  • Malartic Lagraviere 2013 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-93)

Under the impressive Belgian ownership, this property has been on a hot streak for a number of years. The 2013’s final blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot came from only 35% of the harvest, which took place between September 28 and October 18. The wine exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color as well as notes of graphite, licorice, blueberries, black raspberries and a hint of barbecue smoke, and a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated mouthfeel and finish. There is no evidence of rot, astringent tannin or excessive acidity. It has turned out to be one of the more successful wines in this vintage. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years.

  • Montrose 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91-94)

Graphite, camphor, incense, tobacco, smoke and game burst from the glass in the 2013 Montrose. A dark, brooding wine, the 2013 boasts notable depth and tannin considering its mid-weight structure. The 2013 will require at least a few years to come together. Graphite, scorched earth, sage and rosemary are some of the notes that inform the intense finish. This has real density for the year. Based on two tastings so far, the 2013 Montrose is making a very strong case for itself as one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, with quite a bit more Cabernet than the more typical 55%. Tasted twice.

The 2013 Petit-Village fleshes out nicely in the glass. There is good depth and intensity to the fruit, even if some slightly angular contours remain. Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet aromatic spices add nuance on the finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2013 develops over the coming year. Right now there is a battle between the juiciness of the fruit and the slightly drying tannins. The blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 shows lovely up-front fruit, with perhaps a bit less mid-palate to fill out the frame, which in turn exposes the slightly under ripe tannins. • Pichon Lalande 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2013 Pichon-Lalande, according to Nicolas Glumineau, was picked 10 days earlier than he wanted because of the risk of rot, therefore 10 hectares of Merlot was picked in a single day, a Sunday to boot. "It saved us," Glumineau tells me. It has a light, fragrant, slightly briny bouquet. Just a little herbaceousness coming through, simple but pleasurable. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and it has more depth than the nose implies. Hints of dark chocolate and espresso towards the finish with a touch of spiciness, though undeniably monotone compared to recent vintages under Nicolas Glumineau. This is a perfectly respectable Pauillac if you can abide the bitterness on the aftertaste that ebbs away in the glass. Tasted at the "Difficult Vintage" vertical at the château.

  • Pontet Canet 2013 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this biodynamically farmed vineyard (a rarity, but increasing in the Bordeaux viticulture), had tiny yields of 15 hectoliters per hectare. This doesn’t translate into super concentration, but this is certainly an outstanding effort in an extremely difficult vintage. The wine has a dense purple color, and classic creme de cassis, licorice and mocha and espresso roast notes that Pontet-Canet has displayed recently. The wine is medium-bodied, possesses excellent purity, equilibrium and sweet, but noticeable tannin. This is by no means at the level of the great vintages that have been so common of late from this incredible property on the Plateau of Pauillac across from Mouton Rothschild, but it’s certainly one of the vintage’s more noteworthy efforts. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15 or so years.

The 2013 Rauzan-Ségla is one of the brawnier wines I tasted in Margaux. Black cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco and menthol wrap around the palate. Savory and floral notes appear later, adding aromatic nuance. The 2013 impresses for the purity of its fruit and its overall balance. Very fine and structured with ultra-fine tannins. Medium bodied with beautiful density and texture. It has length and grip for the vintage. Better in 2020.

  • Pichon Comtesse Reserve 2013 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (86-88)

The 2013 Reserve de La Comtesse is soft, fruity and well-suited to near-term drinking. Dark raspberries, wild flowers and mint are all nicely delineated in the glass. The 2013 shows lovely up-front fruit, with perhaps a bit less mid-palate to fill out the frame, which in turn exposes the slightly under ripe tannins. Dried flowers, crushed raspberries and a gentle hint of spice linger on the close. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot. Tasted twice.

  • Rauzan-Segla 2013 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89-92)

The 2013 Rauzan-Ségla is one of the brawnier wines I tasted in Margaux. Black cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco and menthol wrap around the palate. Savory and floral notes appear later, adding aromatic nuance. The 2013 impresses for the purity of its fruit and its overall balance. All the signatures are in place, but in miniature, which suggests the 2013 is likely to be a medium term drinker. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Taste twice.

  • Rayne Vigneau 2013 (12x37.5cl)

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (91-94)

Bright, pale yellow. Lively lemon, tangerine, mango and papaya aromas are complicated by menthol and smoky botrytis. Sweet, silky and suave, delivering enticing, very pure flavors of peach nectar, guava and honey. This offers plenty of volume and richness without excess weight and finishes with sneaky length.

  • Roc de Cambes 2013 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88-91)

Sweet red berries, hard candy, crushed flowers, spices and mint are some of the many notes that meld together in the glass as the 2013 Roc de Cambes opens up in the glass. The 2013 is super-ripe, racy and layered, but in the soft, silky style of the year. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak barrels. The style is all about texture and silkiness. The 2013 finishes with sweet floral and spice notes, as well as terrific freshness.

  • Suduiraut 2013 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94-96)

The 2013 Suduiraut is magnificent. A bold, direct Sauternes, the 2013 hits the palate with an exotic mélange of apricot jam, lychee, spices, mint and honey. One of the bigger, deeper wines of the vintage, the Suduiraut is firing on all cylinders today. This is a great showing.
