France - All White Wines

France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.

In Burgundy, the appellations of ChablisMeursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.

Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

    Wine Advocate (98)

A warm to hot vintage ideal for producing outstanding reds does not necessarily make for a great Sauternes vintage, but in the case of 1990 it did. Dry, warm winds in the autumn contributed to the level of concentration that this wine exhibits. Fortunately, a little rain in late September and early October ensured that botrytis flourished well in the end, the final factor necessary to achieve this extraordinary expression.

  • D'Yquem 2007 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98+)

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2007 d'Yquem delivers powerful scents of tropical fruits—dried mangoes and pineapple paste—accented by acacia honey, toasted almonds and woodsmoke with hints of chalk dust, kettle corn and lime blossom. The palate reveals one of those vintages that shape-shifts into an apparently drier style than it is, largely thanks to its uber-racy backbone of freshness and layered mineral-inspired flavors, finishing with a regal, satin-textured savoriness. Difficult to resist now, this will be one of those Rip Van Winkle vintages that can be predicted to cellar not just for decades but for generations. For number crunchers: 14.2% alcohol, 137 grams per liter residual sugar, and total acidity is 3.7 grams per liter H2SO4.

Full-bodied and full-on hedonic in the mouth, the rich, tightly wound layers are still amazingly youthful with bags of citrus sparks and an incredibly long, perfumed finish. Possessing a residual sugar of 157 grams per liter and 13.6% alcohol as well as a laser-focused line of freshness, the rock-solid structure and through-the-roof opulence here is simply mind blowing. The 2013 De Fieuzal Blanc has quite a candied nose with hints of brown sugar lurking behind that veneer of tropical fruit. For Fieuzal I find this refreshingly vivacious in style. That comes through on the palate with nectarine and peach skin, a keen line of acidity with a slightly overworked finish that is more phenolic than its peers. The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. (Winemaker Brian Sieve explained that this has as much to do with the cellar in Meursault vis-à-vis Puligny as with winemaking decisions.) The palate is well balanced with a rounded entry, smooth and harmonious, offering tropical tones of apricot and nectarine. As with the Porusots, I would have liked more mineralité and tension on the finish, though there is satisfying length.

  • De Montille Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2021 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comprises just one-third as much fruit as in 2022 and demanded twice as many treatments. It is just missing a bit of presence on the nose, with hints of white flowers and honeysuckle. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, orange pith and hints of white peach and touches of white tea towards a very elegant finish. Hopefully, the aromatics will awaken by the time of bottling.

  • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

(25% new oak): Bright yellow. A touch of reduction but still a captivating fruitiness to the aromas and flavors of lemon, lime and crushed stone. Rich, savory, concentrated wine with a restrained sweetness and enlivening underlying minerality. More tactile, pliant and deep than the Poruzots. This silky, edge-free wine finishes classically dry and long, with lovely lemony lift and grip.

  • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. (Winemaker Brian Sieve explained that this has as much to do with the cellar in Meursault vis-à-vis Puligny as with winemaking decisions.) The palate is well balanced with a rounded entry, smooth and harmonious, offering tropical tones of apricot and nectarine. As with the Porusots, I would have liked more mineralité and tension on the finish, though there is satisfying length.

  • De Montille Meursault Saint Christophe 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

(winemaker Brian Sieve used a bit less young oak for this wine in 2016 than in '17): Medium yellow. Nectarine and smoky oak on the fresh nose, plus a hint of hazelnut. Rich, silky, showy wine with subtle sweetness to its peach and apricot fruit. A soft, classic Meursault with good material and thickness as well as sound acidity and definition.

  • De Montille Meursault Saint Christophe 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Meursault St. Christophe is a blend of Les Petits Charrons, Narvaux and Les Tastet. It has a precise and quite attractive bouquet, the 20% new oak (half in large 600-litre barrels) is nicely integrated and imparts subtle brioche aromas. The palate is well balanced with a touch of orange cordial on the entry. There is a fine bead of acidity here with a lightly spiced finish, just a tang of lemongrass enlivening the aftertaste. Very fine at this level.

  • De Montille Meursault Saint Christophe 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

Sourced from Les Petit Charrons and Les Castet, the 2019 Meursault "St. Christophe" has a tightly wound bouquet that lacks flair compared to some of the other Meursaults from de Montille. The palate is well balanced and more expressive, offering tangerine and light grapefruit notes and a touch of ginger toward the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will find their voice by the time of bottling.

  • De Montille Meursault Saint Christophe 2021 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

A blend of Petit Charrons and Les Castets, the 2021 Meursault "St. Christophe" sports a clever reduction on the nose. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity; it's taut, fresh and saline, with an elegant and pure finish. This is well worth looking out for.

    Vinous (92)

Bright yellow with a green tinge. Aromas of nectarine, white pepper and spices are lifted by a hint of lavender. Brisk, energetic wine with noteworthy definition and delicacy to its complex flavors of citrus fruits and crushed-stone minerality. Very fresh for 2016, showing no dried-fruit character. This infant still needs time to knit but should evolve gracefully. Finishes very long and scented.

  • De Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru matures in just over 20% new oak, has an attractive bouquet, a little more complex than the Chalumaux with orange pith and Mirabelle aromas. The palate is well balanced with a slightly soft entry, but there is a fine line of acidity that tightens everything up, leading to a stony, malic finish that lingers in the mouth. Good potential here.

  • De Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2021 (12x75cl)

    Burghound (93)

Outstanding An overtly spicy and ever-so-slightly riper aromas include a whisper of the exotic on the cool citrus, Asian-style tea with jasmine hints. The laser-like, intense and utterly delicious medium weight flavors also exude a borderline palpable minerality that adds a sense of lift to the bone-dry, youthfully austere and strikingly persistent finale. This is excellent and I particularly like the balance though note well that it's going to need at least a few years of keeping before it will be reasonably approachable.
