2019 |
Alkina Polygon No. 1 Shiraz 2019 (3x75cl) Decanter (98)Delicate yet formidable, this wine’s dense, multiple layers of complex texture and flavour speak eloquently. There’s fresh raspberry and graphite, rhubarb and red earth, dark plum and ironstone, and a suggestion of sage and nutmeg among blackberry bite, caressed by fine tannins. Sourced from only 200 vines planted in the 1950s, this 0.27ha micro-terroir boasts red-brown earth over limestone with traces of iron, providing fruit of rare depth and concentration. More sensuous and ethereal that its raw-boned sibling Alkina Polygon 5, but their common characteristic is extraordinary length of the purest flavours.

Alkina Polygon No. 3 Grenache 2018 (1x150cl) The World of Fine Wine (98)Red and purples. There is a complex yet glorious aroma to this wine. Blueberries, spices, chocolate. Wonderfully fragrant. the texture is compellingly supple. Finely balanced and with a pleasing flick of vibrant acidity. Cherries emerge on the palate and a tobacco-leaf/cigar-box note (reminiscent of a fine Cohiba Siglo VI). Chalky the tannins might be, but they quickly dissolve into something wonderfully cushiony and gentle. Elegance personified. A superb Grenache.

Alkina Polygon No. 5 Grenache 2018 (1x150cl) The World of Fine Wine (97)Even darker in colour than No. 3, and the aroma here is a little more closed at even this early stage, not quite as alluring. Warm earth, chocolate, black fruits, a hint of woodsmoke. This is more burly, more concentrated. Excellent complexity. The tannins here are not as cashmere-like - more chalky and firmer, more mouth-coating; perhaps more what one expects from Grenache. Fuller in flavor, great structure, bright acidity, and a very long finish. Another superb wine and again, a great future. Indeed, this would seem to have an even longer-focus than No. 3.

2016 |
Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Noir McCrone 2016 (6x75cl) The Real Review (96)Line-priced with the Home Block Pinot Noir, this is a slightly more robust style thanks, perhaps, to more clay-rich soils. It's an elegant pinot noir with cherry, spice, anise, floral, violet, cigar box and fine, stemmy tannins. A little closed at this stage but with the potential to develop well with bottle age.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2010 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2010 Pinot Noir's nose is just a little closed giving mulberry and black cherry hints with accents of garrique, violets, mossy bark and some clove hints. Medium bodied, it has great structure with medium to firm fine grained tannins and good but not over-whelming acid freshness complimenting the black and red fruit flavors, finishing with some mineral notes.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2012 (12x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17.5)Coolest season for a long time. But a settled autumn. Mid cherry red. Compact with a real sense of depth and much more to come. Has the classic Ata Rangi smoky/savoury aroma along with the still-fresh fruit and more spice here. Juicy and rich-fruited on the palate and mouth-watering on the long finish. Stony/mineral aftertaste.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2013 (12x75cl) James Suckling (98-99)A significant pinot noir that displays immense quality, depth and completeness tasted ahead of bottling. Very complex indeed with exotic spices, meaty charcuterie and game meats. A fabulous array of different cherry fruit characters, hints of citrus zest and saffron plus some foresty bracken to add. The palate has immense energy and depth yet treads lightly on balanced structure and even shape, the tannins wind out and around supple flesh, gathering together and fanning at the finish, the acidity is bright throughout and the finish holds long. A masterpiece. Commanding and seductive pinot noir at its finest.

2014 |
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2014 (12x75cl) Raymond Chan (100)Full, even, black-hued ruby-red with youthful purple tints. The nose is very full with softly concentrated and layered aromas of rich, ripe, dark red berries and cherries along with nuances of dark red plums entwined with fragrant violet florals, fresh herb and spicy detail. The aromatics blossom to reveal notes of raspberry liqueur, earth and minerals. This exudes richness allied to elegance and finesse. Medium-full bodied, vibrantly succulent and lusciously sweet fruit flavours of dark red berry and cherry fruit are harmoniously melded with flavours of ripe dark plums and fragrant violet florals, dark herbs, spices and red licorice. The flavours are seamlessly mouthfilling and supported by refined, flowery tannin extraction, and enlivened by poised acidity. This has drive, energy and fine linearity, and the wine carries to a very long and sustained, rich finish of spiced cherries and raspberry liqueur. This is a beautifully rich and succulent, elegantly balanced and refined Pinot Noir with seamless-flowing, ripe flavours of dark berry and cherry fruit with complexing floral and herbal detail. Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from the oldest parcels, 40% Abel clone with the remainder clones 5, Dijon and 10/5, indigenous yeast fermented with 25% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 20-26 days on skins and aged 11 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2015 (12x75cl) Bob Campbell (99)Very seductive pinot noir combining a sensual, silken texture with layers of complex fruit and savoury flavours. The wine has structure but it is deeply buried within a core of sweet fruit. Dark-fleshed plum, violet, cherry, spice and very subtle fresh herbs are among the more obvious flavours in this supremely complex wine. Outstanding!

2018 |
Ata Rangi Raranga Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (12x75cl) Vinous (89)This is Sauvignon Blanc made in a host of ways, hence the name Raranga, which means “woven” in Māori. There were parcels fermented in tank and in barrels, while a small proportion was fermented on skins, and a splash was whole-bunch fermented. After a couple of years, this is starting to shed its primary fruit and taking on characters of lanolin and oatmeal alongside citrus, pear and lemon tart. It has good depth and concentration and offers some interest texturally. The finish is clean and zesty although a little brief.

Babich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (84)The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough) is lightly spritzy with moderately concentrated aromas reminiscent of passionfruit, sweat (but no blood or tears), citrus and a lightly reductive note. This is a dry, clean and crisp example; its light body is given a touch of flesh through the midpalate. Classic stuff for drinking young.

2004 |
Balnaves The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18++)Donated by Pete Bissell, Blanaves' winemaker. 2004 was a waypoint in Coonawarra's history. Many good wines made. Developments in precision viticulture: each block managed according to soil profile, clonal selection and trellis system. The Tally is produced from the best parcels of the 120-acre vineyard, and not produced every year. The vines are mostly machine pruned and harvested. Fermented in vinimatics and open-topped static fermenters. Maturation 18-22 months in fine-grained new and used French oak barriques and hogsheads. Before swirling it has a peppery and yeast extract note, though the fruit starts to emerge with aeration. Much more intense and crisp cassis on the palate. Dense but fine tannins, pretty fresh acidity and a tight, dry leafy finish. Powerful and tightly furled, hence the plus.

Ben Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz 2004 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)(from vines reportedly between 85 and 115 years of age) Inky ruby. Spicy blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, with complicating notes of espresso and dried violet. Cool and restrained, with a suave, silky tone to the dark fruit flavors and gentle acids bringing freshness and energy. Nothing overdone here. There's impressive clarity and length to the blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Really gorgeous.
