Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Bouchard’s holding here is superb: 0.90ha on the edge of the Puligny side at midslope between Ramonet and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 2019, Bouchard emphasised the richness by picking this parcel last. Ripe apples, white flowers and even a touch of honey make their appearance on the nose, while the texture on the palate is unctuous and deep without being heavy. There is still enough freshness to keep this lively through the intensely long finish.

Cinnamon and clove blend with pear core, chamomile, sweet orchard fruit and crushed rocks. Though thoroughly concentrated with good extract, the wine seems to float on the palate thanks to the gracious lift of the seamless, mouth-watering acidity. Vague chalkiness adds compelling texture to the long finish. 2025-40

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has so much fruit on the nose: blackberry, sous-bois and cedar, more rose scents than I observed out of barrel last year. I feel that this is more powerful than the 2019, an unapologetically extravagant Clos de Bèze yet with a lithe, sensual finish that actually reminds more of Armand Rousseau. Yet - it's that good.

The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru contains around two-thirds whole bunches. The Ruchottes-Chambertin immediately puts the Charmes-Chambertin in its place with more fruit intensity; the limestone terroir percolates through with aplomb. Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2014 Clos de Tart Grand Cru will contain 40% whole bunch fruit in the final. It was picked from September 17 until September 22. This blend that I tasted included the young vines at the bottom of the vineyard that may or may not be deselected to make a Forge de Tart (the decision will be made next year). It is also the first vintage that does not include old vines at the northwest corner that were pulled up in spring 2014, due to be replanted in four years' time. It has a very well defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, fine mineral tones and is quite harmonious with hints of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied and I feel this has tightened up since I tasted it in September 2015. The fruit also seems a little darker. Blackberry and wild cherry, with a hint of cola and certainly more tangible mineralité on the finish, as you can feel the mouth tingling long after it has bid adieu.

The 2019 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly. Mingling notes of wild berries and cherries with hints of peonies, rose petal, orange rind, exotic spices and musk, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a velvety attack that segues into a fleshy, textural mid-palate defined by depth and purity of fruit, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

The 2020 Clos de Tart Grand Cru contains around 55% whole bunch this year with 65% new oak. It has a very limpid hue in the glass. The bouquet takes time to open but my word, it is beautiful, extraordinarily pure with black cherries, crushed stone, hints of pressed violet all exquisitely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth texture, fine acidity, the neatly integrated. Very sleek and sensual on the finish, this is a very sophisticated and somehow "complete" Clos de Tart. Around 13,000 bottles produced.

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru comprises of a slight reconfiguration of sub-plots as they undergo replanting via massale sélection, including 25% whole clusters. This has much more delineation on the nose, poised and quite floral with more cohesion than the Morey Village. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, much more fruit concentration, lightly spiced with a silky finish that lingers much longer. Enjoy over the next decade.

Burghound (96)

A background note of matchstick character is present on the ripe citrus, spiced green apple and airy white flower aromas. There is good if not massive size and weight to the rich, fleshy and mouth coating large-scaled flavors that evidence obvious power while brimming with minerality on the almost painfully intense and sneaky long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. As is often the case with the Coche Corton-Charlemagne, it is built for the very long-term and it wouldn't surprise me if 20 years was necessary to see this at its full maturity.

(bottled in June of 2016): Dark red. Deep fruit aromas of plum and redcurrant are complicated by leather, game and earth nuances. Surprisingly silky and broad, with its red fruit and smoke flavors joined by a note of milk chocolate. The wine's substantial dusty but ultimately refined tannins currently shorten its finish but there's enough mid-palate density here for this wine to come into balance with bottle aging. Finishes with hints of olive tapenade and milk chocolate. With aeration this wine showed a lovely combination of sweetness and acidity.

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

Bright ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, minerals, violet and blood orange. Silky-sweet, dense and thick, with sexy oak tones and compelling sugar/acid snap. Here the tannins are thoroughly buffered by the wine's strong material, with powerful minerality contributing to the impression of structure. In the past few vintages, Millet has taken the estate's Bonnes-Mares to another level.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard has a vibrant bouquet with blackberry, cranberry and light rose petals scents, almost pastille-like in purity. The palate is medium-bodied with lush, pliant tannins matched by nigh-perfectly judged acidity. A pinch of cracked black pepper on the finish et voilà...a quite delicious Morey-Saint-Denis to drink over the next 10 to 12 years.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes, which contains a little whole bunch, has a tightly-wound bouquet with dark berry fruit, incense and touches of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, peppery entry. Quite structured for a Vosne-Romanée, the finish is reminiscent of a Morey-Saint-Denis.

The 2020 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which contains around 70% whole bunch, has a vivacious bouquet with vibrant red fruit, briary, plenty of sous-bois with a touch of wild heather. There is palpable energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a transparent finish. Ethereal.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru contains around two-thirds whole bunches. The Ruchottes-Chambertin immediately puts the Charmes-Chambertin in its place with more fruit intensity; the limestone terroir percolates through with aplomb. The palate displays exquisite balance and transparency, linear at first and then fanning out towards the finish whilst upholding its mineral line. Hardcore...in a good way.

Vinous (96-98)

Excellent.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (95)

Bright ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, minerals, violet and blood orange. Silky-sweet, dense and thick, with sexy oak tones and compelling sugar/acid snap. Here the tannins are thoroughly buffered by the wine's strong material, with powerful minerality contributing to the impression of structure. In the past few vintages, Millet has taken the estate's Bonnes-Mares to another level.

Wine Advocate (94)

Boasting a nose of great ripeness and freshness, the 2003 Bonnes Mares offers aromas of waxy black fruits and spices. Medium to full-bodied, it resembles liquid silk in both its attack and mid-palate. Luxurious and sensual, this highly expressive wine coats the palate with black cherries and dark raspberries whose effects linger in its tannin-packed, slightly dry finish. Projected maturity: 2009-2020.

Dark crimson. Brilliant energy and drive. Sharp and linear – I'm sure winemaker François Millet has a sonnet to describe the character of this wine – and bursting with fruit. Just starting to drink well. Extremely rich and sweet with some black cherry aspects to it. Very winning. Enjoyed at a dinner in the Adelaide Hills. Perhaps its journey across the equator had brought it on?
