Vibrant and exciting, with intense aromas of light toasty oak, pineapple skin, lemon, gooseberry, acacia honey and peach tart. Flowers even. Full-bodied, layered and refined, with tropical fruit, honey, vanilla, cream and light toasty oak. The length is amazing. White wine doesn't get better than this. Needs a little time, but hard to leave it alone. Best after 2014. 665 cases made. -JS

This has terrific depth and cut, offering a core of dried pineapple, Jonagold apple and white peach fruit, along with quinine and gooseberry notes, all lined with a bracing jicama edge. The finish is backed by salted butter, brioche and shortbread details. Shows power and purity, with terrific length. Approachable now, but give this time. Best from 2017 through 2030. -JM

Wine Advocate (96+)

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Haut-Brion Blanc has an entrancing bouquet of honeysuckle, fresh pear and greengage that is beautifully defined and seamlessly enmeshed with the oak. The palate is well balanced with just a patina of new oak, smooth and harmonious, fine mineralité here with a spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. This is very well crafted and it will just get better and better. Yes, my drinking window does advise ten years in bottle, since in my experience only this and the late Laville Haut-Brion age so magnificently. Therefore, that score may well rise in the future if I am ever afforded a chance to re-taste this superb white Bordeaux. Tasted January 2016.

The 2013 Haut Brion Blanc, which is a blend of 66% Sauvignon Blanc and 34% Semillon, has a more expressive bouquet than the 2013 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, with mineral-rich citrus fruit, grapefruit and honeysuckle - all very vivacious. The palate is very well balanced, intense and exuberant with lanolin-tinged citrus fruit, dried pineapple, almond, sweet fig and a dash of lemongrass on the long finish. This is just a superb Haut Brion Blanc that should give two or three decades of pleasure.

The 2014 Haut Brion Blanc has a very pure bouquet with scents of peach skin, Cornice pear and those resinous/candle wax aromas that I remarked upon during en primeur. This has more sophistication than the La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, a little more tension. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry, perfect acidity, wonderful tension and energy. Notes of orange pith, a squeeze of lime, flint and smoke are conveyed on the finish that demonstrates outstanding persistence. This is a great Haut Brion Blanc, but it will require a decade in the bottle before it will show what it can really do.

With a depth of flavor, you find multiple layers of juicy, fresh, pomelo, green apple, honeysuckle, crushed rocks and ripe pears. It is hard to say if it is the purity, length, complexity or richness which knocks me out the most. The white of the vintage is the 2016 Haut Brion Blanc, a Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes just under 30% Sémillon. Amazingly deep and rich, yet vibrant at the same time, it offers an exotic, liquid rock-like minerality as well as notes of citrus zest, crushed limes, and white flowers. It’s unquestionably one of the most concentrated, powerful wines out there, yet it still just glides across the palate with flawless integration of its fruit and acidity. It needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years if you’re so inclined.

A blend of 56.2% Sauvignon Blanc and 43.8% Semillon, the 2017 Haut-Brion Blanc prances out with showy scents of pink grapefruit, fresh pineapple, and passionfruit with suggestions of crushed stones, coriander seed, and candlewax plus a waft of marzipan. The medium-bodied palate is expressive with impressive restraint, delivering gregarious fruit at this early stage, but holding back so many fine mineral and savory layers, finishing with epic tension and persistence. Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 L’Extravagant de Doisy Daëne has 3.9grams of acidity, 192 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. The 2005 has a powerful bouquet with honey, mandarin, a touch of petrol and yellow flowers on the nose, later developing that seductive marzipan scent that draws you in like a tractor beam. The palate is unctuous in the mouth that is probably going to be sugar-coated for the next year or two, but there are some gorgeous peach and citrus notes that flourish on the finish. It is more a force of nature than a wine!

One of the undisputed stars of the vintage, the 2014 Doisy-Daëne L'Extravagant is a real stunner. Plush and beautifully textured, with lovely brightness and impeccable overall balance, the 2014 simply has it all. Lemon confit, baked apple tart, brioche and coconut are all pushed forward in this sensual, exquisite Sauternes. The 2014 is deep, but also quite silky and never a wine of excess. All the elements are simply in the right place.

Vinous - Neal Martin (98)

The 2007 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a ripe and generous bouquet with orange pith, apricot, crème brûlée and quince, unfurling beautifully in the glass. The palate is supremely well balanced with fine definition, wonderful acidity and a composed, almost Tokaji-like finish that lingers with enticing marmalade and quince notes. So precise. So delicious.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

One of the undisputed stars of the vintage, the 2014 Doisy-Daëne L'Extravagant is a real stunner. Plush and beautifully textured, with lovely brightness and impeccable overall balance, the 2014 simply has it all. Lemon confit, baked apple tart, brioche and coconut are all pushed forward in this sensual, exquisite Sauternes. The 2014 is deep, but also quite silky and never a wine of excess. All the elements are simply in the right place.
