providing a very relaxing experience.Inc. GSTSG$583.63 -

The 1994 Coteau du Layon offers an intriguing range of sweet tobacco, dried flowers, candied orange peel and earthy notes. Time in bottle has given the 1994 notable complexity, but it also retains a palpable sense of firmness that differentiates it from the lusher 1997 taste alongside it. Even though the 1994 has the depth and character of a 25 year-old Coteaux du Layon, it also has the sense of reserve that I find intriguing. It’s the sort of wine that demands the attention of the taster. The 1994 is a touch rustic, and yet immensely pleasing.Inc. GSTSG$446.33 -

Nineteen nighty six wasn't a legendary vintage unlike the season that would follow. The 1996 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon, a product of a fairly warm season, it is not overtly warm in its fruit profile with some lightly botrytised spice character, plus a rose-like scent, apricots and almonds. With just 76g/L of residual sugar it's not the sweetest interpretation, but its joy is its super smooth, refined texture. Medium length.Inc. GSTSG$643.62 -
Vinous (95)
Starting to take on a deep golden hue, the 1997 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon is a sensuous sweet wine (92g/L of residual sugar) that offers ripe and concentrated flavors of apricot jam, cooked oranges botrytis-derived spices (60% of the fruit was affected by botrytis, a high proportion for this wine). It is intense, rich and honeyed, coating the palate with its sucrosity. There's just enough acidity here to keep things going but it does not have the vivacious refreshment of cooler years, providing a weightier, fully charged expression. The finish is lengthy and fragrant.Inc. GSTSG$546.57 -
Vinous (94)
The 1998 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon was made in a "classic year" with around 20% botrytis. There's rich apricot, baked apple, dried fruit and ground almond aromas. While it's sweet and caresses the focused mid-palate there's no heaviness and it finishes clean with a lovely burst of freshness; the scent of dried apricot fills the mouth. Drinking beautifully now but this can go on and on, based on Moulin Touchais's history for age-worthy wines.Inc. GSTSG$582.50 -

The yellow-golden 2014 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, a world famous and iconic Chenin with its own appellation (Savennières – Coulée de Serrant AC), opens with a beautifully clear, precise and aromatic bouquet of ripe and dried, lovely concentrated stone and grapefruit, as well as some honey aromas intermixed with crushed crystalline stones and herbal flavors. Highly elegant, clear and vital on the palate, this full-bodied wine is immensely intense but also silky, transparent and finesse-full. The long and stimulating finish is enormously piquant and salty, very compact but in perfect balance. There are dried Mediterranean herbs like thyme along with concentrated apricot and quince flavors in the persistent aftertaste. A great, elegant and very refined Coulée.Inc. GSTSG$995.00 -

A profound, challenging wine. Deep aromas and flavors of pear, quince, baked grapefruit, spice, touch of smoked honey and even tobacco. Grapes grown in the steep, south-east-facing vineyard of 'La Grande Côte' are hand-harvested at full ripeness to extract the most nuanced flavours. The wine is then fermented in large, old barrels, which adds vast depth and richness. Expect a complex palate with notes of white flowers, grapefruit and a whisper of minerality. With its vibrant acidity balanced by a touch of luscious sweetness, this is truly a world-class refreshing wine.
As a limited-production wine, with only a handful of cases made each year, Pascal Cotat Sancerre La Grande Cote 2022 is indeed a precious find for the discerning wine enthusiast.
