This is so richly-fruited and plush in texture, and its abundance of flavor registers as such an extract-rich infusion, that the contrast with the sense of transparency and vibrancy projected by the corresponding Abtserde could scarcely be more dramatic. Yet even so, this G-Max comes off as anything but weighty. Peaty smokiness; musky floral essences; crushed chalk; peach kernel and cherry pit piquancy, all impinge distinctively amid an otherwise seamlessly dense ocean of flavor whose finish both engulfs and buoys you. Eleven days (!) after having been opened for my initial tasting, contents of this same bottle of G-max were still full of vibratory energy. I imagine at least a 15 year run of glory for this remarkable Riesling. |

This is razor-sharp on the Zen-like nose of Granny Smith apples, struck flint notes and citrus peel; you could almost describe it as uncompromising. The palate has a citric spine and tastes quite saline, with hints of orange peel. Harmonious, penetrating and ethereal, this is a brilliant Riesling from Keller, but one that you have to meet on its own terms. |

Wine Advocate (96)Smoky, pungent, and animal evocations of peat, sweat, and musk oil mingle with scents of peach, Rainier cherry, and grapefruit on the nose of Keller’s 2009 Riesling G-Max, then saturate the palate in an enveloping manner impressively unlike that of the other dry Rieslings in his present collection. This is so richly-fruited and plush in texture, and its abundance of flavor registers as such an extract-rich infusion, that the contrast with the sense of transparency and vibrancy projected by the corresponding Abtserde could scarcely be more dramatic. Yet even so, this G-Max comes off as anything but weighty. Peaty smokiness; musky floral essences; crushed chalk; peach kernel and cherry pit piquancy, all impinge distinctively amid an otherwise seamlessly dense ocean of flavor whose finish both engulfs and buoys you. Eleven days (!) after having been opened for my initial tasting, contents of this same bottle of G-max were still full of vibratory energy. I imagine at least a 15 year run of glory for this remarkable Riesling. |

Vinous (96)Riding shotgun, the 2011 Westhofener Brunnenhauschen Abtserde Riesling Grosses Gewachs is a completely different wine. This is razor-sharp on the Zen-like nose of Granny Smith apples, struck flint notes and citrus peel; you could almost describe it as uncompromising. The palate has a citric spine and tastes quite saline, with hints of orange peel. Harmonious, penetrating and ethereal, this is a brilliant Riesling from Keller, but one that you have to meet on its own terms. |

Wine Advocate (91)Lime, apple, and grapefruit with a strong influence of their skins and pips renders Keller's 2011 Westhofener Morstein Riesling Grosses Gewachs a remarkably pithy and piquant mouthful. Density and sheer persistence this also has in spades - it's almost muscle-bound - but I'll be very interested to see whether it picks up refinement, differentiation and, for want of a better word (one Keller himself favors), elegance over the course of coming decade. There is an austerely stony undertone to this entire performance; and one that didn't dissipate in a bottle that had been opened for a day. (Incidentally, this is the first vintage of Morstein to be supplemented by a portion of sixty-year-old vines that Keller recently acquired and grafted over to Riesling.) |

Wine Advocate (99)The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Auslese *** (Green Capsule) is very clear and openly fruity on the concentrated and aromatic nose, with ripe and spicy stone fruit and lychee as well as spicy aromas with coolish notes of crushed gray slate and flowers. This is another 2018 that reminds me of the world's finest Gewürztraminers due to the flavors, richness, mild acidity and perfect mix of tropical fruit aromas, mineral spiciness and very fine tannins. The wine is sweet rather than medium-sweet, but its crystalline and elegant acidity and aromatic intensity make this a spectacularly great 2018 with greatly deposed power. The wine already tastes dangerously good today, but it will develop at least as gorgeous as the 2003s. This could end up as a giant one day. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

Vinous (95)This dry-tasting three-star Auslese reflects some of Molitor’s lowest yields from a harvest of already meager volume. Pungent scents of wood smoke, grapefruit peel and quarry dust set the tone for a zesty, piquant, expansive palate that reflects both high dry extract and 12.5 percent alcohol in its sense of mouth-filling mass. Abundant juiciness of fresh grapefruit and white peach linger into a bright, bittersweetly nutty finish of vibratory intensity. As this opens to the air, it keeps getting more expressively complex and gripping: one more piece of evidence that in 2014, Zeltinger Schlossberg was capable of upstaging Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. |
