Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Burghound (98)Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. |

Burghound (98)This seems to have changed very little in the past 10 years and it would be fair to describe its evolution as glacial as the ripe but exuberantly fresh nose is even spicier than that of the '05 Chambertin (see herein) with kaleidoscopic breadth and depth. Like its stablemate this is a big and imposingly-scaled effort that possesses outstanding mid-palate concentration as the tannin-buffering sap completely coats the mouth on the explosively long, muscular and powerful finale. Despite the strikingly good size, weight and punch this remains a beautifully well-balanced effort that will need at least another 10 years of cellar time because even though it's not quite as structured and backward as the Cham, it is nowhere close to being ready for prime time. That said, it should be genuinely breathtaking when it finally arrives at its apogee. Tasted twice in the last year with consistent results. |

Wine Advocate (97)One of the great renditions of this cuvée in recent times is the 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, a magical wine that unfurls in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of red berries and plums mingled with hints of raw cocoa, violets, blood orange and peony, complemented by enticing carnal bass notes. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and complete, with fine concentration, racy but ripe acids and ample reserves of fine, powdery tannin, concluding with a long and sapid finish. The 2005 Clos Saint-Jacques is a decade away from full maturity, but its reference-point quality has long been impossible to miss. This bottle, enjoyed in a Burgundian restaurant, only amplified my regret that I have none of this particular vintage in my own cellar. |

Vinous (91)Sexy aromas of citrus fruits, oatmeal and smoke. Sweetly spicy in the mouth, with a ripe peach flavor and a seductively supple texture. Very good acidity frames the fruit and extends the finish. (Two other Meursaults were considerably more difficult to taste: A village wine, simply labeled Meursault, was plagued by mercaptan, and despite offering sexy hazelnut and oatmeal flavors and harmonious acidity was impossible to judge. And a Meursault Les Narvaux showed a resiny aroma of Calvados. Madame Bize said the wine was simply too young, and I suppose it's possible that it was going through an oxidative stage.) |

Vinous (95+)(13.6% alcohol; 30 h/h; 9/26 harvest): Healthy full red. Ripe, rich nose offers a spectacular combination of red and darker fruits, minerals, spices, mocha, mint, dried flowers and underbrush, lifted by strong florality. Wonderfully concentrated, sappy, still-youthful wine with outstanding tactile depth and fruit retention to its flavors of cherry, redcurrant and crushed rock. Combines the energy and precision of the '08 with the greater volume of the '09.

This compellingly chewy, extract-rich wine, still a bit brooding and short of its peak, expands and builds inexorably on the aftertaste. There's a 3-D texture and a noble soil character here that I find exhilarating. |

Vinous (94+)Good deep, bright red. Urgent aromas of crushed dark fruits and white pepper; brilliantly delineated but extremely unevolved. Then wonderfully juicy and bright in the mouth, with complex mocha and game hints adding interest to the concentrated, sappy berry flavors. Dense, classically dry and thoroughly ripe grand cru that's still a bit closed in on itself. The very long, slow-mounting finish features substantial suave tannins and terrific underlying structure. This should evolve in bottle for at least a couple of decades. |

Jancis Robinson (19)Dark crimson. Brilliant energy and drive. Sharp and linear – I'm sure winemaker François Millet has a sonnet to describe the character of this wine – and bursting with fruit. Just starting to drink well. Extremely rich and sweet with some black cherry aspects to it. Very winning. Enjoyed at a dinner in the Adelaide Hills. Perhaps its journey across the equator had brought it on? |

Vinous (98+)Bright, dark, saturated red-ruby. Pungent, noble aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers, white pepper and powdered stone. Enters the palate with a wonderful lightness, then mounts impressively toward the back and saturates the entire mouth with fruits, spices, minerals and earth. As flamboyantly sweet as this wine is today, it's most remarkable for its power, definition, energy and cut. The tannins are still a bit youthfully spiky but this extremely backward wine finishes with superb thrust, grip and persistence. It's hard to imagine that this wine won't gain in texture and complexity over the next 20 to 30 years of aging in a cold cellar. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-90)(from vines between 60 and 80 years of age) Good full red. Sexy aromas of cherry and Oriental spice. Fat, sweet and concentrated, with a gamey nuance and good inner-mouth life. This has lovely supple fruit nicely framed by firm acidity. Finishes with noteworthy persistence. A very good year for this clay-rich parcel. |

Burghound (95)A ripe, expressive and fantastically complex nose that features a huge array of red and especially blue fruits, spice, earth, game and underbrush notes that leads to rich, full, suave and seriously deep flavors that coat the mouth on the long, concentrated and palate staining finish. This seems almost approachable but it's because the firm lashing of tannin is perfectly integrated and this will last for years but require at least a decade before even beginning to drink well. |

Wine Advocate (89-90)The de Montille 2005 Volnay Mitans displays a lovely nose of ripe cherry and flowers with an iodine mineral-medicinal note that, together with fruit skin tartness, follows on a highly-concentrated, impressively-layered, finely-tannic palate, with raw meat, floral and mineral suggestions dominating over any sweetness of fruit. The tightly wound finish here is smoky, pungent and subtly bitter. In two or three years one would be able to glean a clearer notion of this wine’s ultimate personality. |

Vinous (91+)Bright, deep ruby-red. Pure dark berries, tar and violet on the high-pitched nose. At once lush and juicy, with terrific definition to its flavors of black fruits, tar and mint. The substantial, strong tannins reach the front teeth. Finishes uncompromisingly dry but with the fat of the year. Bachelet tends to press early, as he's afraid of getting too much extraction of tannins in the presence of alcohol. This one needs a solid decade of bottle aging. |
