Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Just enough acidity, with ripe apples at the finish. Drink from 2027-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Drawn from the prestigious Burgundy vineyards, the Frederic Cossard Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2022 is a masterful embodiment of French viticulture. Created by Frederic Cossard, a maverick producer known for his dedication to natural winemaking, this Puligny-Montrachet celebrates the purity of Chardonnay. Harvested by hand from a single vineyard, 'Les Folatieres', the grapes are meticulously sorted and pressed, followed by fermentation in old oak barrels. The result is a harmonious interplay of fruit, mineral tones and graceful oak influence. This wine's defining character lies in its impeccable balance, vibrant acidity, and robust structure. It culminates in a persistent finish; a testament to its potential for aging. The Frederic Cossard Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2022 brilliantly showcases the intricate nuances of well-crafted Burgundian Chardonnay, reflecting the producer's unwavering commitment to the terroir and traditional winemaking practices. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)Middling deep yellow. A little oak on the nose, but otherwise high class predominantly orchard fruit. This is more nuanced than the Folatières, entirely white fruit and a good balance between the clay and the minerals. An excellent and persistent finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)5 Star Wine. Mid yellow in colour. A light biscuity touch alongside a properly floral bouquet, this is remarkably stylish while evidently also suggesting full ripeness. Several waves of flavour with the fruit becoming ever fresher the further back it goes, finishing on a very pure white fruit, scarcely marked by the oak at all. A brilliant village Puligny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is brilliant, mingling aromas of dark berries and plums with notions of blood orange, rose petals, exotic spices and smoke in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, deep and complete, it's seamless and multidimensional, its layered core of fruit almost entirely concealing its ample endowment of sweet, powdery tannin. |
