In Bond: SG$415.00
|
2017 |
A. A. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2017 (6x75cl) Decanter (95)An utterly delicious Cinsault from Swartland pioneer and champion of the Cinsault revival in South Africa, Andre Adrian (Adi) Badenhorst. The Ramnasgras comes from a small vineyard on the estate, planted in the mid 50’s, and is the product of meticulous hand selection, fermentation in ‘dodgy old wooden vats’ and maturation in ‘less dodgy foudre for 12 months’. Such is Adi’s way, the wine is made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and is a true reflection of the vintage conditions and Swartland terroir. This is full of red berries and perfumed floral notes with a mineral edge. A small production of 3,500 bottles, so worth seeking out and stocking-up if you can.

2016 |
A. Christmann Konigsbach Olberg Riesling Erste Lage 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)This seems to live up to its name on the nose, with a whiff of oiliness that, when combined with crushed stone and pungent lime zest, puts me very much in mind of Chablis (which isn’t something I say often of a German Riesling, but has frequently applied to this site). Satisfyingly earthy scents and flavors of raw pumpkin (or winter squashes generally) serve as a nice foil for the zesty, bright citricity on a polished palate. The finish here really grips, featuring a stony, chalky undertone and a mouthwatering mingling of marine salinity.

2021 |
Alheit Fire By Night Chenin Blanc 2021 (6x75cl) Tim Atkin MW (98)Chris Alheit's recently acquired Nuwedam farm on the Paardeberg is the source of this world-class Chenin Blanc, which shows his determination to "zero out the winemaking" and focus on site. White flower and roof thatch aromas segue into a taut, focused, stony, effortlessly concentrated palate with layers of fennel, oatmeal and green apple.

2015 |
Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2015 Cartology is developing a succinct, quite gorgeous bouquet with jasmine, sea spray and a hint of linseed. There is real complexity within this Cartology, very focused and taut. The palate is vivid and bright, conveying real energy and poise with wonderful salinity towards the finish, touches of hazelnut and Chinese 5-spice on the aftertaste. This is a scintillating, quite cerebral Cartology that is going to give a lot of pleasure. Tasted at the Alheit seminar with Chris Alheit in London.

2018 |
Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Cartology, a blend of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Sémillon this year, is whole-cluster-pressed with no SO2 addition, and matured in used oak. It has a well defined, pure bouquet of dried honey, yellow flower, honeysuckle and lanolin aromas that instantly seduce the senses. The palate is beautifully balanced with a slightly oily-textured opening, the intensity deftly counterbalanced by the fine bead of acidity, and a discreet spiciness toward the finish. This is very harmonious and persistent, an effortless Cartology that should age with style. Superb.

2019 |
Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2019 (6x75cl) Tim Atkin MW (95)Since its first, headline-grabbing release in 2011, Cartology has become a key wine in the history of the new South Africa. Blended across the Western Cape, it's an assemblage of Chenin Blanc with 10% Semillon that’s herbal, textured and sappy with notes of oatmeal, citrus and pear, pithy acidity, subtle oak and a spicy twist. Arguably the best release since 2011. 2021-27

2017 |
Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)From vines planted in 2010, the 2017 Hemelrand Vine Garden was matured in old neutral barrels and cement egg. It has a clean, pure bouquet of lemon curd, albumen and light yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced, with a taut line of acidity, and quite saline in the mouth. The sharp, slightly flinty finish oddly reminds me of a mature Chablis. Very fine.

Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Hemelrand Vine Garden is whole-cluster-pressed and matured in oak and foudres. It has a very seductive bouquet of honeysuckle, passion fruit and hints of beeswax that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a saline opening, plus a fine bead of acidity. There is a light saline lick toward the finish that becomes nuttier with aeration, although this does not quite deliver the complexity of Alheit’s best Chenin Blancs. Still, it is a lovely white blend that should age with style.

2019 |
Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2019 Hemelrand Vine Garden was picked early in the morning and fermented over two months (nine for the Roussanne). It has a very well-defined bouquet of red apple, fresh pear, yellow flower and strawberry scents, plus hints of chamomile in the background. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and wonderful _mineralité_ on the finish; there’s something Alsace-like about this cuvée. One of Alheit’s more cerebral wines of the vintage.

2019 |
Alheit Vineyards Lost & Found 2019 (3x37.5cl) Vinous (96)The maiden (and alas, final) 2019 Lost & Found is Chris Alheit’s foray into sweet wines made entirely from Hanepoot, the local name for Muscat d’Alexandria, from a single vineyard in Breedekloof. Burnished amber in color, it has a captivating bouquet of marmalade, quince and mango notes, all very pure and beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced and viscous in texture, offering marmalade and quince on the entry. It actually reminds me of a Tokay Eszencia, but it is all kept amazingly fresh thanks to the razor-sharp acidity. A spellbinding sweet debut for Chris Alheit, but then again, I didn’t expect anything less. Grab this one-off while you can.

1997 |
Allt-a-Bhainne (Stiùbhart Single Cask) Speyside Single Malt 24YO 1997 (1x70cl) From a deeply underrated distillery, this Allt-a-Bhainne bottled by the Stewart Whisky Company under their Stiùbhart Single Cask label is a glorious example of what happens when a cask is simply allowed to mature as it should. A natural cask strength of just 44.9% after 24 years makes it clear that this was maturing at an accelerated rate, losing a lot of alcohol and water but the phenolic oils that remain have led to an extremely concentrated whisky; a masterclass in bourbon-wood maturation.
Appearance: Showing a brilliant old-brass colour courtesy of the bourbon wood and that unique concentration through the ageing process.
Nose: this whisky jumps out of the glass with notes almost reminiscent of a great White Burgundy. Crushed river stones and struck flint alongside golden delicious apple and herbes de provence come across on the nose.
Palate: The palate is gentle as one would expect from the lower ABV but it is oily and viscous with a sensation of scented candle followed by sea salt, delicate earthy peat and a return of that golden delicious apple note.
Finish: Extremely long and gentle with the initial notes of crushed stones mingling with sea salt and stewed orchard fruit.

Anwilka 2015 (6x75cl) James Suckling (95)This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate's full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot. Best in 2020.

Anwilka 2017 (3x150cl) Greg Sherwood MW (96)A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot which was aged for 19 months in French oak, 50% new 400 litre barrels and 50% second fill. A seductively perfumed vintage, the aromatics show alluring notes of violets, potpourri and hits of lily over dark bramble berry fruits with hints of mocha espresso notes that combine with subtle buttered brown toast nuances. The palate shows fabulous elegance and finesse with a soft touch concentration of black currant, Christmas pudding, savoury plum compote and black cherry. The tannins are powdery and fine grained but also structured and drying, combining well with a fresh glossy acidity that keeps the finish focused, vibrant and bright. An impressive wine that not only shows off another great vintage in the Cape but also what is increasingly possible with the superb Anwilka Stellenbosch terroir.

2013 |
Ao Yun 2013 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)This 2013 Ao Yun is a new star of China! The vineyard is backed by LVMH in Shangri-La, at the edge of the Himalayas. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates this wine with 90%, the other 10% is Cabernet Franc. 2013 is the first vintage. It is opaque, with a very deep ruby color. Elegant and restrained in style, it reveals scents of bell pepper, blackcurrant, prune and blackberry with subtle hints of dark chocolate, clove, tobacco and licorice. Refreshing on the palate, full-bodied and with very silky tannins, it has great concentration, perfect structure and a very long finish. Tasting date: May 17, 2017. Alcohol level: 15%.

A lovely dark fruit undertone. Minerally and very fine. Made of cabernet sauvignon with a touch of cabernet franc. This is 28 hectares in total. The vines have 10 years. It’s all handmade. Beautiful structure and depth. This is a wine that really impresses with all the finesse and quality of tannins. Goes on for minutes. Better in 2020 but so fine now.

Ao Yun 2018 (6x75cl) James Suckling (98) I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.
