Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well defined, quite vivid bouquet with blueberry, loganberry, pitted black olive and light sea spray aromas. This is one of the best aromatics that I have encountered from this Grand Cru in 2019. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It is actually quite "Mazis" in style thanks to the structure, though it closes down a touch towards the almost surly finish. This is a "serious" Charmes-Chambertin from Arnaud Mortet that deserves several years in bottle.

  • Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, 50% whole bunch and 50% new oak, has an elegant bouquet that is cut from a different cloth compared to the Mazoyères that Mortet insisted should be vinified separately as they are two different terroirs. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fine balanced, maybe not quite as sophisticated or as nuanced as the Mazoyères yet certainly long.

  • Benjamin Leroux Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)
  • Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Saturated, bright ruby-red. Flamboyantly aromatic, wild nose features blackberry, meat, licorice, minerals, espresso and sexy oak. Like liquid silk on the palate, but with great concentration to the perfumed flavors of dark fruits, game and violet. Wonderfully classy grand cru that finishes with superb length and lift and fine-grained, utterly seamless tannins. Seems a far cry from Dugat's more extractive, chunkier wines of the late '80s and early '90s. This obviously got a very soft bottling, without fining or filtration.

(two-third Charmes and one-third Mazoyères): Bright ruby-red. Highly complex scents of black raspberry, wild faded rose, menthol, bitter chocolate and licorice. Juicy, spicy and round, with a firm spine of acidity invigorating the dark fruit, spice and floral flavors. Finishes lively and very long, with serious tannins buffered by mid-palate material. Strong juice!

  • Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Offering up aromas of cherries, wild berries, licorice and loamy soil that only hint at the aromatic range to come with a little bottle age, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and sumptuous, its deep and multidimensional core fruited by rich but refined tannins and lively balancing acids, concluding with a long, beautifully defined finish. This is a serious, concentrated Charmes that—as I wrote last year—fully vindicates Loïc Dugat-Py's decision to harvest early, as well as his move to a reduced percentage of new oak (only 66%) for this cuvée.
