Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Amiot Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Plantes 1er Cru was a little muted compared to the other crus on the day of my visit. The palate is more expressive, with a confit-like entry and a fine bead of acidity, and quite energetic and vibrant toward the nicely focused finish. Probably one of the earlier-drinking wines from the domaine. Charming, though.

  • Amiot Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musignes Les Plantes 1er Cru has a cohesive, slightly minty bouquet, the 35% whole bunch quite discreet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well-judged acidity, and quite elegant in style – more so than previous vintages – with a judicious pinch of white pepper and bay leaf toward the finish. This has plenty of character and should age well over the next 12 to 15 years.

  • Amiot Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village includes around 25% whole bunch this year and about 20% new oak. This has a little more cohesion than the Morey Village at the moment on the nose of dark berry fruit, almost pastille-like. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, fine tannins and commendable delineation on the finish. Quite strict, in the style of a Morey-Village, but there is commendable vigor.

  • Amiot Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-91)

Picked on 31st August and 1st September, across their seven plots, with 24% whole bunches. An even dark purple. Dark raspberry and some peony. Like the Morey there are some dry tannins behind which have not yet integrated into the undoubtedly concentrated, thick textured, dark fruit.

  • Amiot Servelle Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from Mazoyères, has a fragrant, peppermint-tinged bouquet that is more discreet than others I have tasted. You have to coax the aromas from their shell, touches of violet emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and finely tuned acidity. Quite dense and perhaps requiring a little more delineation and complexity to manifest on the conservative finish. It just needs to turn on the Charmes.

  • Amiot Servelle Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is in the Mazoyères area and might be renamed in the not-too-distant future. This has a tightly wound bouquet, the 50% whole bunch nicely integrated. Red berry fruit, cola and light spicy notes unfold in the glass but never fully let go. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, layers of candied red fruit and a modicum of spice, fanning out nicely toward the finish. Very fine.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Richer purple black and a sweet ripe fruit here, but it smells in good balance. Much lusher fruit, certainly at least optimum ripeness, but it works very well. Generous fruit behind and good length. The fruit covers the tannins very nicely. Tasted: December 2021

A fuller purple, showing an exuberant cherry raspberry fruit, with energy behind, and a little thread of acidity. From barrel, this stands head and shoulders above its neighbours. A touch of strawberry too in the long, satisfying finish. Drink from 2026-2032.

  • Anne & Herve Sigaut Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers is superb, its strikingly saturated ruby hue presaging a deep bouquet of raspberry, cherries and wild berries, mingling with subtle suggestions of peony, orange rind and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, gourmand and beautifully poised, with a lavish attack underpinned by bright acids, its finish cool and precise. From vines planted in 1947, this comes highly recommended.
