Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Medium red. Strawberry liqueur, dried rose and peppery herbs on the nose. Silky in texture but a bit backward and medicinal, even rustic, offering cranberry, spice and herb flavors and a slight peppery greenness. I find this a bit herbal and shallow for grand cru. Needs time but will it blossom and fill out? Nicely delineated and aromatic but lacks the depth and full ripeness of the best wines here in 2014. This parcel located just below Chambertin is part of Faiveley's acquisition of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a single hectare that came from Faiveley’s purchase of Dupont-Tisserandot. The parcels lie right across the road from Chambertin, and the vines are around 70 years old, although they were due to be pulled up the week after my visit, since they are becoming unproductive. This has a slightly smudged, floral bouquet that gains clarity with aeration, but does not quite have the delineation of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and good grip, quite Mazoyères-like in terms of structure, and an attractive spicy finish. It maybe just lacks the finesse of the very finest Charmes-Chambertins.

Good deep red. Strawberry, flowers, pepper and pencil lead on the nose. Silky on the palate but a bit tighter than the Combottes, with enticing balance. The peppery nuance carries through in the mouth. Here the tannins are noticeable, though, even a tad dry. This may get a fining, says Jeremy.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, bursting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, orange rind, spices, black truffle, espresso roast and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and mouthfilling, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish.

Charmes and Mazoyères. Barrel sample – taken from a new barrel (70% new for the grands crus though they are starting to reduce this). Sweet oaky spice adding to the fruit spice. Thick texture from the oak but under that is a well of lovely fruit. Chewy texture. Not notably fresh but balanced and likely to ‘stretch’ and freshen with longer élevage. A powerhouse.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an airy and generous bouquet with lifted black fruit, hoisin and light roasted chestnut aromas, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautiful line of acidity, svelte and harmonious with a slightly grainy-textured finish. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. "It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years," remarked Alex Seysses. Proof of that is evident by tasting this superb Charmes-Chambertin.

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of "Les Charmes". This cuvée was heavily reduced on the nose, so skipping past that, the palate is juicy on the entry, with fine acidity. However, I feel it does not possess the complexity and mineral-drive as the superb Aux Combottes this year, as if to say, "you take the honours".

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru, under the négoce label, is a debut release from just 500 square meters of ancient vine acquired from a distant relative of the family; Pierre Duroché manages the vineyard and harvests the crop. This is aged in one new 150-liter barrel. It has a really entrancing bouquet that soars from the glass, offering pure red cherries, crushed strawberry, minerals and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, filigreed tannins. There is an unerring symmetry about this Chambertin, which is one of the best you will find in 2019. The persistence is astounding, though that is partially driven by the new wood. This will be fascinating to taste in bottle.

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a powerful nose with broody dark berry, cola-tinged fruit that need more delineation and terroir-expression--the winemaking comes through a little strongly here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, quite plush tannin and a little more...decorum...than the aromatics, as if it has just remembered that it is a Grand Cru. Presenting Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015, a truly remarkable venture into the world of Burgundian excellence. This illustrious wine has been created in the celebrated vineyards of Charmes-Chambertin, birthed in the rich, clay-limestone soils known for producing remarkable vintages. Painstakingly curated by prodigious winemaker Vincent Geantet, each bottle encapsulates a legacy stretching back to 1954. The vineyard practices traditional viticulture, ensuring both harmony and respect for nature. This exquisite red melds power and intensity with finesse and elegance effortlessly. Each pour unleashes complex aromas of luscious cherry, rich spices, and subtle undertones of oak. Its robust palate allows for an evocative journey, revealing deep layers of cranberry, dark chocolate, and plum. Singularity is translated into elegance in this offering by Geantet-Pansiot. Trust in the label, the Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 is a symphony in a bottle, waiting to cast a spell on your senses.

Vinous (90)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is closed on the nose, even a little broody, offering dark berry fruit, cola and light undergrowth scents. It does not quite deliver the complexity of its peers. The palate is chewy and simple for a Grand Cru, with high-toned red fruit, but it just lacks elegance and precision on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
