Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is matured in 100% new oak as usual. There is quite a bit of reduction on the nose that despite rigorous aeration I find difficult to dislodge. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like succulent entry, quite a "gourmand" Echézeaux, a little savoury; the oak is quite vocal at the moment. Pleasing bitter edge on the finish. Only four barrels produced.

100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. We cannot see the detail yet but the 2022 Echezeaux finishes gracefully, with finesse. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has quite a sweet and candied bouquet with red cherries, redcurrant jam, fig and light rose petal scents. A touch of blood orange emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and ripe, though it does not quite deliver the complexity of its peers on the flattering, slightly confit finish and opts to play it safe. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from the Les Treux lieu-dit and will undergo 20 months in new oak. The wood dominates the nose at the moment, although there seems to be sufficient black cherry and crushed strawberry fruit behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, smooth tannins, the new oak nicely integrated. It will require 4–5 years in bottle but I think this could turn out nicely.

Moderate reduction dominates the nose so if you're tempted to try this young be sure to give it a thorough aeration. More interesting today are the attractively fresh and tension-filled flavors that exhibit excellent delineation on the sappy, complex and even more persistent built-to-age finale that is also mildly warm. In a word, impressive.

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru was not touched by the frost this season. It has a very composed and well-defined bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit. I like the focus and cohesion here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but fine tannin, finely structured and precise with great purity and superb freshness on the finish. This has 10% stems, but you cannot tell at all, and you are left with the impression that this is really a top-notch Echézeaux that is destined to give 15 to 20 years pleasure (if allowed).
