Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Deep red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, clove and chocolate. Rich, full and deep; wonderfully sweet and silky, if not quite as primary as the Clos Vougeot. Spectacular middle-palate fruit and layered texture. Finishes with very refined, sweet tannins and great palate-staining persistence.

The 1998 Chambertin is one of the real surprises in this tasting. From a vintage that never got much of a look, Rousseau's Chambertin is a pure and total delight. It is not the most complex wine in the vertical, nor is it the most pedigreed, but it is absolutely exquisite, as all of its elements are in perfect balance. The plum, sweet tobacco, menthol and red cherry flavors, along with the wine's soft, open-knit personality, make the 1998 impossible to resist today. Readers looking for a vintage of the Rousseau Chambertin that is peaking will find much to admire in the 1998.

A marvel in your chalice, the Auvenay Meursault 1er Cru Les Narvaux 1998 exemplifies the finesse of Burgundy's white crus. The Narvaux terroir bestows a refinement that becomes manifest in the wine's bouquet and balance. As expected from Auvenay, this 1998 release is a testament to their legacy of crafting exquisitely layered wines with longevity and richness, that impress even the most discerning palates. Saturated medium ruby. Penetrating, superripe, slightly porty aromas of medicinal black cherry, cocoa powder, menthol and damp earth. Generous, pliant and really stuffed with fruit; very solid wine with lovely restrained sweetness. Powerful flavor of black plum outlasts the big chewy-but-ripe tannins. This will get sweeter as the tannins melt. But the '99 may be even more impressive.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Spiced apple, minerals and smoke on the nose. Dense and minerally in the mouth, with uncanny thickness for the vintage and the underlying structure of a red wine. Like the Meursault Perrieres, this should be long-lived for a '98.

Burghound (93)

The appearance is slightly cloudy with evident bricking. Fully mature aromas include those of sous-bois, old leather, dried rose petal and exotic tea that precede generously proportioned and lavishly rich medium-bodied flavors rich that possess a gorgeous mouth feel along with bright finishing acidity on the firm and slightly edgy though not austere finish. The '98 RC is satisfying for its sheer depth and power though it would be fair to observe that it's not the most elegant of vintages as it doesn't possess the sheer class and grace it typically does. For my taste, the '98 has peaked and while it should be capable of continuing to hold without difficulty, it's as good now as it will ever be. Tasted multiple times over the years with largely similar, if not identical, results.

At first this wine showed the spiky character of the 1998 vintage , both on the nose and with slightly discordant acidity on the palate. However the fruit began to take over and the acidity to integrate, resulting in a refined, classy wine that is still tightly coiled, but will certainly get there in due course.

The 1998 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru performs commendably given that I am not particularly fond of this growing season. The vibrant nose features black currant pastilles and a subtle marine influence; traits of kelp and iodine emerge with time. Very charming, and the whole-bunch addition is extremely well subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and fleshy, offering a caressing mouthfeel that you might mistake for a 1999. Granted, this 1998 is not as complex or as thrilling as the follow-up, yet it is nicely proportioned, with a discreet bitter edge on the sapid, conservative finish. Bottles can be consumed now but should give another 15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Clos Saint-Denis vertical at Hide restaurant. 92

Bright yellow-gold color. Flamboyant aromas of apricot, white truffle, nut oils, toast and curry powder, plus and a whiff of game; a bit funky in a good way and neither oxidized nor reduced. Plush and velvety in the mouth, in fact almost oily, in a slightly gamey style with very ripe apricot fruit. Could use bit more lift on the end. With its blend of sweet and dry elements, this wine offers charm. Its thick, mouthfilling texture may be appreciated more by mouth tasters but it maintains just enough mineral support. Brice de la Morandière described the 3.4 pH as like a red wine. (14% alcohol; 3.4 pH, September 23 harvest; from a year plagued by April frost, widespread outbreaks of oidium, and a scorching August heat wave)

Vinous (91)

Very full, dark red, which Trapet says was due to the long growing season, the small clusters and the thick skins--and possibly the quantity of bouillie bordelaise--a fungicide made from water, copper sulfate and lime--Trapet applied to protect his vines against an outbreak of oidium. Deeply pitched aromas of medicinal dark fruits, black licorice and truffley underbrush. Quite broad and densely packed but a bit musclebound, lacking the class, subtlety and sweetness of the outstanding '99. (I found this wine much more silky and complex at the outset.) A rather extreme and slightly dry-edged style, finishing with dusty tannins and some herbal impingements. Notes of licorice, spices and flowers give lift to the middle palate but I suspect this wine will turn even drier with more time in bottle. Early on, I read it as energetically extracted, but I suspect that it's simply the product of its extreme growing season. According to Trapet, April was cold and May was hot, leading to an early flowering that was difficult and drawn out in some parcels. Favorable sunny weather after July 9 led to quick ripening in spite of the oidium issues and the veraison took place around August 10 in very hot weather. There was more rain after that, and a very cool period in late August, but the small, thick-skinned grapes resisted the moisture and the Chambertin was picked on September 26 under sunny conditions. (13.15% alcohol; 3.58 pH; 3.8 g/l acidity; 34 h/h; this was Trapet's first year working his vines totally organically)
