Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Romain Taupenot has not been afraid to make ageworthy wines in 2012, but they aren't overly tannic or woody, just structured and well balanced. This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2012 Corton Rognet dazzles from start to finish. Tar, licorice, black cherries, smoke and spices burst from the glass as this exuberant, powerful Burgundy shows off its personality. The 2012 is rich, intense and massively structured, but all the elements are in the right place. Readers lucky enough to find the 2012 should plan on giving the wine a few years in the cellar. Today, the Corton Rognet is striking. In 2012 there are just 4 barrels instead of the typical 7 or so.

Vinous (94)

The 2012 Mazoyères-Chambertin displays fine intensity and conviction on the nose, a mixture of black and blue fruit borrowing some of the floral notes (iris rather than violet) from the 2013. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy texture and it coheres nicely in the glass. Juxtaposed against the 2011 and 2013, the 2012 has a little more length and depth, and more mineralité on the finish. You could broach this now, though personally I would wait another couple of years.

The 2012 Morey Saint Denis La Riotte is simply fabulous. Endowed with stunning energy and precision, the 2012 shows off layers of black fruit, crushed rocks, violets and baking spices, all supported by veins of underlying tension and saline minerality. A dazzling, salivating finish rounds things out beautifully. In 2012, the Riotte is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty.

(80% new oak; 60% vendange entier): Good dark red. Complex nose and palate meld cherry liqueur, animal fur, resiny spices and cedar, lifted by high notes of flowers and citrus peel. Very sweet, silky and ripe, with outstanding sappy verve giving this dense, tactile yet suave wine a noble quality. The very long, mounting finish shows superb fine-grained tannins and building sweetness. A real essence of this grand cru.

The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 0.42 hectares of 50-year-old vines. This is another exemplary expression of this vineyard with a more sensual bouquet than the Charmes-Chambertin: perfumed raspberry and fresh strawberries billowing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very well poised and sporting well-judged acidity. There is a natural, refined composure to this Mazis-Chambertin, which does not short-change you in fruit intensity on the rounded, velvety finish. This is probably the best wine I have tasted from this domaine.

Made from two parcels within the Grand Cru (with the classic mix of high and low situations), this is picked on two different dates. Whatever the reason (and great winemaking hsas something to do with it, too) it's often one of my favourite Clos de Vougeots. Slghtly reductive, but this is fine, succulent and nuanced.

There are only three barrels of this in 2012 (at the best of times, it's a hand-made, small quantity wine), but what a sublime Musigny it is. Floral and scented with velvety tannins, effortless concentration, some spicy whole bunch notes, subtle oak and a sappy, sikly mid-palate. So good, you could drink it now. But wait!

Burghound (96)

This is arguably the most elegant wine in the range with its ultra-pure aromas of quinine, oyster shell, mineral reduction and floral elements that are also trimmed in just enough wood to warrant commenting on it. There is a caressing, even seductive mouth feel to the beautifully well-delineated and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess an almost delicate quality before culminating in a nearly startlingly explosive finish that just goes on and on. This bone dry effort is an exercise in harmony and grace, or otherwise expressed, a classic Preuses. In a word, brilliant.
