Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (97)Bright, dark red; a bit more saturated than the Mazis. Knockout, slightly liqueur-like aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice and mint, complicated by musky soil tones. Pure silk on the palate but with its uncanny thickness of texture leavened by energy. This wonderfully tactile, savory wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and finishes with powerful medicinal reserve and incredible building length. And yet there's no impression of weightiness here. This could be enjoyed right now with the right piece of meat, but I'd rather lay it down for eight or ten years. |

Vinous (94-97)Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate. |

Wine Advocate (97)Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Damoy's 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was one of the highlights of the entire tasting. It has a showstopper of a nose with brilliantly defined black plum, cranberry, wild strawberry, sous bois and minerals. You just have to stop and admire the clarity of the aromatics here. Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru comes from 0.60-hectares of vines split over two parcels, one planted in the 1950s and the other in 2001 when the old vines were pulled up. It is completely destemmed. It has a refined bouquet, very well defined, natural and poised with slightly earthy red berry fruit that grow in stature in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a touch of graphite infusing the red cherry fruit. I like the poise here, then tension and the finesse shown on the finish - a lovely Clos-de-Bèze that comes recommended. |

Vinous (96)Ruby-red. Sauvage aromas of black raspberry, blood orange, purple flowers, licorice and Worcestershire sauce; lifted by a suggestion of grapefruit. Thick, lush and seamless, but given razor sharp precision by penetrating acids. At once creamy and solid yet amazingly bright. Strong violety flavor carries through to the explosively long finish. Ripe tannins are inundated by velvety fruit. This is really amazing juice. |

Vinous (93-96)(70% vendange entier; 100% new oak; these 80-year-old vines produced 37 hectoliters per hectare in 2013): Bright, dark red. Lovely pepper-and-spice lift to the aromas of red cherry, rose petal and licorice. Sappy and dense, with a captivating light touch and a compelling sweet/savory balance to the red fruit and licorice flavors. The very long finish features noble tannins and a building spiciness. A bit hard to taste today owing to a high level of carbon dioxide but looks to be brilliant. |

Vinous (97)The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an odd nose, lacking the intensity of the first two Clos-de-Bèze, a bit awkward and stalky but that will be resolved with time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, white pepper, marmalade and orange peel. Quite focused and linear, perhaps the nose is just going through an awkward phase? Indeed, the aromatics improve and the palate develops more and more depth. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. |

Vinous (94-96)Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle. |
