France - All White Wines
France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.
In Burgundy, the appellations of Chablis, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.
Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.
In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.
Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

Vinous (92)
Bright yellow with a green tinge. Aromas of nectarine, white pepper and spices are lifted by a hint of lavender. Brisk, energetic wine with noteworthy definition and delicacy to its complex flavors of citrus fruits and crushed-stone minerality. Very fresh for 2016, showing no dried-fruit character. This infant still needs time to knit but should evolve gracefully. Finishes very long and scented.Inc. GSTSG$3,050.69 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru matures in just over 20% new oak, has an attractive bouquet, a little more complex than the Chalumaux with orange pith and Mirabelle aromas. The palate is well balanced with a slightly soft entry, but there is a fine line of acidity that tightens everything up, leading to a stony, malic finish that lingers in the mouth. Good potential here.Inc. GSTSG$2,717.33 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Let Folatières 1er Cru spent 12 months in barrel (228- and 600-liter) and at the time of tasting was in stainless steel. It has a stoic, almost aloof bouquet that does not want to come out to play. The palate is well balanced with pretty apricot and ginger-tinged citrus fruit, gaining weight toward the finish, which maintains the spicy edge all the way through. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$3,650.41 -
Burghound (93)
Outstanding An overtly spicy and ever-so-slightly riper aromas include a whisper of the exotic on the cool citrus, Asian-style tea with jasmine hints. The laser-like, intense and utterly delicious medium weight flavors also exude a borderline palpable minerality that adds a sense of lift to the bone-dry, youthfully austere and strikingly persistent finale. This is excellent and I particularly like the balance though note well that it's going to need at least a few years of keeping before it will be reasonably approachable.Inc. GSTSG$3,159.69 -

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (93-96)
Bright yellow-gold. Enticing aromas of mango, guava, yellow peach, saffron, minerals and honey, complicated by high-toned botrytis. Rich, dense and almost oily, with intense ripe yellow fruit and honey flavors lifted by firm acidity. The finish boasts outstanding length and a bright lemony touch.Inc. GSTSG$877.36 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93)
Limpid gold in color, the 2001 Doisy-Védrines offers beeswax, honeysuckle and quince jelly on the nose; hints of gingerbread emerge with time. The oak comes through a bit here, which is odd after two decades. The palate is vibrant and tensile on the entry, delivering the weight one expects from this Barsac, allied with a fine bead of acidity that imparts tension. Tangy marmalade and quince notes appear toward the finish. This is a fine Doisy-Védrines that is à point.Inc. GSTSG$1,235.84 -
Burghound (94)
There is a hint of exoticism to the cool and admirably pure citrus, pear and green apple suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of reduction. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well-balanced effort is still very much on the way up and will need another 5 to 7 years before it reaches its full apogee. Tasted twice recently with consistent notes.Inc. GSTSG$7,801.04 -

Gold-tinged yellow. Rather exaggerated aromas of hazelnut and almond. Fat yellow fruit flavors are supported by decent acidity but could use more definition. Finishes a bit dry-edged, with hints of nutmeats and oatmeal. Not a great showing, and likely to evolve quickly.
