Sourced from vines planted in 1899 and 1965, Kaesler's 2015 The Bogan Shiraz aged 15 months in 25% new oak. It's a full-bodied but balanced Shiraz, with big blueberry and blackberry flavors but also savory hints of wood, grilled meat and dried spices. Plush and almost creamy on the palate, it moves easily into a long, velvety finish that picks up hints of plum and licorice. Flattering now, it should still be going strong in a decade or more.

The 2020 RWT Shiraz Bin 798 is a powerhouse of bloody fruit and firm tannin. It veritably explodes from the blocks, showing plum skin, raspberry leaf, blackberry, mulberry, lashings of salted licorice and rendered lamb fat. I am coming to love (in a big and serious way) the Barossa Shiraz' bottlings from 2020—the year was significantly down in yields, warm and dry, and responsible for wines of muscle, density and gravitas. So, too, for this wine. Excellent.

Peter Gago explained that on 20th December, the temperature peaked at 45.6C, yet these vines dealt perfectly with this extreme challenge. In fact, I think it emboldened these vines, giving them a serious depth of flavour and darkness that opens onto a phenomenal array of black fruit and density, and it is packed with awesome power, and yet it is so refreshing and lifted on the finish it defies belief! Compact yet massive, overwhelmingly grand and delicately perfumed, this is an incredible RWT with a very long life ahead of it. This is an unmissable wine for serious collectors in this release.

Excellent.

Matthew Jukes (19.5+)

Vinous (96)

This 2022 Shiraz RWT Bin 798 from Barossa Valley has decadent levels of flavors, wound up in a deep pool of muscular tannins that promise a very long life. Bold and expressive, it almost fills the room with tarry, meaty, bloody aromas and a powerful undertow of French oak. A tighter palate follows, with blackberry and blueberry flavors building slowly through a rich, full-flavored finish. Far from ready to drink now, but will reward the (very) patient.

The Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 2008 is a riveting fusion of intense flavours and elegance, showcasing the enduring prowess of the Australian Barossa Valley vineyards. Produced by respected wine artisan, Peter Lehmann, this label hails from vineyards over 30 years old, embodying the rich heritage and quality of the region. The wine's creation method foregrounds traditional wine-making principles - handpicked, meticulously destemmed and crushed, followed by open fermentation and maturation in new French oak hogsheads. Deeply garnet in colour, it unfurls an opulent bouquet of dark chocolate, liquorice, and ripe blackberries, graduating into a long, velvety finish. The Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 2008 offers an outstanding exemplification of premium Barossa Shiraz, with its multi-layered complexities and remarkable ageing potential. A truly exquisite wine, awaiting the discernment of the contemporary connoisseur.
