Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (92+)

Pale, bright yellow. Restrained aromas of iodine, crushed rock and chestnut. Densely packed but slightly spiky and uncompromisingly dry, offering a bracing combination of lemon and pineapple fruit, firm minerality and lively acidity. Very tightly chiseled in the middle palate but opens out somewhat on the rocky back end, finishing with echoing flavors of lemon and saline minerality. Still, this youthfully unforthcoming wine will require patience.

Imbued with finesse and pedigree, the Michel Bouzereau Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 2018 is a magnificent product of the highly esteemed Bouzereau estate. Located in France's venerable Burgundy region, this wine represents the height of Chardonnay expression. Employing traditional vinification methods, the fermentation takes place in oak barrels which bestows precious complexities and textures to the wine.

Under the direction of Jean-Baptiste, a seventh-generation winemaker, the Michel Bouzereau Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 2018 shows consistency with its predecessor vintages, admired for their bright fruit notes buoyed by a robust minerality. In the backdrop, the enchanting aromas of honeysuckle and fresh almonds create a harmonious olfactory experience.

A quintessential Meursault, the Michel Bouzereau Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 2018 delivers an elegant balance of firm structure and delicate richness. Every sip offers a remarkable depth of flavour, making it a must-addition to any fine wine collection.

Pale bright yellow. Pear, apple and stone on the nose. Juicy and intense on the palate, showing lovely energy and minerality. A major step up in intensity and length from the Charmes, displaying lovely definition and a saline quality. Offers a rather refined texture, with its harmonious acidity well supported by flesh. Finishes with good lingering fruit and stone flavors.

The 2017 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a wine that I never tasted in barrel, though I wish I had! It has a well-defined, slightly creamy nose, hints of praline and salted caramel in the background, and mineralité in the driving seat. The terroir really comes through thanks to the supremely well judged acidity and beautifully managed new oak. A very harmonious and poised finish lingers temptingly in the mouth. Not a brash Meursault by any stretch, but self-aware of its class. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru comes from a single 0.52-hectare parcel. It boasts a more complex bouquet than the Les Charmes-Dessus, offering an enticing mélange of crushed stone, pineapple, tangerine and yellow plum; menthol scents emerge with time. The palate is very well balanced with an oily-textured opening. There is fabulous intensity here, and very fine acidity. Citrus fruit and white peach appear toward the persistent finish. Superb.

The 2019 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru has a slightly richer bouquet compared to Bouzereau’s other cuvées, presenting dried honey and orange pith scents plus honeysuckle and beeswax. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Harmonious and full of energy. The vibrant citrus/lime finish fans out wonderfully and the spicy aftertaste is one of the longest I have found on this particular cuvée. Superb.

(80% of this wine is from a 1938 planting in Perrières du Haut, the other 20% from 60-year-old vines near the Clos des Perrières ): Alluring lemon-yellow color. A touch of noble reduction to the aromas of ripe peach, pineapple, nut oils and smoky minerality. Suave, silky and utterly seamless in the mouth (this wine always displays a thicker texture, notes Bouzereau), conveying an almost oily quality to its yellow fruit flavors. The wine's acidity is a bit soft and nicely integrated. I suspect this wine will gain in shape and terroir character during its last months of élevage, as its minerality emerges.

The 2018 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru comes from two parcels, 20% in Perrières-Dessus planted in 1955 and another part, 80% of the parcel, planted back in 1938. It has a very intense bouquet, like the Genevrières, featuring walnut, linseed oil and light white peach aromas. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. As Perrières should be, this is taut, linear and powerful, with hints of fresh grapefruit, tangerine and peach appearing toward the persistent finish. A superb Perrières, but does it possess the charm of the Genevrières?

The 2019 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a tight, focused nose of gunflint and gravel, expressing this noble vineyard extremely well in the sense that it could not be from anywhere else. The palate is well balanced with touches of orange peel, ginger and light savory notes on the entry. Quite a phenolically driven Perrières, it has wonderful length, even if it does not quite have the clinical precision of, say, Dominique Lafon’s own Perrières. The 2018 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru is one of the first parcels that Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau picks, since it is one of his most precocious holdings. Curiously, it sports a Puligny-like bouquet of wet limestone and green apple scents. (as with the Bourgogne Blanc, half of this wine is aging in 500-liter barrels): Bright yellow. Classic Meursault nose combines peach, fresh apricot, spices and hazelnut. Yellow fruit flavors are complicated by saline soil tones and nicely framed by ripe acidity. A bit firmer on the finish than the Bourgogne Blanc but also has more punch. (Compared to this wine, the fruit was a bit too ripe in the '16, according to Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau.)

Vinous (88-90)

(the estate carried out three different élevages for this wine, one of them using Hungarian oak): Bright, light yellow. A note of noble reduction to the aromas of white peach, clove and musky minerals. Supple and juicy, conveying an impression of sucrosité to its dried fruit, almond paste and spice flavors. But this wine is fully dry. Finishes tactile and persistent, with a saline quality and a faint bitter edge.

Vinous (88)

Aromas of yellow fruits and spicy oak, plus a whiff of caramel. Reasonably intense wine with yellow fruit and spice flavors supported by ripe acidity and lifted by a mineral element. Not particularly nuanced but not short on energy. About half of this wine comes from hillside vines, the other half from the bottom of the hill on gravelly soil.

An expertly crafted wine from the Burgundy region, the Michelot Meursault-Charmes 1er Cru 2019 exhibits the quintessence of French winemaking. Born from the hands of the Michelot family, who have been meticulously cultivating vineyards for six generations in Meursault, it offers a sophisticated expression of Chardonnay. Fermentation occurs in oak barrels, followed by an 18-month cellaring period, to produce a wine that marries the austerity of mineral Chardonnay with the richness of Burgundian terroir.

The wine has an elegant golden hue and bewitches with its broad aromatic palette, from tinges of fresh, ripe fruit to exotic spices. The full-bodied yet balanced palette captivates with its depth, complexity, and lasting finish. 2019 was a vintage marked by good ripeness, and the Michelot Meursault-Charmes 1er Cru 2019 reflects this beautifully. It's a testament to the exceptional care taken in its crafting, distilling the character of its unique provenance into every bottle.

Vinous (91-93)

(from vines picked near the beginning of the harvest; just about finished with its malolactic fermentation): Pale yellow color. Aromas of peach, white pepper and menthol. Nicely concentrated flavors of pineapple, stone fruits, clove and saline minerality juxtapose a subtle savory character with a sexy touch of sweetness. A step up in texture and length from Michelot's Meursault Charmes, which was quite silky, ripe and high-toned at the time of my visit but had barely started its malolactic fermentation. A tad phenolic on the back end.
