Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (91+)Bright, deep ruby-red. Pure dark berries, tar and violet on the high-pitched nose. At once lush and juicy, with terrific definition to its flavors of black fruits, tar and mint. The substantial, strong tannins reach the front teeth. Finishes uncompromisingly dry but with the fat of the year. Bachelet tends to press early, as he's afraid of getting too much extraction of tannins in the presence of alcohol. This one needs a solid decade of bottle aging. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Mid blueish crimson with quite a pale rim. Light nose initially with a hint of undergrowth but lots of ripe sweetness underneath. Jewel bright, so bright, fruit – not that intense, but very winning, and it opened up in the glass becoming more intense and super-bright cherry fruity with the merest hint of espresso. Marked acidity on the palate is the first impression and then some oak tannin still. Very, very youthful – much more introspective than I remember the 2004s at this stage. Even severe. You take this on faith at this stage because the fruit weight is not sufficient to distract from all the infant aspects of acid and tannin. |

Vinous (97)I was blown away by the 2005 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru because though I have tasted it two or three times, never could I envisage that it would reach this level. It has laser-like precision on the nose with more blue fruit than I remember, so much mineralité, as if someone had just ground limestone directly into the wine glass. The palate is exquisitely balanced with filigree tannins framing the pure red fruit, a Pinot Noir with unerring symmetry. It gains weight and depth with aeration, ultimately transforming into a profound wine and one of the best bottles of Grands-Echézeaux that I have tasted from the domaine. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London. |

Vinous (92+)Saturated, bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of red berries, minerals, underbrush, smoke and oak. The mid-palate shows a vibrant sweetness and a pronounced minerality but today is dominated by a strong and slightly raw oakiness. I find this tough going today, but the wine's powerful extract, strong acidity and firm tannic spine suggest it will reward 10 or 12 years of cellaring. Vinous (97)The 2005 Ruchottes-Chambertin is the highlight of recent vintages. It has a brilliant nose that is endowed with astonishing precision, far more than previous vintages with mineral-rich cassis and red cherry fruit, later a hint of oyster shell. Crystalline is the word that springs to mind. The palate is symmetrical in terms of its balance, armed with filigree tannin, show-stopping purity and a satin-like finish that takes your breath away. Is there a touch of stem addition on the end? I don't care. This is a gold-plated fabulous wine. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London. |

Wine Advocate (93-94)The 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras smells of ripe blackberry, raspberry, forest floor and chalk dust. A polished, creamy, yet palpably chalky and brightly fresh-fruited palate offers a sumptuous saturation of black and red fruits with inner-mouth aromatic accents of cherry pit, pistachio, flowers and citrus zest. Wine Advocate (90-91)Like the rest of the wines here at the time I tasted, Roumier’s 2005 Morey St. Denis Clos de la Bussiere had been sulfured and racked in autumn after a very late malo and was in barrel awaiting imminent assemblage in tank for (unfiltered) bottling. It was slightly reduced but responded well to a good shaking, displaying subtle black fruits, high-toned almond and maraschino, roasted meatiness, resin, and forest floor notes on the nose. It fills the mouth with roasted meat richness, bitter-sweet black fruits, high-toned distilled fruit esters, and finishes with solidity, grip, and savory saltiness. |

Vinous (98+)Saturated dark red. Knockout nose combines blueberry, blackberry, violet, orange peel, crushed rocks and minerals. Almost painful in its pure sappy density, with palate-staining flavors of wild dark berries, flowers, and pepper. And yet this is easier to taste today than the comparatively compact Bonnes-Mares. The fabulous mounting finish goes on and on. An incredible wine, with great complexity to come. This boasts the density of a diamond. |

(Unfortunately, my sample of the Mazis-Chambertin was corked.) |

This shows wonderful primary fruit intensity and energy, exciting length, and the promise of continued poise and polish for at least another 10-12 years. |
