Italy, known as the "Land of Wine," is celebrated for its exquisite range of fine wines. With a winemaking history dating back thousands of years and a diverse array of terroirs, Italy offers a remarkable collection of wines that delight the senses and captivate wine enthusiasts worldwide.

In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. Wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans like Sassicaia and Tignanello showcase the region's mastery in crafting complex, age-worthy, and expressive wines. Piedmont is home to legendary vineyards like GajaVietti, and Marchesi di Barolo. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Experience the allure of Italian wines and immerse yourself in the rich history, diverse terroirs, and passionate winemaking that define the Italian wine scene. Whether you're sipping a prestigious Barolo, a refined Brunello di Montalcino, a refreshing Prosecco, or a bold Nero d'Avola, Italian wines promise a journey of flavors and a celebration of Italy's winemaking heritage.

The 2013 Barolo La Serra is superb. In fact, the 2013 is one of the most impressive young La Serras I have ever tasted from Roberto Voerzio because the tannins are much more polished than is typically the case here, where the high altitude of this site tends to produce sinewy, nervous Barolos. Today, the 2013 is brilliant and super-expressive, with remarkable precision and class. As always, the flavors are bright and floral, with a good underpinning of chalky, mineral-driven tones, with remarkable polish and class to burn. What a gorgeous wine this is.

The 2014 Barolo La Serra is bright, floral and energetic, with all of the sinewy tension that is typical of this site. I would cellar the 2014 for at least a few years to allow some of the angular contours to soften. There is a good deal of inner sweetness that will emerge in time. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried cherry all grace this expressive, savory Barolo from Roberto Voerzio.

Less expressive, firmer and more mineral. More salty and oceanic than the Brunate with a chalky texture. Athletic and nervy but good strength and line. Winter berries and black cherry stones with a herbal, leafy quality. This is Voerzio’s highest Barolo vineyard, situated in the commune of La Morra, at between 380 to 430 metres above sea level. Aged for two years in a mix of big and small barrels, light toast, French oak (15, 20, 30 and 35 HL sizes for the big barrels).

The 2014 Barolo Torriglione, tasted from magnum, is a very beautiful wine. The aromatics alone are exquisite. Dried flowers, mint, sweet red berry fruit, tobacco and licorice all grace this beguiling and expressive Barolo. All the elements come together so effortlessly. Slightly nervous tannins give the 2014 a real sense of vibrancy. It's a wonderful wine in a very challenging vintage. Available only in magnum.

Amazing aromas of flowers from lilacs and violets to raspberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet ultra-elegant. So much fruit that lasts for minutes on the palate. Tangy acidity. Truly a great wine. Better in 2019 but a joy to taste now.

The 2014 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is slightly (just a hair) more accessible at this very premature stage in its drinking life. The wine opens to broad and wide fruit flavors that include cassis, wild cherry and dried blueberry with savory tones of tar, licorice and tobacco. These elements are carefully stitched together within a tight and elaborate embroidery. The mouthfeel is silky and long, but there is also a very subtle element of softness that makes this wine taste smooth and rich on the palate.

Similar notes of mulled black cherries, menthol, toasted spices, tobacco, and licorice emerge from the 2015 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata. It has the ripe, sexy style of the vintage, medium to full-bodied richness, an elegant, seamless texture, and a great finish. There are plenty of tannins here, yet they're sweet and polished, and this beauty already offers pleasure. Nevertheless, it's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and should have three decades of overall longevity.

Enticing aromas of orange peel, mushrooms and plums with hints of stone and dark chocolate. This is a very tight wine with chewy, focused tannins that hit you just at the end. It’s tight and reserved now. Give it two or three years to start to open up. Try after 2023 and onwards.

The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a pleasant, easygoing Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. Lifted, perfumed Rocche aromatics meld into a core of crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice. The 2017 is a bit more nervy than most vintages, but the brisk tannins help convey a measure of freshness that is quite welcome in this vintage. The 2017 is a solid wine, but far from inspiring.

A striking wine, the 2004 Barolo Sarmassa, one of two Barolos Voerzio bottles only in magnums, provides a fascinating contrast to the much more virile, imposing Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate. Here the textures are silky, while the flavor profile is distinctly more floral. The Sarmassa is also typically a bit brighter, but the 2004 plays on darker tonalities of red fruit, with exotic spiced overtones and a bit more power than is the norm.

The 2016 Baffonero (100% Merlot) is a polished, elegant wine that also avoids some of the excesses of previous years. In 2016, Baffonero is perfumed and light on its feet. All it needs is a bit more persistence through to the finish. Perhaps that will develop with time in bottle. Today, the 2016 impresses for its balance and sense of poise. This is a very pretty Baffonero.

The 2018 Baffonero is a worthy follow up to the 2017. Whereas so many 2018s lean towards the more gracious end of the spectrum, Baffonero packs quite a punch, albeit in the slightly more restrained style of the year. Inky, exotically ripe dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and lavender all build as this exuberant, Maremma red shows off its undeniable allure. Baffonero, 100% Merlot, emerges from a 3.5 hectares planted in 1999, which have recently been supplanted by another hectare or so of vineyards. In 2018, a cool growing season without excessive heat, rare in this part of Tuscany, resulted in a long growing cycle. There was some rain early on, especially during flowering, but that, along with moderate temperatures, helped the vines from going into heat stress, which is always the risk on the Tuscan coast. Harvest for the Merlot was about ten days later than normal. The 2018 was vinified in cement, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aging was 18-20 months in French oak, about 80% new.

Decanter (93)

As high temperatures in mid-August shut down the ripening of Sangiovese, Marco Ricasoli reports picking approximately a week later than usual. He also introduced a sorting table to remove dried or green berries as well any pieces of stems. His resulting annata is pristine and sophisticated. Deep violet in colour and equally youthful on the nose, it exudes wild berries, black plum, and hints of wood spice. Tangy dark red cherry fills the mouth, buoyed by rambunctious acidity and framed by suede-textured tannins. Winter mint and liquorice root linger on the finish. With admirable complexity, this outperforms its category.
