Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Bernard Moreau Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2013 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

(purchased fruit from vines on the Puligny side of the cru near the Chassagne border): Wet stone and menthol dominate the nose. Chewy and vinous but tighter at present and less harmonious than the Grandes Ruchottes. In a powerful style but not thick or heavy. The echoing finish is salty and dry. This will need time in bottle.

  • Bernard Moreau Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Alluring nose combines lemon, lime, crushed rock and a sexy leesy element. Dense and thick but with terrific mineral spine and energy to its flavors of citrus fruits and white flowers. Great unmistakable Burgundy funk here. Moreau told me that this wine is fairly low in acidity but its saline minerality nonetheless gives it a penetrating quality. Mounts slowly and stains the palate on the very long aftertaste. Superb wild, musky wine with unexpected precision. Deceptively tasteable early on, as Chevalier-Montrachet can be, but lay this one down.

The 2021 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there is appreciable open red cherry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, very well balanced, the new oak (25%) is neatly integrated. This builds in the mouth and delivers a welcome peppery note on the finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!

The analysis looks perfectly balanced at 13.35% alcohol and pH 3.15. This has been racked but not sulphured since the harvest. Primrose colour, the nose shows a little heaviness and needs freshening up soon with a sulphur adjustment. The nose suggests yellow fruit and a certain thickness of texture. Ripe to baked apple notes. The palate however shows wonderful potential with excellent grip due in part to a little youthful bitterness. The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose, although it is nothing to get too worried about. I think it has exceptional mineralité covered up by its youth. The medium-bodied palate is taut, fresh and quite saline, with a fine bead of acidity and some vanilla-y oak toward the very saline finish, though that will be eaten with bottle age. There is outstanding precision on the aftertaste, and that seems to be accentuated with aeration. I gave this a tepid reaction from barrel, but here in bottle, it received my highest score out of over two hundred 2017s. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Picked early but still pretty ripe, this has tobacco pouch and clove aromas from 20% whole bunches, layers of mulberry and raspberry fruit, aromatic 20% new wood and a backdrop of sinewy, granular tannins.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Naughty heavy bottle. Medium-deep colour. Rich, multi-layered nose of slate, clove, red fruit and spice that is beautifully integrated. That integration and finesse continues through the palate, with beautiful, elegant tannins. This is a triumph of how to handle intensity and structure without being stolid. Bravo!

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

This is all on the red soil part of Bonnes Mares, vinified with 100% whole bunches. Pretty lighter brighter colour, some reduction, then whole bunch strawberries. Generous fruit on the palate, quite complex, very stylish and with fine promise. A fine long aftertaste.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

    James Suckling (94-95)

The nose has a restrained, mineral edge. Gun-smoke and flinty notes, wild herbs and sous bois with super fine cherries, as well as crushed red flowers. All very delicate this early in its journey. The palate has a sleek and appealingly powerful feel that expands fully on fine, long and fresh tannins. The regal finish is already impressive. Try from 2023.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

    James Suckling (100)

Its really hard to imagine how a white Brugundy could be more flinty and minerally than this super-concentrated and super-vibrant Chevalier Montrachet. Lovely aromas of lemon blossom, jasmine, tangerine and nectarine, alongside all the stony stuff. Then comes the staggeringly long finish that is totally pure and precise. From Bouchard’s 2.3-hectare holding, which comprises almost a third of the entire Grand Cru site. Drink or hold.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has quite a perfumed bouquet with brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals. This has delicacy and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh entry, blood orange and marmalade infusing the dark berry fruit. Nicely proportioned with just a little oak to be soaked up on the chewy finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is showing especially well, bursting with scents of peonies, blood orange, wild plums, cassis and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and expressive, it's lively and sapid, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and powdery tannins. This derives from domaine holdings in En Orveaux, where Weber identifies appreciable diurnal shift as a source of freshness.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (19)

Naughty heavy bottle. Manages to dance on the head of a pin: an extra dimension of weight and density without being heavy, hot or flat. White peach, hazelnut, citrus and stones. Great length.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (97)

Bouchard’s holding here is superb: 0.90ha on the edge of the Puligny side at midslope between Ramonet and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 2019, Bouchard emphasised the richness by picking this parcel last. Ripe apples, white flowers and even a touch of honey make their appearance on the nose, while the texture on the palate is unctuous and deep without being heavy. There is still enough freshness to keep this lively through the intensely long finish.
