Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

There is a cavalcade of visitors yearning to tour his cellars and meet the man...just to look at his barrel-and-a-bit of Musigny would be enough. And Christophe himself? The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. (aging in two new Remond barrels): Bright, dark red. Deep, brooding aromas of black cherry and smoke are currently muted by a bit of reduction. Then wonderfully sweet, silky and seamless on the palate, conveying an incredibly suave texture and great inner-mouth perfume to the complex flavors of dark berries, earth and smoky oak. Very classy juice; Boillot told me he used the same precise barrique for the Volnay Champans and that he plans to use more Remond barrels in the future. While the wood treatment and associated menthol character are not subtle they stop short of dominating the more elegant if otherwise similar nose. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer; indeed it's seductive, while offering more evident minerality on the ever-so-mildly austere, complex, balanced and impressively long finale. Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots was the last to be picked as they wanted to wait for the weather to achieve ripeness (around September 24). The nose is very attractive, with the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and vigor, subtle woodland aromas, perhaps even a hint of mushroom. Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes was picked a little earlier just to keep the acidity from the berries that were affected by millerandage. It has a well defined bouquet with light gravel scents infusing the blackberry and briary fruit. This is very correct but also very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly earthy red berry fruit. There is still some oak to be subsumed, but I think it was a right decision to pick early as the acidity maintains sufficient tension on the slightly foursquare finish.

  • Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. That may come by the time it is in bottle, but for now, it is the finesse that comes through in barrel.

Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. It's hard to believe that this fruit was picked with potential alcohol of just 12.3%.

  • Henri Boillot Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (94-97)

(aging in two new Remond barrels): Bright, dark red. Deep, brooding aromas of black cherry and smoke are currently muted by a bit of reduction. Then wonderfully sweet, silky and seamless on the palate, conveying an incredibly suave texture and great inner-mouth perfume to the complex flavors of dark berries, earth and smoky oak. Very classy juice; Boillot told me he used the same precise barrique for the Volnay Champans and that he plans to use more Remond barrels in the future. The rising, subtly spicy finish shows uncanny energy and a lighter touch than the Clos de Bèze. A knockout.

Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers and gibier, lifted by a note of white pepper. Comes across as distinctly wild after Boillot's estate bottlings from the Côte de Beaune. Quite broad and round for both Clos Vougeot and the 2014 vintage, offering noteworthy freshness, pliancy and depth. Finishes very smooth and long, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and no hard edges.

    Burghound (90)

While the wood treatment and associated menthol character are not subtle they stop short of dominating the more elegant if otherwise similar nose. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer; indeed it's seductive, while offering more evident minerality on the ever-so-mildly austere, complex, balanced and impressively long finale. As it should be, given that the blend is from 5 different 1ers, this is a villages plus in terms of quality.

Dark red-ruby. Tight, medicinal aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and menthol. Very rich and deep, with captivating sweetness cut by medicinal menthol and minerals. Highly concentrated, dense and broad but uncompromisingly dry. Finishes very long and perfumed, with serious saline tension. This very impressive premier cru has a big tannic structure and may well close down after the bottling.

  • Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots 2014 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots was the last to be picked as they wanted to wait for the weather to achieve ripeness (around September 24). The nose is very attractive, with the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and vigor, subtle woodland aromas, perhaps even a hint of mushroom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, masculine and upright with decent structure, "correct" on the finish but precise and detailed. This shows what this vineyard can do in the right hands.

  • Heresztyn-Mazzini Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 2014 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes was picked a little earlier just to keep the acidity from the berries that were affected by millerandage. It has a well defined bouquet with light gravel scents infusing the blackberry and briary fruit. This is very correct but also very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly earthy red berry fruit. There is still some oak to be subsumed, but I think it was a right decision to pick early as the acidity maintains sufficient tension on the slightly foursquare finish.

(Lafon bought seven hectares of east-facing vines on clay-rich soil in Viré in 2009, including some that date back to the 1930s; the youngest vines here are at least 30 years of age): Bright lemon-yellow. Intriguing aromas of pear, white peach, flowers, minerals, menthol and white pepper. Pliant and thick but very juicy and fresh; lovely lemony cut (4.4 acidity) gives a light touch to the fruit. Shows strong spine and structure without especially high acidity. Lovely fine-grained wine with class. This vineyard needed a lot of work, noted Gon.
