France - All White Wines
France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.
In Burgundy, the appellations of Chablis, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.
Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.
In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.
Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

There is just one barrel of 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year (normally there is one and a half). It has an intense bouquet, though it doesn't quite have the panache of the Bâtard-Montrachet, a hint of menthol emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a dab of stem ginger on the entry, fine depth, powerful and concentrated with an intense finish.Inc. GSTSG$3,725.42 -

Easily one of the greatest Condrieu I’ve ever tasted is the 2015 Condrieu La Doriane. A wine that needs to be tasted to be believed, it possesses a huge nose of toasted brioche, liquid rocks, apricot, flower oil and salty minerality. Unctuous, full-bodied, massively rich, yet also elegant and graceful, with beautiful freshness, enjoy this tour de force over the coming 5-6 years.Inc. GSTSG$570.80 -

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)
Musky, complex nose melds lime, pineapple, coconut and smoke. Fat, dense and concentrated; more glyceral and chewy than the 2000 Laville. Finishes long and deep, with a rich, honeyed quality.Inc. GSTSG$2,542.77 -

The 2013 Haut Brion Blanc, which is a blend of 66% Sauvignon Blanc and 34% Semillon, has a more expressive bouquet than the 2013 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, with mineral-rich citrus fruit, grapefruit and honeysuckle - all very vivacious. The palate is very well balanced, intense and exuberant with lanolin-tinged citrus fruit, dried pineapple, almond, sweet fig and a dash of lemongrass on the long finish. This is just a superb Haut Brion Blanc that should give two or three decades of pleasure.Inc. GSTSG$2,428.32 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets has turned out brilliantly, revealing an incipiently complex bouquet featuring scents of white flowers, Anjou pear, fresh peach, fresh pastry and flinty reduction. Medium to full-bodied, deep and satiny, it's a lively, concentrated wine with lovely mid-palate amplitude and a lively, saline finish. Inherently more open and immediate than the superb 2017 rendition, it will nevertheless merit and reward some bottle age.Inc. GSTSG$3,376.62 -

The 2019 Saint-Aubin En L’Ébaupin, which comes from a steep slope that tends to become very cool at night, has a well defined, crushed stone and white flower scented bouquet. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening, good weight with seductive almond and yellow plum notes surfacing on the finish. Long and spicy, stem ginger aftertaste here - excellent. This is one of Sébastien Caillat’s favourite wines at this early stage.Inc. GSTSG$2,359.63 -

A marvelously intense wine, the Chardonnay singing with light toast and acidity. The wine has layers of green apple, spice, a tight texture and orange zest highlights. Age for at least seven years.Inc. GSTSG$3,392.97 -
Vinous (94)
The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is cut from a similar cloth to the Les Pucelles on the nose: reserved, mineral-driven with hints of orange blossom emerging with time, later more Granny Smith apples. The palate is strict and precise, demonstrating impressive weight, especially towards the back end. Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30Inc. GSTSG$3,704.34 -

A ripe swath of lime, persimmon, butterscotch and spice notes mark this lush white. It's immediate, with a bright structure, yet remains extremely long and persistent. The finish is its best feature now. Drink now through 2018. 190 cases imported. -BSInc. GSTSG$2,277.16 -

5-Star Wine Just bottled at the end of April. Made from the usual six plots. A pale lemon yellow. The nose has been knocked back a bit and is not yet showing much fruit. Then a little white fruit starts to emerge with some graphite, and a little bit of gunflint. Racy yet ripe with several layers of flavour and excellent length, the acidity perfectly wound in. On the assumption that the bouquet comes back as it should a little later on, after getting over the bottling, this will surely be a 5 star wineInc. GSTSG$1,036.76 -

The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne impresses for its energy and crystalline purity. The 2019 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru has a slightly richer bouquet compared to Bouzereau’s other cuvées, presenting dried honey and orange pith scents plus honeysuckle and beeswax. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Harmonious and full of energy. The vibrant citrus/lime finish fans out wonderfully and the spicy aftertaste is one of the longest I have found on this particular cuvée. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$824.91 -

The 2019 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a tight, focused nose of gunflint and gravel, expressing this noble vineyard extremely well in the sense that it could not be from anywhere else. The palate is well balanced with touches of orange peel, ginger and light savory notes on the entry. Quite a phenolically driven Perrières, it has wonderful length, even if it does not quite have the clinical precision of, say, Dominique Lafon’s own Perrières. Still, this is a well-crafted, quite sublime Meursault.Inc. GSTSG$744.13 -

The 2018 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru Blanc has a fragrant bouquet of orange blossom, tangerine and light petrolly aromas that lend an almost Riesling-like allure.
