Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2015 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly is excellent, offering up a pure and unadorned bouquet of crisp green apples, white flowers and crushed chalk that's classic Lamy. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, stony and saline, with bright, tangy acids and a pure, mineral finish. Right now, it's tight-knit and reserved, so several years' patience is advised.

The 2015 Santenay Clos des Hâtes, which is 50% de-stemmed, a massale selection from d'Angerville and Henri Boillot planted in 1999, has a well-defined bouquet with black berry and bilberry fruit, subtle undergrowth scents coming through with time. The palate is grainy in texture, quite masculine with blackberry fruit, a pleasant leafiness towards the tertiary finish that just needs to develop a little more aftertaste. Enjoy over 4-6 years.

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières includes a small proportion of whole bunch fruit. It has a harmonious bouquet with red cherries and pomegranate aromas. I appreciate the definition and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and crunchy red berry fruit, very natural in style, pure and tensile with a dash of spice on the finish. (from purchased fruit from the lieux-dits Les Drazey and Les Gamaires; Lignier does the vineyard work): Bright medium red. Urgent aromas of cranberry and fresh strawberry accented by crushed stone. Juicy, spicy and pure, conveying a touch of rocky minerality and good minty lift to its red berry flavors. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins. I might have identified this very firm village wine blind as a 2014.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière comes from purchased grapes, although Laurent Lignier controls the vineyard that is in its first year of conversion to biodynamie. It has a perfumed and floral bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit, tensile from the beginning with fine tannin and a pointed sorbet-fresh finish. This is very fine and may well eclipse the excellent 2014 la Perrière.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2015 Richebourg Grand Cru is a prodigious wine in the making, opening in the glass with a deep bouquet of black raspberry, cherry, licorice, orange rind, incense and strawberry, subtly framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, its flavors superbly concentrated and pure, its acids succulent and its tannins velvety and ample. More expansive than the Romanée Saint-Vivant, this Richebourg is also more backward and appears to possess the greater potential. When I first arrived at the domaine, I tended to prefer the Romanée Saint-Vivant, confided winemaker Charles Van Canneyt, but as my experience with the wines—old and young—grew, I have come to almost invariably favor the Richebourg.

  • Jacques Frederic Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet that displays a subtle marine, oyster shell tincture. It is more backward than Ghislaine-Barthod's own Fuées, but focused and clearly delineated. The palate is well-defined and grippy, displaying a fine bead of acidity and more tannic backbone than its peers. Perhaps there was a slightly longer extraction here, leading to a more muscular finish, yet the wine is still endowed with finesse and sophistication. You’re just going to have to wait longer for it. • Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

(18.5 hectoliters per hectare; destemmed): Good dark red. Less showy initially than the young-vines cuvée but ultimately far more complex, offering subtle scents of black raspberry, currant, graphite, smoke, soil and spices. Airy and elegant but at the same time very intensely flavored and subtly thick, with its dark berry, smoke and mineral flavors nicely framed by well-integrated acidity. The very long, slowly building finish features a copacetic combination of sweetness and ripe tannins. Made from 60-year-old vines, this wine is lower in octane and better balanced than the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru; winemaker Nadine Gublin noted that the clone the estate used to replant its Chambertin vines routinely gives more alcohol.

There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.

  • Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93+)

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.

  • Jayer Gilles Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Hauts Poirets 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)

Bright, dark ruby-red. Very pure, vibrant aromas of kirsch, blackberry, licorice and cocoa powder. Strongly mineral-driven on the palate but not aggressive, with concentrated dark fruit and saline flavors complemented but not overshadowed by the 100% oak. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely floral persistence. Gilles Jayer told me that this climat on thin soil over rock belongs entirely to him and to Domaine Machard de Gramont and really merits premier cru classification. My notes and scores on this cuvée over the past 15 to 20 years suggest that he's right.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

  • Jacques Frederic Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

Bright medium red. Aromas of red berries, red cherry, smoke and menthol are lifted by a mineral topnote. Rich, juicy and well-delineated, showing lovely freshness and reserve to its plum and saline mineral flavors. This energetic, seriously structured village wine may already be shutting down in the bottle.

  • Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony.

  • Jean et Sebastien Dauvissat Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2015 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is bright, precise and crystalline - in other words, a classic expression of this great grand cru. White flowers, crushed rocks, mint and slate all run through this super-expressive, nuanced Chablis from Dauvissat. Even in this warm, radiant vintage, the personality of Preuses comes through loud and clear - and that is perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay to this wine.

  • Jean Fournier Marsannay Rouge Le Chapitre 2015 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Bourgogne Chapitre Vieilles Vignes, which now includes a small parcel of younger vines, is one of the best generic red Burgundy wines that you can find. This does not disappoint. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with blackberry and raspberry aromas, real intensity, almost brooding in quality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite rounded redcurrant and cranberry notes on the entry, wonderful acidity and genuine weight and presence on the finish. Never underestimate the quality of this wine.

  • Jean Grivot Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a detailed, precise bouquet, very pure with ripe dark cherries, kirsch, orange sorbet and subtle graphite aromas. It is one of the classiest that you will come across from this ancient vineyard this year. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin that feel a little fuller and suppler than the premier cru Vosne-Romanées. Grippy in the mouth with an effervescent finish, this is a long-term Clos de Vougeot that will age effortlessly over 20-30 years.

  • Jean Grivot Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind, the 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru also put in a superb performance, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of dark wild berries, cola, orange rind, dried flowers and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and dramatic, with a broad attack, a deep and juicy core of fruit, satiny structuring tannins and a long, fragrant and already sapid finish. It's one of the finest renditions of Echézeaux to be found this year.

There is outstanding richness and volume to the seductively textured mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the firm, serious and ever-so-mildly rustic finale that is very Nuits in character.

As it should, this presently has an entirely different aromatic profile with its ripe and fresh combination of earth and sauvage characters together with both red and dark currant scents. Here too there is really lovely mouth feel to the tautly muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the energetic, detailed and beautifully persistent finish. This is also admirably seamless and should amply reward extended keeping.

  • Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (95)

A restrained but still wonderfully spicy nose consists of ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, lavender and black cherry liqueur. The middle weight flavors possess a highly refined mouthfeel with a silky mid-palate yet the hugely long and slightly warm finish is borderline chewy. There is no doubting the quality of the underlying material and the length here is genuinely superb but it would be fair to observe that this is a very robust RSV. Patience will be required.

  • Joseph & Philippe Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 2015 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

Bright ruby-red. Rather refined aromas and flavors of blackberry, licorice and violet. A bit youthfully clenched, with a note of marc and a peppery element contributing to the wine's primary quality. Nicely concentrated and dense but its fresh fruit flavors are a bit dominated by tannins in the early going (a good bit of this fruit derives from La Platière, which is located on the wrong side of the Route Nationale).

The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a class act in the making, perhaps one of the finest barrel samples that I have tasted from Drouhin. This gem has a gorgeous and extraordinarily pure bouquet with crushed strawberry, pomegranate and overripe orange scents that are exquisite and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with super fine, almost filigree tannin that seem to caress the senses. It constitutes the most sophisticated of Drouhin's 2015s with ineffable finesse on the finish that lingers so long in the mouth. This is simply a brilliant wine.
