Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Arnaud Ente Bourgogne Blanc 2015 (2x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (87)

The 2015 Bourgogne Blanc from Arnaud Ente is initially quite reduced, so decanting is advised if you're drinking this young, but with time in the glass a pretty bouquet of apple, pear and iodine begins to take shape. On the palate, the wine is medium-full, sappy and succulent, with more richness and texture than the Aligoté but without its intensity and purity. This would score higher if it weren't for the overt reduction. Ente's constantly delicious Bourgogne Blanc comes from young vines (a portion in the commune of Puligny, planted in 2002, and the rest in the commune of Meursault, planted in 2012), but while it commands a premium over his Aligoté, I tend to prefer the latter.

  • Arnaud Ente Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or 2015 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

Tasted blind, this was an exceptional showing for Ente's 2015 Meursault 1er Cru La Goutte d'Or, a beautiful wine that offers up a youthfully reserved bouquet of iodine, citrus oil and white flowers. On the palate, this Goutte d'Or is full-bodied, ample and layered, with terrific cut, concentration and length, its tension and vivacity lending it considerable drama despite its reticence in other respects.

  • Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des Ambres 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (89-92)

(from vines planted in the early 1950s): Bright, pale yellow. Ripe, fruity aromas of yellow peach, orange juice and lemon. Sweet and opulent but with good inner-mouth tension; a seductive fruit bomb of a Meursault with a seamless texture. Round, broad and mouthfilling without heaviness, and considerably riper and larger-scaled than the basic village offering.

  • Arnaud Ente Meursault La Seve du Clos 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

(these vines, which Ente says are 120 years old, produced just 14 hectoliters per hectare in 2015): Very bright, pale yellow. Riesling-like reduction to the very pure aromas of pineapple and lemon oil. Rich and chewy in the mouth, with the wine's seamless yellow fruit flavors giving a sweet impression that's nicely countered by a flavor of dusty stone. Ente noted that the ancient vines that he replanted when he started here go into his basic Meursault cuvée. With its bulletproof fruit and underlying minerality, this is a wonderfully plush and complete Meursault in the making.

    Vinous (90-93)

(Ente's brother Benoit used to make this wine; from vines planted in 1957): Exotic pineapple and lichee scents are lifted by flowers, spices and noble herbs. Broad and round, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and old-vines reserve. The driest of this set of 2015s and very backward: this wine will need time to fill in and express itself. Tricky to taste today.

  • Arnaud Ente Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2015 (10x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2015 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a clenched fist of a nose; the aromas are there, but it is almost as if this Volnay wants to keep the aromatics for itself instead of bestowing them upon the imbiber. Perhaps the best adjective is “selfish.” The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity that lends tension and energy, but remains very linear and strict in style. This is a Volnay that clearly refuses to come out and play at such a young age, and yet I suspect that it will mature into a very fine specimen with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru is very pretty, opening in the glass with notes of sweet cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, rose and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. Like most of Charles Lachaux's 2015s, this is shutting down, but it should be exceptional in the fullness of time. This is produced from a parcel in Rouges du Bas: one of the steeper, higher-altitude parts of Echézeaux, where the soil is thinner and the wines tend to be more tensile.

Deeper on the nose than the village Vosne, if not iniitially offering the same éclat of that wine; dark berry aromas are complicated by emerging notes of licorice, violet and mint. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannin which will demand some bottle age, and good depth at the core. Charles Lachaux observes that the Clos de Vougeot, which is not blessed with the domaine's best vine genetics, is one of the parcels which has demonstrated the greatest improvement with biodynamic farming.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2015 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the more aromatically reticent wines in the range, opening in the glass with notes of coniferous forest floor, raspberry and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is supple, silky and expansive, with a deep and sapid core of fruit, bright acids, and fine-grained, chalky tannins which assert themselves on the finish. This will need time, but the raw materials are promising.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Poisets 2015 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

(100% vendange entier; tasted from tank): Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper on the nose than the village Vosne, if not iniitially offering the same éclat of that wine; dark berry aromas are complicated by emerging notes of licorice, violet and mint. Plush and broad but quite airy and dry, offering an intriguing combination of thick texture and crunchy fruit. Plenty of stuffing for its ripe tannins. Displays a mineral quality on the spreading, glistening finish. The pH here is a rather high 3.77 but this wine does not lack for energy.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2015 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is lovely, revealing a beautifully pure bouquet of cassis, plum, clove, violets, rose petal and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and complete, with supple, fine-grained tannins and excellent depth and dimension, with the most flesh on its bones of all the domaine's grands crus. The inherent elegance of Romanée-Saint-Vivant really plays into Charles Lachaux's hands.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

Healthy dark red. Sexy, soil-driven nose melds raspberry, spices, herbs and smoky minerals. Plush, fine-grained and sweet yet somehow light on its feet; like the 2016 version, this has a very high pH around 3.9 but its savory minerality and stem element give it sufficient energy and lift. A wonderfully seamless ripe-but-dry wine with a very long, rising finish featuring refined tannins and lingering black cherry and licorice notes.

Good dark red. Subtle, lightly medicinal aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry, iron, tobacco and herbs. Plush, savory wine with terrific calcaire energy and lift to its darker berry and spice flavors. Delivers a rare combination of density and definition, no doubt due to the small crop and old vines here. Finishes firmly tannic and very long, with impressive sappiness for the vintage.

(70% vendange entier; 15% new oak; tasted from tank): Healthy dark red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, spices, bitter chocolate and licorice. Wonderfully dense but juicy too, with its black fruit and mint flavors lifted by a floral element. Voluminous, classy, perfumed and very long, with the tannins barely noticeable today. A superb village wine.
