Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques 2009 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques sweeps across the palate with beautifully delineated black fruits. This shows tremendous aromatic intensity and fabulous length. With time in the glass, the wine turns more delicate, showing another side of its personality. A 65 note of licorice adds complexity on the multi-dimensional finish. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters for the fruit from the top of the vineyard, but fully destemmed the fruit from the bottom of the hill, resulting in about 70% whole clusters for the final blend. The Clos St. Jacques saw 100% new oak.

  • Trapet Pere & Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2001 (3x150cl)

Medium red. At once mature and vibrant on the nose, offering rich scents of plum, tobacco, spices, mocha and underbrush. A juicy, spicy wine with modest flesh and texture but intriguing vinosity. Aeration brought fresher red fruits and even more energy and thrust. A savory, classically dry, middle-of-the-road style, displaying a captivating juicy coolness and better integration of acidity and tannins than the '04. A beauty in the context of its vintage. Trapet told me that this wine's malolactic fermentation did not finish until the summer of 2002. (13.3% alcohol; 3.55 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity; 39.5 h/h)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea comes from vines that have now been rewired higher according to Jean-Louis Trapet. It has a more mineral-driven, reserved bouquet compared to the Gevrey-Village, fragrant and beautifully defined, the 40% whole bunch lending freshness. The palate is fresh and vibrant with gentle grip, good weight, taut and fresh with a saline, Morey-like finish. Classy, for Burgundy-lovers who like their Pinot a bit cerebral.

This has a tightly wound, rather laconic bouquet that, despite coaxing, remains stubbornly mute. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh on the entry yet not quite achieving the same tension and nuance as the Puligny Champ Gain tasted alongside.

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose that disguises the terroir; it’s difficult to peer beyond the sulfur here. The palate is dense and weighty and slightly honeyed in texture (possibly with just a bit of botrytis?). It feels harmonious toward the finish but does need to address the sulfur issue. The 2016 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru was quite reduced on the nose. The palate is nicely balanced with good concentration, quite nutty and Meursault-like in style and sporting appreciable salinité toward the finish that fans out. Good potential, but give this a couple of years in bottle. I will remain cautious with my score for now.

  • Vougeraie Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2014 (3x150cl)

Very good deep, healthy red. The most floral of these 2014s, conveying lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of black fruits, spices and honeysuckle. Communicates wonderful ripeness and detail without any impression of heaviness or weight. Really superb energy here, no doubt partly due to the vinification with 80% whole clusters. Most impressive today on the very long, fine-grained finish, where the savory red fruit and blackberry flavors build slowly and linger long. This should be long-lived.

More undergrowth scents emerge with time. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry, very plush but controlled, and despite the opulence, terroir floods through this Bonnes-Mares, which fans out wonderfully on the finish. Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 80% whole cluster fruit this year, a high percentage due to the age of the vines planted in 1902. There is fine delineation here, precise black cherry and cranberry scents with a touch of cold granite. It is a nose that demands respect, deservedly so. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple black and red fruit, very pure and smooth with a graceful, marmalade-tinged finish that lingers. This should grow up to be a very seductive, comely Charmes-Chambertin with a long future ahead.

  • Vougeraie Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2013 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (91+)

Good medium red. Musky, slightly rustic nose shows more red than black fruits, with complicating notes of underbrush, herbs and pepper. Very rich, tactile, dry and backward, showing more minerality and medicinal reserve than primary berry or cherry fruit in the early going. Tough going today in spite of its depth of texture and richness. Not at all a sweet style. Vincent told me he prefers the easier sweetness of the 2014, noting that, in general, he regards the 2010 vintage as the best compromise between sweetness and energy since he took over winemaking here in 2006.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru from Vougeraie clearly has some stem addition on the nose but it works well: the fruit seems ripe and it does not obscure the terroir. • Vougeraie Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a generous bouquet, the discreet stem addition lending an attractive leafiness that complements the brambly red fruit. More undergrowth scents emerge with time. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry, very plush but controlled, and despite the opulence, terroir floods through this Bonnes-Mares, which fans out wonderfully on the finish. This is an impressive showing and one of the best from the domaine this vintage. A long-term prospect. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

  • Vougeraie Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Mazoyeres 2014 (3x150cl)

  • Vougeraie Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (3x150cl)

Really lively and pure and fresh but with undertow. Most impressive. Life and density. Maybe the best Vougeot 2015 I have tasted so far.

  • Vougeraie Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is promising, revealing lovely aromas of red cherries and raspberries mingled with rose petals and peonies, with little hint of the savory nuances to come. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, structurally refined but introverted, exhibiting fine balance and a precise finish. While it needs some time to round out, it clearly has fine potential.

  • Vougeraie Corton Grand Cru Le Clos du Roi 2014 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (91)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru from Vougeraie clearly has some stem addition on the nose but it works well: the fruit seems ripe and it does not obscure the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, sour cherry and strawberry with a fine line of acidity threaded through from start to finish, lending focus and harmony. Still a baby, give this 2-3 more years before broaching. Tasted September 2017.

  • Vougeraie Corton Grand Cru Le Clos du Roi 2016 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has a rather facile, pastille-scented bouquet that misses the complexity of its peers. The palate is balanced and clean, but lacks complexity and minerality. Pleasurable but does not engage the intellect. There seems to be some whole bunch fruit here, but it does not quite gel together as well as other examples. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

  • Vougeraie Corton Grand Cru Le Clos du Roi 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru comes from just under half a hectare of vines and is matured with 35% whole bunch. It has a well-defined bouquet that is earthier than Vougeraie’s other crus, conveying a little more energy than the Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, the stems imparting a touch of pepperiness, and the finish is quite tensile, displaying good persistence. This is an elegant Clos du Roi that should age well in bottle.

  • Vougeraie Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from two parcels, the vines planted around the 1950s. The bouquet is well defined with white peach, clementine and light crushed stone aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced, with a silver thread of acidity, and quite mineral-driven toward the second half. A dash of lemongrass lends spiciness that lingers on the aftertaste. Delicious!

  • Vougeraie Pommard Les Petits Noizons 2017 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (89)

The 2017 Pommard Les Petits Noizons is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of wild berries, smoked meats, rich soil tones, cinnamon and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, delicate and fine-boned, its perfumed core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and ripe acids. This is an elegant, gently reductive Pommard that should offer a broad drinking window.

  • Vougeraie Puligny-Montrachet 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from two lieux-dits. Like the Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc, it has discreet flor-like aromas on the nose that I find distracting, and I hope they dissipate prior to bottling. The palate is balanced and rather tropical in style, displaying a fine bead of acidity and strong, honeyed passion fruit and mango notes toward the finish. Enjoyable, but not exactly the most Burgundy of whites you will taste this vintage.

  • Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot Monopole 2016 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot felt more austere on the nose compared to the Puligny Champ Gain. The palate is nicely balanced but maybe missing the complexity of that aforementioned premier cru. I appreciate the dab of spice on the finish, but I would like more personality to come through in bottle.

  • William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 2013 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2013 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses has an austere, wet granite, nettle and saline nose that is nicely poised. The palate is fresh and crisp with a keen line of acidity, a potent marine influence here with bundles of crisp Granny Smith apples mixed with lemongrass and lime toward the tensile finish. This is one of the best wines from William Fevre in 2013.

  • William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 2018 (3x150cl)

    Decanter (97)

This comes from two parcels, facing east and south-west, respectively, making a very tidy 2.5ha in total. Showing the delicate touch of one of the very best winemakers in Chablis, this is a saline, focused, wonderfully structured Preuses that has plenty of grip and acidity, sappy, bone-dry flavors and remarkable length.

  • William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2013 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (92-95)

(production here was just 22 hectoliters per hectare, according to Didier Seguier): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Lemon, lime, white pepper, menthol, botanical herbs and powdered stone on the enticing nose and palate. Densely packed, chewy and tactile; a bit smaller-scaled than the Vaudesir but strong integrated acidity perfectly balances the wine's sweetness and gives the palate outstanding cut. The very long, palate-staining finish conveys a strong impression of dusty extract. Great potential here.
