Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (89-91)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine has the most floral bouquet of the three tasted from Roy, red fruit commingling with subtle mocha scents and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, again, just a tad savory in style, finishing with a dab of spice. This should drink well for several years, possibly more. |

Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice 2022 is an exemplary expression of Burgundy’s esteemed viticultural heritage. Grown in the prestigious La Justice vineyard, situated within the heart of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, these Pinot Noir grapes benefit from pristine granite soils, fostering complexity and depth. Under the expert guidance of Marc Roy, a producer renowned for his unwavering commitment to quality and terroir integrity, the 2022 vintage undergoes a meticulous winemaking process. Hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted to ensure only the finest bunches are selected, followed by gentle destemming and fermentation in a combination of French oak and stainless steel vessels. This dual approach preserves the wine’s vibrant fruit character while integrating subtle oak nuances. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, facilitating a harmonious development of structure and flavour. The resulting La Justice 2022 presents a captivating nose of red cherries, violets, and hints of earthiness, transitioning to a palate marked by silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a persistent, elegant finish. A distinguished choice for connoisseurs, this wine embodies the quintessential elegance and sophistication synonymous with Marc Roy’s illustrious portfolio. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from 80-year-old vines. Plump red fruit leads the charge on the nose, segueing into an off-dry palate that offers white pepper-dashed strawberry and Morello fruit. Just when I'm getting excited, the finish is a tad drier than anticipated. Hopefully, it will be remedied during its remaining barrel maturation. |
