Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Heresztyn Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru comes from around 55-60 years old vines, matures in 30% new oak and 70% whole bunches. This has a ripe and refined bouquet with hints of blue fruit developing in the glass, very floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. This feels linear and precise, gradually building towards a very minerally and tensile finish. Great persistency here, a superb Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets.

  • Heresztyn-Mazzini Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 2014 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes was picked a little earlier just to keep the acidity from the berries that were affected by millerandage. It has a well defined bouquet with light gravel scents infusing the blackberry and briary fruit. This is very correct but also very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly earthy red berry fruit. There is still some oak to be subsumed, but I think it was a right decision to pick early as the acidity maintains sufficient tension on the slightly foursquare finish.

(Lafon bought seven hectares of east-facing vines on clay-rich soil in Viré in 2009, including some that date back to the 1930s; the youngest vines here are at least 30 years of age): Bright lemon-yellow. Intriguing aromas of pear, white peach, flowers, minerals, menthol and white pepper. Pliant and thick but very juicy and fresh; lovely lemony cut (4.4 acidity) gives a light touch to the fruit. Shows strong spine and structure without especially high acidity. Lovely fine-grained wine with class. This vineyard needed a lot of work, noted Gon. Another tour de force from Lamy is the 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haut Densité, a magical wine that unwinds in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, citrus oil, warm bread and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, this searingly intense and assertively mineral Saint-Aubin brought tears to my eyes. • Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2020 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has quite an open and expressive bouquet with blackberry, crushed rock and undergrowth, almost peaty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite gritty in texture and tight with a saline finish. This will require 3-4 years. It is a bit abrasive at the moment and needs to be tempered by time.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Boudriotte 1er Cru does not quite deliver the delineation of the Clos St.-Jean with scents of Granny Smith apples and crushed rock. The palate is concentrated and sappy, almost Puligny-like in terms of austerity. A Chassagne that I believe will reward bottle age.

  • Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 2018 (3x150cl)

    Jancis Robinson (17)

Deep cherry red. Ripe and dark-red fruits and some savoury spice. Lovely dark mineral character yet still has deep fruit. Some oak sweetness and spice on the palate and this needs to die back. But the fruit is beautifully pure and the tannins fine and dry. Dry but surprisingly silky already.

  • Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 2020 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru, which comes from deeper soils than the Beaune Grèves, has a mixture of red and black fruit and is a touch more expressive with a discrete marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, very layered with a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. This is one of the finest Clos des Mouches that I have tasted.
